Abstract.
  • 1 To understand the nature of male aggregations in Drosophila mycetophaga, data were collected on male and female distribution and male spacing on bracket fungi used as mating arenas in cool rainforests of south-eastern Australia.
  • 2 Both males and females appeared to be aggregated among bracket fungi that were used as mating arenas. Females were associated with large male aggregations. The probability of a fungus being occupied increased with its area. However, a multiple Poisson regression analysis suggested that fungus area did not affect female distribution when male number was controlled.
  • 3 The presence of female breeding and feeding resources did not determine where aggregations were formed, because there were aggregations on fungi without resources, and fungi with resources were not used more often than those without them.
  • 4 D.mycetophaga males did not select and defend territories within bracket fungi, and did not determine female access to areas. However, males were more evenly spaced than expected on the basis of a random distribution, suggesting that males kept apart from each other.
  • 5 The distribution of the different sexes and male spacing pattern supports the interpretation that D.mycetophaga has a lek mating system.

Abstract 1. We monitored three different‐sized wood ant (Formica aquilonia Yarrow) mounds over a 3‐year period in Finnish boreal forests dominated by Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.), to assess the seasonal temperature dependency of ant activity. Additionally, we also monitored Norway spruce trees around the mounds for descending honeydew foragers. 2. The amount of collected honeydew and prey and its composition, as well as the carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in honeydew and invertebrate prey was also investigated. 3. The number of warm days (average temperature above 20 °C) and the amount of precipitation differed among the years. Ant activity at the mounds (but not on the trees) was highly correlated with air temperature throughout the ant‐active season (May–September), but ant activity in spring and autumn was lower than in summer at similar temperatures. During all 3 years, honeydew played a major role in wood ant nutrition (78–92% of dry mass). Invertebrate prey was mainly Diptera (on average 26.2%), Coleoptera (12.5%), Aphidina (9.3%), and Arachnoida (8.5%). 4. The total amounts of C, N, and P input brought into the ant mounds in the form of food (both honeydew and prey) on the stand level were 12.6–39.0, 1.6–4.6 and 0.1–0.4 kg ha?1 year?1, respectively, which is equivalent to 2–6%, 12–33% and 27–58% of the fluxes in annual needle litterfall in typical boreal Norway spruce forests. Thus, wood ants can play a significant role in short term and local N and P cycling of boreal forest ecosystems.  相似文献

According to sperm competition models, a male spawning in a disfavoured role should have spermatozoa with higher velocity but shorter longevity compared with a male spawning in a favoured role. Moreover, immunosuppressive androgens are needed to produce both secondary sexual characters and sperm cells. The 'sperm protection' hypothesis suggests that the immunosuppressive action of androgens has evolved to protect haploid spermatozoa, which are antigenic, from autoimmune attacks. Therefore, a male with high sexual ornamentation may be more susceptible to diseases but may possess better quality ejaculate than his less ornamented rival. We studied sexual ornamentation (breeding tubercles), ejaculation quality (sperm concentration, longevity and spermatozoal velocity) and intensity of parasitism in the cyprinid, Rutilus rutilus . Sperm longevity and spermatozoal velocity were positively correlated. Males having elaborated sexual ornamentation had longer-lived sperm and more Myxobolus mülleri parasites in the liver compared with males with low ornamentation. However, no difference was found between males with different degrees of ornamentation with respect to sperm concentration, spermatozoal velocity or other parasites. Abstract.  1. Large colonies of ants are known to have a higher propensity for sexual offspring production, probably owing to their high capacity to exploit food resources.
2. The effects of food supplementation on the propensity for sexual offspring production, and whether it is linked with colony size, were investigated in an environment with poor resources (clear-cut areas).
3. Large colony size was associated with a higher propensity for sexual offspring production in food-supplemented colonies, whereas in non-supplemented control colonies an association with colony size was not found.
4. The results demonstrate that large colonies seem to have a higher capacity to exploit supplemented food. In addition, the production of sexual offspring was apparently limited by food availability in clear-cuts, especially for large colonies.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in immunocompetence are predicted by the hypothesized trade-off between reproduction and self-maintenance, whereby immune function is a measure of self-maintenance and reproductive effort is seasonally dependent. We examined seasonal patterns in immunological, haematological and body condition parameters for male and female freshwater fish. In two different populations, the relative size of the spleen and the chemotaxic migration activity of head kidney granulocytes decreased immediately before and after spawning, respectively. Those decreases were accompanied by an increase in haematocrit values shortly before and after spawning in both populations and a decrease in the relative body weight in one population, possibly due to physiological stress caused by increased activity during the spawning period. Breeding-related changes in other measures studied (phagocytosis activity of head kidney granulocytes, blood IgM concentration, white cell count and red cell count) were absent or inconsistent. Some of the results are in line with the idea of a trade-off between reproduction and immune defence. 1. Acoustic scattering from fish and macroinvertebrates was studied in a boreal Finnish lake at three echosounder frequencies (38, 120 and 200 kHz). Split-beam transducers with partly overlapping 7° beams were employed. Acoustic, fish and invertebrate sampling were undertaken simultaneously. Vertical gradients of temperature and oxygen concentration were measured during the exercise.
2. At all frequencies, a narrow scattering layer coincided with the thermocline. At 38 kHz, fish were detected well with practically no reverberation from invertebrates while 200 kHz detected both fish and invertebrates.
3. Minor differences in the magnitude of acoustic scattering from fish were found between frequencies and between depth layers, but scattering at different frequencies was correlated at all depths. Acoustic scattering and fish density indices from trawl catches, consisting mostly of smelt ( Osmerus eperlanus ) (97%) and vendace ( Coregonus albula ) (3%), were significantly correlated.
4. Acoustic scattering from invertebrates increased with sound frequency. Correlation analysis suggested that the invertebrate scattering was mostly induced by Chaoborus flavicans . A low frequency is recommended for estimating fish abundance without bias from reverberation induced by invertebrate scattering. Although fish and invertebrates can also be successfully discriminated at a single frequency by thresholding and cross filtering, the combination of a low and a high frequency is a more robust tool for effective fish-invertebrate discrimination.  相似文献

The systematic structure and postglacial population history of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus lacustris were explored in an allozyme survey of 65 populations across Northern Europe. A strong multilocus pattern of differentiation discriminated populations of the north‐east (north‐eastern Norway, northern Finland) from those in the west and the south (southern and central Scandinavia, Denmark, Poland). This principal division is attributed to postglacial colonization of the area by two main refugial races or lineages, one from the east (Russia), the other from the south (north‐western European continent). The strongly diverged Eastern and Western races (Nei's D= 0.3, from 22 loci) now meet in a secondary contact zone across a narrow sector of northernmost Norway. Genetic population compositions in this zone vary in a mosaic pattern, and show no evidence of reproductive incompatibility. Similar contacts of eastern and western lineages, far older than the latest glaciation, are now known from a number of taxa and they constitute a general pattern in Fennoscandian phylogeography. Within the Western Gammarus race, the populations through coastal north‐western Norway are further distinguished from those in southern Scandinavia and Denmark by a set of unique alleles at high frequencies (D = 0.12). This suggests an independent early colonization of the coastal region by another distinct stock, either along an early deglaciated coastal corridor from the south‐west, or directly from the ice‐free continental shelf off the Norwegian coast – a hypothesis that has also previously been presented for G. lacustris, and parallels controversial suggestions of local refugia for other taxa in Scandinavia. The reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) is a semidomesticatedholarctic ruminant subject to economic activity. Our researchwas carried out in Northern Finland, at latitude 69°10'N,where the daily light-dark rhythm has a polar pattern: constantdarkness starts on November 26th and lasts about 10 weeks, whilethe polar day of about 10 weeks starts on May 15th. We had previouslyfound distinct daily rhythms in reindeer melatonin secretionin autumn, winter and spring but not at all in summer. Herewe determine how the daily melatonin pattern develops afterthe period of polar day and how it disappears at the beginningof that period. Melatonin showed increased concentrations verysoon after the first sunset. Thereafter the daily pattern developedgradually and was fully developed around the autumn equinox.Its shape was asymmetric and the maximum amplitude occurrednear the end of the dark period. The disappearance of this dailypattern in spring was also gradual. The maximal concentrationsdepended on ambient illumination, especially the duration ofthe dark period. In spring the reindeer appeared to be moresensitive to light than in autumn. Additionally illuminationof the same magnitude suppressed serum melatonin levels moreeffectively before midnight than afterwards, which is in accordancewith the asymmetric secretion pattern. Melatonin secretion wasalways suppressed when the ambient illumination exceeded 1,0001x. The pattern of melatonin secretion in reindeer is differentfrom those described earlier and hence the reindeer may serveas a model for melatonin secretion at high latitudes. We suggestthat, in addition to the duration of the melatonin secretion,changes in amplitude are also of importance in the reindeer.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. One of the main themes in ecology is adaptation for survival in different habitats and the potential of the environment to regulate populations.
2. The effects of clear-cutting on nest-abandonment rate and local population sizes in the polydomous wood ant Formica aquilonia was studied, using uncut forest stands as controls.
3. The nest-abandonment rate was clearly higher in clear-cuts than in forest interiors. In clear-cuts, 39% of pre-deforestation nests and 73% of new bud-nests were abandoned 4–5 years after deforestation, whereas in forest interiors fewer than 2% of nests were abandoned at the same time period. Local population size decreased 30% in clear-cuts, but fewer than 2% in forest interiors.
4. The results demonstrate that despite modern logging practices in which mechanical harming of nest mounds is reduced, nest mounds are abandoned at high rate, and despite frequent establishment of new bud-nests, populations start to decline.
5. The likely reason for the high nest-abandonment rate in clear-cuts is a combination of changed abiotic conditions, resource limitation, and disturbed reproduction.
6. Species that are sensitive to changes in the size of habitat patch, such as F. aquilonia , likely are harmed by logging, even employing biodiversity oriented management practices. Hence there is a need for conservation actions that are based on the size of protection areas.  相似文献

In theory, selection for effective camouflage (i.e. dull coloration) in fish should be strongest when the conditions for visual predation are most favourable, such as in structurally simple pelagic habitats. By contrast, in more sheltered (e.g. littoral) habitats, selection may favour effective intra‐specific communication (i.e. bright coloration) (at the expense of crypsis). Poor transparency, as in highly humic waters, should constrain colour adaptations. We investigated phenotypic variation in body coloration of Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) in littoral and pelagic habitats of four humic boreal lakes. Perch from the most transparent lake had the lightest and less coloured belly and perch were more colourful in the littoral habitats than in the pelagic areas, with the pattern being clearest in the most transparent lake. In addition, perch in the most transparent lake exhibited sexual dichromatism, with males having a more colourful belly than the females, whereas no indications of sexual dichromatism were found in more humic lakes. Moreover, in the most transparent lake, the condition of fish correlated with bright belly coloration in the littoral, but with dull belly coloration in the pelagic habitat. The results obtained in the present study suggest that selection on perch coloration may differ between lakes as a result of visual properties of the water, and within lakes as a result of divergent selection for camouflage and communication in pelagic and littoral habitats. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 47–59.  相似文献
