Competition in the gradostat: the role of the communication rate

In this paper we study a mathematical model of competition between two species of microorganisms for a single limiting nutrient in a laboratory device called a gradostat. A gradostat consists of several (we consider only two) chemostats (CSTR's) connected together so that material can flow between the vessels in such a way that a nutrient gradient is established. Our model is a slightly modified version of one considered recently by Jäger et al. [3], in that the rate of exchange of material between the two vessels (the communication rate) is allowed to differ from the dilution rate. The outcome of competition turns out to be surprisingly sensitive to variation of the communication rate. We identify several coexistence regimes in parameter space and describe a method for obtaining operating diagrams for given pairs of competing microorganisms.Research supported in part by NSF Grant DMS 8521605     

Carbohydrate constituents of Lessonia trabeculata

D-mannitol was the only low-molecular weight carbohydrate isolated from ethanolic extracts of Lessonia trabeculata blades. After sequential extraction with water, acid and alkali, laminaran, fucose-containing polysaccharides and alginic acid were also isolated. Fucose-containing polysaccharide from the acidic extract was separated into three fractions by ion exchange chromatography. Alginic acid was the major polysaccharide obtained in the sequential extraction.     

Blood chemistry of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) maintained in an indoor-outdoor environment: Primate comparisons

Blood chemistry values were collected over a three-year period from at least 10 colony-born and 24 wild-born apparently normal common marmosets. BUN, SGOT, creatinine, calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, protein, albumin, cholesterol, triglycerides, uric and glucose values were determined. A statistical comparison of baseline values was made between wild-born, colony-born, male and female marmosets. Also the same comparison was made between common marmosets and cotton-top tamarins, white lipped tamarins and human subjects.     

Discovery of TAK-960: An orally available small molecule inhibitor of polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1)

Using structure-based drug design, we identified and optimized a novel series of pyrimidodiazepinone PLK1 inhibitors resulting in the selection of the development candidate TAK-960. TAK-960 is currently undergoing Phase I evaluation in adult patients with advanced solid malignancies.
