Chromium (Cr) is considered to be one of the major environmental hazards and poses a threat to both plant and animal health. Selenium (Se), however, has been recognized as an essential micronutrient in plants. To understand the role of Se(VI) in oxidative stress management and regulation of antioxidative defence mechanism against heavy metal stress, the seedlings of Brassica juncea L. were raised in Petri plates containing nutrient media supplemented with only with Se(VI) and Cr(VI), or their combination. It was observed that of Cr(VI) causes an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the seedlings leading to oxidative stress. Histological studies using confocal and visible microscopy confirmed the biochemical results. Supplementation of up to 4 µM of Se(VI) to media containing 300 µM of Cr(VI) reduced the contents of ROS and increased enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants in the seedlings. At a concentration of 6 µM, however, Se(VI) was toxic. The results suggested that at appropriate concentrations, the exogenous application of Se(VI) enabled the B. juncea seedlings to counteract the effects of Cr(VI), thereby increasing the resistance of plants. 相似文献

This study describes the size at first sexual maturity, length–weight relationships (LWR) in relation to size at first sexual maturity, and Fulton’s condition factor (KF) of Eutropiichthys vacha in the Ganges River, northwestern Bangladesh. Sampling was done using traditional fishing gear including cast nets, square lift nets and conical traps during January and April, and July to December 2010. For each individual, total length (TL) was measured to the nearest 0.01 cm, and total weight (BW) was determined to the nearest 0.01 g. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) was calculated by the equation, GSI (%) = (Gonad weight in g/BW) × 100. The size at first sexual maturity of males and females was estimated by the relationship between gonadosomatic index and total length. A total of 583 specimens (289 males; 294 females) ranging from 8.30 to 27.00 cm TL and 3.16 to 159.50 g BW were analyzed. Sizes at first sexual maturity for male and female E. vacha were 13.15 and 14.00 cm TL, respectively. The analysis of covariance (ancova ) revealed significant differences in slope and intercept between early and late phases for males (F = 4.532, P < 0.001) and females (F = 21.984, P < 0.001). The KF was not significantly correlated with TL for males (rs = 0.052; P = 0.378), but was highly correlated for females (rs = ?0.165; P = 0.005). This study establishes a strong base for monitoring changes in length at first sexual maturity attributable to high fishing pressures or other reasons within the Ganges and associated river ecosystems. 相似文献

Background
Studies from high-income countries have shown that women receive less aggressive diagnostics and treatment than men in acute coronary syndromes (ACS), though their short-term mortality does not appear to differ from men. Data on gender differences in ACS presentation, management, and outcomes are sparse in India.Methods and Results
The Detection and Management of Coronary Heart Disease (DEMAT) Registry collected data from 1,565 suspected ACS patients (334 women; 1,231 men) from ten tertiary care centers throughout India between 2007–2008. We evaluated gender differences in presentation, in-hospital and discharge management, and 30-day death and major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE; death, re-hospitalization, and cardiac arrest) rates. Women were less likely to present with STEMI than men (38% vs. 55%, p<0.001). Overall inpatient diagnostics and treatment patterns were similar between men and women after adjustment for potential confounders. Optimal discharge management with aspirin, clopidogrel, beta-blockers, and statin therapy was lower for women than men, (58% vs. 65%, p = 0.03), but these differences were attenuated after adjustment (OR = 0.86 (0.62, 1.19)). Neither the outcome of 30-day mortality (OR = 1.40 (0.62, 3.16)) nor MACE (OR = 1.00 (0.67, 1.48)) differed significantly between men and women after adjustment.Conclusions
ACS in-hospital management, discharge management, and 30-day outcomes did not significantly differ between genders in the DEMAT registry, though consistently higher treatment rates and lower event rates in men compared to women were seen. Helicobacter pylori, a Gram-negative bacterium, is associated with a wide range of gastric diseases such as gastritis, duodenal ulcer, and gastric cancer. The prevalence of H pylori and risk of disease vary in different parts of the world based on the prevailing bacterial lineage. Here, we present a contextual and comparative genomics analysis of 20 clinical isolates of H pylori from patients in Bangladesh. Despite a uniform host ethnicity (Bengali), isolates were classified as being part of the HpAsia2 (50%) or HpEurope (50%) population. Out of twenty isolates, eighteen isolates were cagA positive, with two HpEurope isolates being cagA negative, three EPIYA motif patterns (AB, AB-C, and ABC-C) were observed among the cagA-positive isolates. Three vacA genotypes were observed with the s1m1i1dic1 genotype observed in 75% of isolates; the s1m2i1d1c2 and s2m2i2d2c2 genotypes were found to be 15% and 10% of isolates, respectively. The non-virulent genotypes s2m2i2d2c2 was only observed in HpEurope population isolates. Genotypic analysis of oipA gene, present in all isolates, revealed five different patterns of the CT repeat; all HpAsia2 isolates were in “ON” while 20% of HpEurope isolates were genotypically “OFF.” The three blood group antigen binding adhesins encoded genes (bab genes) examined and we observed that the most common genotype was (babA/babB/-) found in eight isolates, notably six were HpAsia2 isolates. The babA gene was found in all HpAsia2 isolates but present in only half of the HpEurope isolates. In silico antibiotic susceptibility analysis revealed that 40% of the strains were multi-drug resistant. Mutations associated with resistance to metronidazole, fluoroquinolone, and clarithromycin were detected 90%, 45%, and 5%, respectively, in H pylori strain. In conclusion, it is evident that two populations of H pylori with similar antibiotic profiles are predominant in Bangladesh, and it appears that genotypically the HpAisa2 isolates are potentially more virulent than the HpEurope isolates. 相似文献

Micropropagation offers a great potential to produce millions of clonal individuals through tissue culture via induction of morphogenesis. The aim of this work was to obtain an efficient protocol for callus regeneration for Gentiana kurroo Royle. The morphogenic response of different explants (leaves, petioles, roots) varied and responded differently for regeneration according to combinations of growth regulators. The petiole explants were best responding for callus induction and subsequently for indirect and direct regeneration. The callus induction was achieved on MS basal + 1.0 mg/l benzyladenine (BA) and 3.00 mg/l naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). MS medium supplemented with 0.10 mg/l NAA and 1.0 mg/l thidiazuron (TDZ) was recorded as the best medium for indirect regeneration. However, for direct regeneration the maximum number of shoot emergence was observed on MS basal fortified with 0.10 mg/l NAA + 0.75 mg/l TDZ. Half strength MS basal supplemented with indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) 1.00 mg/l gave best response for root induction. Subsequently, the plantlets were transferred and 100 % survival rate was recorded only on autoclaved cocopeat. No morphological variations were recorded in the callus regenerated plantlets. 相似文献

A locally isolated strain of Micromonospora sp. when grown on different natural cellulosic substrates gave the highest activity of carboxymethylcellulase (34 U/ml) and Avicelase (0.9 U/ml) on rice straw. Sugar cane bagasse was also a good substrate for growth and cellulase production. With commercial cellulosic substrates, highest carboxymethylcellulase (90 U/ml) and Avicelase (2.8 U/ml) activities were when the organism grew on xylan. Saccharification of sugar cane bagasse and rice straw by enzyme preparations of the organism grown on the respective substrates released 5.6 and 5.8 mg reducing sugar/ml. Winter varieties of plants can flower only after exposure to prolonged cold. This phenomenon is known as vernalization and has been widely studied in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana as well as in monocots. Through the repression of floral activator genes, vernalization prevents flowering in winter. In Arabidopsis, FLOWERING LOCUS C or FLC is the key repressor during vernalization, while in monocots vernalization is regulated through VRN1, VRN2 and VRN3 (or FLOWERING LOCUS T). Interestingly, VRN genes are not homologous to FLC but FLC homologs are found to have a significant role in vernalization response in cereals. The presence of FLC homologs in monocots opens new dimensions to understand, compare and retrace the evolution of vernalization pathways between monocots and dicots. In this review, we discuss the molecular mechanism of vernalization-induced flowering along with epigenetic regulations in Arabidopsis and temperate cereals. A better understanding of cold-induced flowering will be helpful in crop breeding strategies to modify the vernalization requirement of economically important temperate cereals. 相似文献
