A simple version of the immunocompetence handicap hypothesizesthat through condition-dependence, the size of the sexual traitmay be positively related to immune function at the populationlevel. In the present study, we investigated the relationshipbetween sexual advertisement and immune function in a naturalpopulation of male wolf spiders, Hygrolycosa rubrofasciata (Araneae:Lycosidae). Males of H. rubrofasciata have a costly and condition-dependentacoustic signal, courtship drumming. In the mating season, malesdrum against dry leaves while wandering around the habitat searchingfor receptive females. Males increase their mating success byincreasing their drumming rate and mobility. We used drummingrate and mobility measured without female proximity as estimatesof sexual advertisement. As estimates of male immune function,we used encapsulation rate and lytic activity. Encapsulationrate is a common challenging technique, which measures immuneresponse against multicellular parasites. Lytic activity isa monitoring technique, which measures immune response againstpathogens. Our results show that males with higher drummingrate had higher encapsulation rate. This suggests that femalesmight use drumming rate as a signal for choosing males withgood immunocompetence. Moreover, our results show that maleswith higher mobility had higher lytic activity. As females aremore likely to encounter those males that have higher mobility,this might also select males with better immune function. Ourresults suggest that the immunocompetence handicap might workalso among spiders, although we could not assess the causalityof the relationship between sexual selection and immune functionin this correlational study. 相似文献

A series of 52 young male white laboratory mice were starved for a maximum of five days, and 45 normally fed animals were used as controls. A group of experimental animals and a corresponding control group were sacrificed after two, three, and four days' starvation and after six, 12 and 17 days' refeeding. Even after two days the animals had lost weight, and the liver cells had diminished highly significantly. A return to the initial values was noted after 12 days' refeeding. In the experimental animals a strong negative correlation was noted between the cell count per field and body weight (r =–0.712, b =–7.520), while no such correlation was observed for the controls. The volume of the liver cells was reduced by 61.7 %, the volume of their nuclei by 16.2 % after four days' starvation. After two to three days' starvation the liver cells often showed a slight accumulation of fat. Mitoses were frequent in the liver cells during the stage of regeneration, when the cells had attained the same size as in the controls. 相似文献

The kidney fat was histologically examined of 27 spontaneously dead lambs of which 14 had starved. The lambs were born with mature fat, but in young animals a starvation period of more than 24 hrs. reduced the fat tissues and changed its cells towards the embryonal type built up of preadipocytes. These cells were smaller than the mature fat cells. Nucleus was large, round and situated in the centre of the cell. The slight eosinophilic, strongly diminished cytoplasm was some granulated and had some small fat droplets. SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells can be induced to differentiate into a neuronal phenotype by treatment with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA). In other cell systems, TPA treatment frequently leads to down-regulation of protein kinase C (PKC). However, we now report that TPA-treated and non-treated SH-SY5Y cells express PKC-alpha, but not PKC-beta and PKC-gamma, mRNA. Furthermore, only a slight down-regulation of the PKC-alpha protein could be seen during prolonged treatment with 16 nM TPA, the concentration giving optimal differentiation. In contrast, a higher concentration of TPA (1.6 microM) results in a poor neuronal differentiation and a complete down-regulation of PKC-alpha. PKC-alpha was rapidly translocated to the particulate fraction and remained membrane bound for at least 4 days during treatment with 16 nM TPA. In such cells a sustained increased level of the phosphorylated form of a 80,000 Dalton PKC-substrate was found. In addition to this sustained augmented phosphorylation, administration of fresh TPA at day 4 caused a small but reproducible further increased level of phosphorylated substrate. When the PKC activity was measured by the histone phosphorylation assay a substantial fraction of the initial enzyme activity could still be detected after 4 days of TPA treatment. Taken together, the data demonstrate that PKC remains functionally active during TPA induced differentiation of SH-SY5Y cells, which may suggest a continuous role for the enzyme during the differentiation process. 相似文献

Background
The species diversity of aphids and seasonal timing of their flight activity can have significant impacts on crop production, as aphid species differ in their ability to transmit plant viruses and flight timing affects virus epidemiology. The aim of the study was to characterise the species composition and phenology of aphid fauna in Finland in one of the northernmost intensive crop production areas of the world (latitude 64°).Methodology/Principal Findings
Flight activity was monitored in four growing seasons (2007–010) using yellow pan traps (YPTs) placed in 4–8 seed potato fields and a Rothamsted suction trap. A total of 58,528 winged aphids were obtained, identified to 83 taxa based on morphology, and 34 species were additionally characterised by DNA barcoding. Seasonal flight activity patterns analysed based on YPT catch fell into three main phenology clusters. Monoecious taxa showed early or middle-season flight activity and belonged to species living on shrubs/trees or herbaceous plants, respectively. Heteroecious taxa occurred over the entire potato growing season (ca. 90 days). Abundance of aphids followed a clear 3-year cycle based on suction trap data covering a decade. Rhopalosiphum padi occurring at the end of the potato growing season was the most abundant species. The flight activity of Aphis fabae, the main vector of Potato virus Y in the region, and Aphis gossypii peaked in the beginning of potato growing season.Conclusions/Significance
Detailed information was obtained on phenology of a large number aphid species, of which many are agriculturally important pests acting as vectors of plant viruses. Aphis gossypii is known as a pest in greenhouses, but our study shows that it occurs also in the field, even far in the north. The novel information on aphid phenology and ecology has wide implications for prospective pest management, particularly in light of climate change. 相似文献8.

We describe a statistical measure, Mass Distance Fingerprint, for automatic de novo detection of predominant peptide mass distances, i.e., putative protein modifications. The method's focus is to globally detect mass differences, not to assign peptide sequences or modifications to individual spectra. The Mass Distance Fingerprint is calculated from high accuracy measured peptide masses. For the data sets used in this study, known mass differences are detected at electron mass accuracy or better. The proposed method is novel because it works independently of protein sequence databases and without any prior knowledge about modifications. Both modified and unmodified peptides have to be present in the sample to be detected. The method can be used for automated detection of chemical/post-translational modifications, quality control of experiments and labeling approaches, and to control the modification settings of protein identification tools. The algorithm is implemented as a web application and is distributed as open source software. 相似文献
