ABSTRACT The phrase persistent vulnerability reflects the enduring relationship of the rural population in Ceará with a highly variable climate. Persistence underscores the historical and unyielding nature of this vulnerability. Yet contrary to once-catastrophic rates of mortality etched in a public consciousness, no one dies from severe droughts and few people flee them as in the past. Government relief and social transfers have become the institutionalized form of adaptation, giving way to the counterintuitive reality that drought stabilizes the food and income supply for poor people. We analyze how maladaptive risk reduction, which is embedded in clientilistic social relations, undermines resilience, and we examine pathways toward a more sustainable adaptive relationship. 相似文献

1L-myo-Inositol-1-phosphatase, an enzyme purified from brain tissues, catalyzes the dephosphorylation of 1L-myo-inositol 1-phosphate. This enzyme has become the subject of intense research interest, since myo-inositol is needed for the resynthesis of phosphatidylinositol. We have developed a sensitive fluorometric assay for detecting the activity of 1L-myo-inositol-1-phosphatase. The assay is based on o-aminobenzoyl beta-glycerophosphate fluorescence, according to the following principles: (I) The fluorescence yield of o-aminobenzoyl beta-glycerophosphate is increased by 2.75-fold in the presence of saturating concentrations of bovine serum albumin. (II) o-Aminobenzoyl beta-glycerophosphate has the same fluorescence yield as o-aminobenzoyl glycerol, but the latter does not bind to bovine serum albumin. (III) Dephosphorylation of the substrate, catalyzed by the monophosphatase, makes less o-aminobenzoyl beta-glycerophosphate available for binding to bovine serum albumin, thereby producing a decrease in the fluorescence intensity. 相似文献

Induction of inflammation by turpentine injection caused 1.5–2-fold increase of both sialy- and galactosyltransferase activity in liver homogenates. The effect was apparent after 12 h turpentine treatment. Serum sialytransferase activity started to increase in the inflamed rats after 18 h, reaching a maximum of 4-fold at 48 h. In contrast, galactosyltransferase activity in serum showed no significant increase. The coordinated and temporal increase of sialytransferase activity in liver and serum suggest involvement of a specific mechanism for the preferential release of this enzyme into serum. 相似文献

The hippocampal formation (HF) of food‐storing birds is larger than non‐storing species, and the size of the HF in food‐storing Black‐Capped Chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) varies seasonally. We examined whether the volume of the septum, a medial forebrain structure that shares reciprocal connections with the HF, demonstrates the same species and seasonal variation as has been shown in the HF. We compared septum volume in three parid species; non‐storing Blue Tits (Parus caeruleus) and Great Tits (Parus major), and food‐storing Black‐Capped Chickadees. We found the relative septum volume to be larger in chickadees than in the non‐storing species. We also compared septum and nucleus of the diagonal band (NDB) volume of Black‐Capped Chickadees at different times of the year. We found that the relative septum volume varies seasonally in food‐storing birds. The volume of the NDB does not vary seasonally. Due to the observed species and seasonal variation, the septum, like the hippocampal formation of food‐storing birds, may be specialized for some aspects of food‐storing and spatial memory. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The in vivo effects of dexamethasone administration on liver and extrahepatic tissue carnitine concentrations were assessed in 48-h-starved rats. In heart and kidney, but not in liver, dexamethasone significantly increased total carnitine concentration. Acute (2.5 h) treatment with 2-tetradecylglycidate (TDG), a specific inhibitor of carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1, not only increased total hepatic carnitine concentrations, but also permitted an effect of dexamethasone (a further increase in hepatic carnitine concentration). The results are discussed in terms of acute (substrate-mediated) and chronic (hormonal) control of carnitine turnover. 相似文献

Glycoalkaloids were used as evidence of the affinities of nine taxa of Solanum Series Megistacrolobum and related potato cultigens from western Bolivia. S. boliviense, S. sanctae-rosae and S. toralapanum contain the commertetraose sugar moiety and appear to represent a relatively wild group within the Series. S. megistacrolobum, S. sogarandinum and S. raphanifolium show anomolous glycoalkaloid profiles that probably reflect hybridization associated with human disturbance. Primitive forms of the S. χ ajanhuiri cultigen are indistinguishable chemicaliy from conspecific weeds that were previously classified as S. megistacrolobum. Variation in total glycoalkaloid content within Series Megistacrolobum likely reflects direct selection by humans for reduced glycoalkaloid levels during the domestication process. 相似文献
