Buoyancy effect on forced convection in the leaf boundary layer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract. Mixed convection (forced convection plus free convection) in the leaf boundary layer was examined by air flow visualization and by evaluation of the boundary layer conductance at different leaf-air temperature differences ( T L- T A) under low wind velocities. The visualized air flow was found to become more unstable and buoyant at higher T L- T A. An ascending longitudinal plume was induced along the upper surface, and the air flow along the lower surface ascended after passing the trailing leaf edge. The air flow modified by buoyancy was considered to result in an increase in boundary layer conductance ( G A) for mixed convection, which became higher with higher T L- T A as compared with the conductance for pure forced convection without buoyancy. This increase in G A appeared larger at larger Grashof number (Gr) and at smaller Reynolds number (Re). The dependences of buoyancy effect on Gr and Re were related to 'edge-effects'.  相似文献

1. The upper thermal limits of the present distributions of two charr species, Dolly Varden, Salvelinus malma , and white-spotted charr, S. leucomaenis , in streams of the Japanese archipelago were examined using groundwater temperature as an index of thermal condition. The lower limits of the altitudinal distributions of Dolly Varden and white-spotted charr were delineated, respectively, by 8 and 16 °C groundwater isotherms.
2. The potential impact of future climatic warming on the geographical distribution, habitat extent and population fragmentation of each species was predicted at both the full archipelago and individual catchment levels.
3. For Dolly Varden, analysis at the full archipelago level indicated a loss of 27.6, 67.2, 79.6 and 89.6% of the current geographical range, respectively, for a 1, 2, 3 and 4 °C increase in mean annual air temperature. The present distribution area of white-spotted charr would likewise reduce by 4.1, 20.5, 33.8 and 45.6%, respectively.
4. Based on the analyses of three individual catchments, one for Dolly Varden and two for white-spotted charr, the lower habitat boundaries for the two charr species could be expected to rise increasingly to higher elevations in each catchment as warming proceeded. As a consequence, there would be large reductions in mean habitat area, with increasing habitat fragmentation followed by localized extinctions of the two species.  相似文献

In the embryos of the sea urchin, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus , reared with 150 μM aminopterin from the time of fertilization, cessation of the development occurred at the blastula stage, at which the dTTP level became quite low. Another addition of thymidine to the embryo culture containing aminopterin resulted in an elevation of dTTP concentration in the embryos and allowed them to develop normally. Decrease in the dTTP level, resulting from the inhibition of thymidylate synthesis by aminopterin, probably causes a failure of egg cleavage and development. 5-Bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BUdR) also released the aminopterin-inhibition of egg cleavage and allowed the treated embryos to develop to early gastrulae. Thereafter, the degeneration of archenteron occurred and these embryos became large permanent blastulae. Other deoxyribonucleosides failed to cancel the inhibition by aminopterin of egg cleavage. In the embryos kept with both BUdR and aminopterin, BUdR incorporation into DNA occurred at a similar rate as in thymidine incorporation in the embryos kept with thymidine and aminopterin, and was inhibited by another addition of thymidine. Without aminopterin treatment, BUdR incorporation hardly occurred and the embryos developed normally. BUdR incorporation into DNA in place of thymidine probably occurs in aminopterin-treated embryos, resulting in abnormal development.  相似文献

Decadal‐ to multi‐decadal variations have been reported in many regional ecosystems in the North Pacific, resulting in an increasing demand to elucidate the link between long‐term climatic forcing and marine ecosystems. We detected phenological and quantitative changes in the copepod community in response to the decadal climatic variation in the western subarctic North Pacific by analyzing the extensive zooplankton collection taken since the 1950s, the Odate Collection. Copepod species were classified into five seasonal groups depending on the timing of the annual peak in abundance. The abundance of the spring community gradually increased for the period 1960–2002. The spring–summer community also showed an increasing trend in May, but a decadal oscillation pattern of quasi‐30‐year cycles in July. Phenological changes coincided with the climate regime shift in the mid‐1970s, indicated by the Pacific decadal oscillation index (PDO). After the regime shift, the timing of the peak abundance was delayed one month, from March–April to April–May, in the spring community, whereas it peaked earlier, from June–July to May–June, in the spring–summer community, resulting in an overlap of the high productivity period for the two communities in May. Wintertime cooling, followed by rapid summertime warming, was considered to be responsible for delayed initiation and early termination of the productive season after the mid‐1970s. Another phenological shift, quite different from the previous decade, was observed in the mid‐1990s, when warm winters followed by cool summers lengthened the productive season. The results suggest that climatic forcing with different decadal cycles may operate independently during winter–spring and spring–summer to create seasonal and interannual variations in hydrographic conditions; thus, combinations of these seasonal processes may determine the annual biological productivity.  相似文献

When two closely related species migrate to divergent spawning sites, divergent use of spawning habitats can directly reduce heterospecific mating. Furthermore, adaptations to divergent spawning habitats can promote speciation as a by‐product of ecological divergence. Here, we investigated habitat isolation and ecological divergence between two anadromous forms of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), the Japan Sea and Pacific Ocean forms. In several coastal regions of eastern Hokkaido, Japan, these forms migrate to the same watershed to spawn. Our field surveys in a single watershed revealed that segregation of distinct spawning sites between the two forms was maintained within the watershed across multiple years. These spawning sites diverged in salinity and predator composition. Morphological and physiological divergence between the forms also occurs in the direction predicted by ecological differences between the spawning sites. Our data indicate that migration into divergent spawning habitats can be an important mechanism contributing to speciation and phenotypic divergence in anadromous fishes.  相似文献

Nondiapause pupae of Papilio machaon L. exhibit pupal colour diphenism comprising green–yellow and brown–white types. To understand the regulatory mechanism underlying the control of pupal colouration in P. machaon, the effect of environmental cues on diapause and nondiapause pupal colouration is investigated. When larvae reared under short‐day and long‐day conditions are allowed to pupate in sites with a smooth surface and a yellow background colour, all diapause pupae exhibit a brown–white type and 89.5% of nondiapause pupae exhibit a green–yellow type, respectively. With rough‐surface pupation sites, all diapause pupae exhibit brown–white and intermediate types, whereas a large proportion of nondiapause pupae exhibit brown–white and intermediate types, although some exhibit a green–yellow type. When extracts prepared from the head‐thoracic and thoracic‐abdominal regions of larval central nervous systems are injected into the ligated abdomens of P. machaon short‐day pharate pupae, all recipients exhibit a brown–white colouration. Furthermore, when each extract is injected into the ligated abdomen of Papilio xuthus L. short‐day pharate pupae with orange‐pupa‐inducing factor activity, recipients injected with the head‐thoracic extract exhibit the brown type, whereas those injected with the thoracic‐abdominal extract exhibit an orange colour. The results indicate that the response to the environmental cues of pupation site in P. machaon changes according to the photoperiodic conditions experienced during larval stages, and that at least two hormonal factors producing brown–white pupae are located in the larval central nervous system, with the secretion of these factors being regulated by the recognition of environmental cues in long‐day larvae.  相似文献

Parasitic wasps are an important component of the niche of Drosophila species. The susceptibility to the Cynipid Leptopilina boulardi was estimated in the seven sibling species of Drosophila belonging to the melanogaster subgroup. Three categories of Hies can be distinguished, according to the level of cellular immune reaction and success of parasitism. Drosophila melanogaster and D. mauritiana belong to the category 1, specified by no encapsulative reaction and a high rate of successful parasitism. Category 2, characterized by a moderate encapsulation rate and a high mortality include D. simulans.5, D. erecta and D. orena . Category 3, with D. yakuba and D. tcissien , is specified by a very low rate or absence of successful parasitism due to a highly efficient immune cellular reaction. This classification parallels the phylogenic relationship based upon polytene chromosome banding sequences. Such specific ditferences in susceptibility to parasites may plan an important role in the competition between these species in Africa.  相似文献

Gibberellin (GA) promoted rice (Oryza sativa L.) root elongation in a concentration-dependent manner with roots grown in 0.1 µm GA3 being 13.8% longer than controls. On the other hand, the roots of Tan-ginbozu, a semi-dwarf cultivar were 69.8% shorter in comparison with Nipponbare, a normal cultivar. Treatments with 10 µm uniconazole-P and 10 µm abscisic acid (ABA) caused decreases in root length in Tan-ginbozu by 44.6 and 79.2%, respectively. To investigate how GA influences rice root growth, proteome analysis techniques were applied. Extracted proteins were separated by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and analysed using an automated protein sequencer and mass spectrometer. Sixteen proteins show differences in accumulation levels as a result of treatment with GA3, uniconazole-P and ABA treatment and/or the difference between the semi-dwarf cultivar, Tan-ginbozu, and normal cultivars. Among these proteins, fructose-bisphosphate aldolase (EC 4.1.2.13) increased in roots treated with GA3, occurred in low levels in Tan-ginbozu roots, and decreased in roots treated with uniconazole-P or ABA. Moreover, roots from seedlings grown in 100 µm glucose were 9.1% longer than controls. These results indicate that increases in fructose-bisphosphate aldolase activity stimulate the glycolytic pathway and may play an important role in the GA-induced growth of roots.  相似文献
