The initiation of hybrid DNA in the b2 spore colour gene was investigated by the analysis of non-Mendelian segregation asci in the progeny of crosses involving several allelic b2 mutations. These analyses showed that, instead of the unique initiation region of hybrid DNA in b2, assumed previously by Paquette and Rossignol (1978), there are multiple sites for hybrid DNA starting. They produce major and minor fractions of hybrid DNA. The major fraction starts upstream of the left end of the gene, propagates rightwards and can cover its entire length. The minor fractions do not span the left b2 end. One of them is detected within the left half of the gene, the others within its right half.  相似文献

We conducted visual fish surveys in coexisting mangrove-coral (CMC) habitats in Panama to analyze the effect of coral presence in mangrove habitats on the fish assemblage. Our study revealed that CMC habitats harbor distinct fish assemblages compared to mangrove habitats without coral, with greater species richness and increased herbivore abundance. Urinary iodine excretion was assessed in 642 healthy children aged 10 mo (n=243), 2 yr (n=183), and 4 yr (n=216) living in the Paris area and originating from continental France (60.3%), North Africa (13.8%), the West Indies (9.1%), West Africa (8.3%), Southeast Asia (4.8%), and southern Europe (3.8%). Mild impairment of neurological (reflexes, tone, audiometry) and intellectual development (Brunet-Lézine scale) was assessed in relation to iodine status. Iodine excretions (median values) were 18.4, 11.9, and 10.9 μg/100 mL at 10 mo, 2 yr, and 4 yr, respectively, and risk of mild iodine deficiency (5–10 μg/100 mL) was 18.1%, 34.8%, and 38.3% for the same age groups. No relationship was found between anthropometry, global development quotient, and iodine status. High hearing thresholds were more commonly associated with lower iodine excretion, suggesting mild hearing defects. In spite of iodine prophylaxis, the risk of mild to moderate iodine deficiency still exists in France and in a number of European countries. Evaluation of neurological sequels of borderline iodine status is a major public health problem in European communities.  相似文献

Modifications in a zoo exhibit were made to increase the arboreality of an aged female diana monkey, and to increase her use of the central portion of the exhibit where a new food shelf had been added. Branches, which formed ramps to this shelf, also were added. Following these changes, the aged female's arboreality increased slightly, and her use of the central portion of the exhibit increased significantly. Changes in habitat use following these modifications also were noted in the other two diana monkeys in the group. These results suggest that zoo habitats can be made more usable for individuals whose behavioral capabilities might be limited due to age or physical disability.  相似文献

A primase activity associated to DNA polymerase alpha from rat liver is described. Both activities were absent in normal adult rat liver but were concomitantly induced after partial hepatectomy. As previously shown for polymerase alpha and DNA topoisomerase II, primase activity reached a maximum value 40-43 h after the partial removal of the liver. Primase activity was shown to catalyze dNMP incorporation on unprimed single-stranded DNA template (M13 DNA) in the presence of rNTP. The activity was not detectable on poly(dA) or poly(dG) but was efficient on poly(dT) or poly(dC). However, the reliability of the primase assay in the presence of poly(dC) was dependent upon the degree of purification of the enzyme. The ribo primers were about 10 nucleotides long, and the reaction was completely independent of alpha-amanitin, a strong inhibitor of RNA polymerases II and III. Primase and polymerase were found tightly associated. A cosedimentation on a 5-20% sucrose gradient was always obtained, independent of the ionic strength. There was also a close coincidence between alpha-polymerase and primase activities during phosphocellulose, hydroxylapatite, and single-stranded DNA Ultrogel chromatography. It has been previously demonstrated by us and others that primase and alpha-polymerase are on separated polypeptides. The association of two activities in the replication complex and the conditions allowing their separation are discussed.  相似文献
