A recent interspecific study found Bergmann's size clines for Holarctic anurans and proposed an explanation based on heat balance to account for the pattern. However, this analysis was limited to cold temperate regions, and exploring the patterns in warmer tropical climates may reveal other factors that also influence anuran body size variation. We address this using a Cerrado anuran database. We examine the relationship between mean body size in a grid of 1° cells and environmental predictors and test the relative support for four hypotheses using an AIC-based model selection approach. Also, we considered three different amphibian phylogenies to partition the phylogenetic and specific components of the interspecific variation in body size using a method analogous to phylogenetic eigen vector regression (PVR). To consider the potential effects of spatial autocorrelation we use eigenvector-based spatial filters. We found the largest species inhabiting high water deficit areas in the northeast and the smallest in the wet southwest. Our results are consistent with the water availability hypothesis which, coupled with previous findings, suggests that the major determinant of interspecific body size variation in anurans switches from energy to water towards the equator. We propose that anuran body size gradients reflect effects of reduced surface to volume ratios in larger species to control both heat and water balance.  相似文献

The determination of optical properties of organic matter using spectroscopic techniques is a powerful tool for the characterization of humic substances (HS) in soils and sediments because of sensitivity, specificity and sample throughput. However, basic spectroscopic techniques have practical limitations because of the similarity in the optical properties of many HS. To improve resolution, the combination of excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) was applied for characterizing fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA) fractions from soils and sediments of two estuarine environments in Spain. Five fluorescent components were identified by EEM-PARAFAC and were found in both FA and HA fractions, consistent with the new paradigm of HS as supramolecular associations as well as the ubiquity of the HS components in the environment. Their contribution was, however, different between the FA and HA fractions. Two different, humic-like, fluorescent components were representative of FA and HA fractions, respectively. The spectral characteristics of these components were similar to previously reported PARAFAC components in dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a wide range of environments, suggesting their applicability in assessing OM quality and environmental dynamics. A microbial humic-like component was much more abundant in FA than in HA fractions. Furthermore, principal component analysis clarified that the two identified protein-like components, were enriched in sediment HA compared to soil HA, suggesting a larger contribution of refractory algaenan in sediment HA. The results of the present study demonstrate that EEM-PARAFAC is a useful technique for the biogeochemical characterization of soil and sedimentary HS.  相似文献

Plasmid pUB110 was previously used as a vector to clone fragments of deoxyribonucleic acid that complement the trpC2 mutation in Bacillus subtilis from endonuclease EcoRI digested B. licheniformis, B. pumilus, and B. subtilis cellular deoxyribonucleic acid. Each of several such trp plasmids was subsequently shown to contain a segment of the trp gene cluster on the basis of genetic complementing activity. In the present study, analysis of the Trp enzyme levels in B. subtilis harboring the constructed trp plasmids confirms the genetic constitution of the plasmids. Thus, plasmids that complement mutations in specific trp genes specify the corresponding enzyme activities. The levels of the plasmid-specified Trp enzymes in B. subtilis were generally above the repressed level of the chromosomally specified Trp enzymes and equal to or below the derepressed levels of the chromosomally specified Trp enzymes. Certain cloned trp segments contain a single HindIII-sensitive site. Insertion of HindIII-generated deoxyribonucleic acid fragments into these trp plasmids resulted in inactivation of trpC complementing activity, loss of the trpC-specified enzyme activity, and a 10-fold reduction in the specific activity of the plasmid-specified trpF product. The HindIII insertions had no detectable effect on the level of the trpD product, nor did the insertions detectably alter plasmid-specified complementing activity other than to abolish trpC complementation. Removal of the HindIII insertions was accompanied by recovery of trpC complementing activity and restoration of the trpC-and trpF-determined enzymes to the levels specified by the parent plasmids.  相似文献

Summary Membrane structure and photosynthetic activity was investigated in normal and mutant plastids ofTradescantia albiflora cv.aureo-vittata. In the stacked membrane regions (the macrograna) of mutant plastids, the B fracture faces lack both 170 Å particles and photosystem II (PS II) activity. The C face has the normal 110 Å particles, and photosystem I (PS I) activity is also similar to that in normal chloroplasts. In dilated macrograna the particle size on the C face significantly decreases, and as progressive plastid destruction occurs so PS I activity also disappears. It has been concluded that the integrity of B face particles is related to PS II activity, rather than for membrane stacking. A similar correlation seems to be valid for C face particles and PS I activity.  相似文献

The antennal lobe of the moth contains several classes of glial cells that are likely to play functional roles in both the developing and mature lobe. In this study, confocal and electron microscopy were used to examine in detail the morphology of two classes of glial cells, those associated with olfactory receptor axons as they course to their targets in the lobe and those that form borders around the synaptic neuropil of the olfactory glomeruli. The former, the nerve-layer glia, have long processes with multiple expansions that enwrap axon fascicles; the latter, the neuropil glia, constitute two subgroups: complex glia with large cell bodies and branching, vellate arbors; and simple glia, with multiple, mostly unbranched processes with many lamellate expansions along their lengths. The processes of complex glia appear to be closely associated with axon fascicles as they enter the glomeruli, while those of the simple glia surround the glomeruli as part of a multi-lamellar glial envelope, their processes rarely invading the synaptic neuropil of the body of the glomerulus. The full morphological development of antennal-lobe glial cells requires more than two-thirds of metamorphic development. During this period, cells that began as cuboidal or spindle-shaped cells that were extensively dye-coupled to one another gradually assume their adult form and, at least under nonstimulated conditions, greatly reduce their coupling. These changes are only weakly dependent on the presence of olfactory receptor axons. Glial processes are somewhat shorter and less branched in the absence of these axons, but basic structure and degree of dye-coupling are unchanged.  相似文献

The mite Ornithonyssus bursa (Berlese) (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae) is considered a poultry pest causing important infestations in chickens and it is considered a potential vector of arbovirus. Despite being considered a common parasite in wild birds, there is scarce published information about its potential hosts and effects on them. Here we present new bird hosts for O. bursa, assess the presence of Alphavirus, Flavivirus and Bunyavirus in mites from three host species, and discuss its potential impact on wild bird populations. We found O. bursa infecting five raptor and six passerine wild bird species. For nine of these species, this is the first record of infection by O. bursa. Although all analysed mites were negative for the examined arboviruses, the small sample size of mites does not allow further conclusions at the present moment. Because of the general nature of this ectoparasite, its presence in migratory long dispersal and endangered bird species, and the seropositivity for arboviruses in some of the species studied here, we consider it critical to assess the role of O. bursa and other ectoparasites as vectors and reservoirs of pathogens and as potential deleterious agents in wild bird populations.  相似文献

  1. A significant link between forest loss and fragmentation and outbreaks of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in humans has been documented. Deforestation may alter the natural circulation of viruses and change the composition, abundance, behaviour and possibly viral exposure of reservoir species. This in turn might increase contact between infected animals and humans.
  2. Fruit bats of the family Pteropodidae have been suspected as reservoirs of the Ebola virus. At present, the only evidence associating fruit bats with EVD is the presence of seropositive individuals in eight species and polymerase chain reaction-positive individuals in three of these.
  3. Our study investigates whether human activities can increase African fruit bat geographical ranges and whether this influence overlaps geographically with EVD outbreaks that, in turn, are favoured by deforestation.
  4. We use species observation records for the 20 fruit bat species found in favourable areas for the Ebola virus to determine factors affecting the bats' range inside the predicted Ebola virus area. We do this by employing a hypothetico-deductive approach based on favourability modelling.
  5. We show that the range of some fruit bat species is linked to human activities within the favourable areas for the Ebola virus. More specifically, the areas where human activities favour the presence of five fruit bat species overlap with the areas where EVD outbreaks in humans were themselves favoured by deforestation. These five species are as follows: Eidolon helvum, Epomops franqueti, Megaloglossus woermanni, Micropteropus pusillus and Rousettus aegyptiacus. Of these five, all but Megaloglossus woermanni have recorded seropositive individuals. For the remaining 15 bat species, we found no biogeographical support for the hypothesis that positive human influence on fruit bats could be associated with EVD outbreaks in deforested areas within the tropical forest biome in West and Central Africa.
  6. Our work is a useful first step allowing further investigation of the networks and pathways that may lead to an EVD outbreak. The modelling framework we employ here can be used for other emerging infectious diseases.

Incubation of rat hepatocytes with 10 mM mevalonate produces a decrease in HMG-CoA reductase activity and in the rate of synthesis of both monomeric and dimeric HMG-CoA reductase, and an increase in the rate of degradation of the monomeric form without significant change in that of the dimeric form. Since mevalonate promotes a short-term phosphorylation of the monomeric form without affecting the dimeric form, it is suggested that the mechanism of degradation of reductase is controlled by its phosphorylation state.  相似文献

A nonparametric test to detect a pulse in monthly data is presented. This test is a maximum rank-sum test. The test statistic can be computed from frequencies or rates. The exact null distribution of the test statistic is tabulated for pulses that last 3, 4, 5, or 6 months. Estimates from a simulation study of the test's type I error rate and power are presented. The statistical modeling of the data is discussed. Several examples are given to illustrate the application of the test and the modeling procedures. Practical matters such as the treatment of tied observations, the effect of unequal lengths in the months, sample-size calculation, and post-test power analysis are discussed and illustrated with examples.  相似文献
