Dreams are often used to promote religion, or to propagate an interpretation of religion, or to bring political ideas to the fore. A dream can be used as an indication of divine help and thus it is a perfect tool for promoting ideas. Dreams figure in religious propaganda in Christian, Jewish, and Muslim traditions (e.g., in Osama bin Laden's tapes). In classical literature, we find many kings, emperors, or generals who had visions or dreams, especially in association with their accession to power. It is the thesis of this article that in the encounter between Jewish (-Christian) cultures and the Hellenistic world dreams were shared as possible means of divine communication. An important example is the dream in Acts 16,9?10, the most Hellenistic dream of the New Testament. This dream is part of a larger unit, Paul's new move from Asia to Europe. I will try to show that the author of Acts combines here the story of Aeneas (e.g., as told by Virgil) and the story of Jesus, an interesting merging of two cultures. Limited chymotryptic cleavage of turkey gizzard calponin yields a 13 kDa fragment which could be purified by its ability to bind to Sepharose-immobilized tropomyosin. This 13 kD polypeptide is shown to be derived from a 22 kDa fragment. Complete amino acid sequence analysis of the 13 kD and 22 kD fragments reveals high homology with the formerly characterized smooth muscle-specific protein SM22 alpha (Pearlstone, J.R., Weber, M., Lees-Miller, J.P., Carpenter, M.R. and Smillie L.B., 1987, J. Biol. Chem. 262, 5985-5991) and the product of gene mp20 of Drosophila (Ayme-Southqate, A., Lasko, P., French, C, and Pardue, M.L. [(1989) J. Cell Biol. 108, 521-531]. Futhermore we recognize sequence elements of a putative actin-binding domain of alpha-actinin, the calpactin I or p 36 sequence, and a consensus motif present in the repeats of the gene product of the candidate unc-87 gene of C. elegans (S.D. A model is presented to study and quantify the contribution of all available sensory information to human standing based on optimal estimation theory. In the model, delayed sensory information is integrated in such a way that a best estimate of body orientation is obtained. The model approach agrees with the present theory of the goal of human balance control. The model is not based on purely inverted pendulum body dynamics, but rather on a three-link segment model of a standing human on a movable support base. In addition, the model is non-linear and explicitly addresses the problem of multisensory integration and neural time delays. A predictive element is included in the controller to compensate for time delays, necessary to maintain erect body orientation. Model results of sensory perturbations on total body sway closely resemble experimental results. Despite internal and external perturbations, the controller is able to stabilise the model of an inherently unstable standing human with neural time delays of 100 ms. It is concluded, that the model is capable of studying and quantifying multisensory integration in human stance control. We aim to apply the model in (1) the design and development of prostheses and orthoses and (2) the diagnosis of neurological balance disorders. Dynamics of bryophytes were followed in a chalk grassland in 4 plots, 25×25 cm, each subdivided in to 400 subplots, in which every 3–4 months the presence of all bryophyte species was recorded. During the first 14 months no successional trends were visible. However, dynamics on the scale of one subplot were considerable. Degree of dynamics was markedly negatively correlated with original presence in the plots. Several explanations for this correlation are discussed.  相似文献

Actin was purified from calf thymus, bovine brain and SV40-transformed mouse 3T3 cells grown in tissue culture. Isoelectric focusing analysis showed the presence of the two actin polypeptides beta and gamma typical for non-muscle actins in all three actins. Tryptic and thermolytic peptides accounting for the complete amino-acid sequence of the cytoplasmic actins were separated and isolated by preparative fingerprint techniques. All peptides were characterized by amino-acid analysis and compared with the corresponding peptides from rabbit skeletal muscle actin. Peptides which differed in amino-acid composition from the corresponding skeletal muscle actin peptides were subjected to sequence analysis in order to localize the amino-acid replacement. The results obtained show that all three mammalian cytoplasmic actins studied contain the same amino-acid exchanges indicating that mammalian cytoplasmic actins are very similar if not identical in amino-acid sequence. The presence of two different isoelectric species beta and gamma in cytoplasmic actins from higher vertebrates is acccounted for by the isolation of two very similar but not identical amino-terminal peptides in all three actin preparations. The nature of the amino-acid replacements in these two peptides not only accounts for the different isoelectric forms but also shows that beta and gamma cytoplasmic actins are the products of two different structural genes expressed in the same cell. The total number of amino-acid replacements so far detected in the comparison of these cytoplasmic actins and skeletal muscle actin is 25 for the beta chain and 24 for the gamma chain. With the exception of the amino-terminal three or four residues, which are responsible for the isoelectric differences, the replacements do not involve charged amino acids. The exchanges are not randomly distributed. No replacements were detected in regions 18--75 and 299--356 while the regions between residues 2--17 and 259--298 show a high number of replacements. In addition documentation for a few minor revisions of the amino acid sequence of rabbit skeletal muscle actin is provided.  相似文献

Theory predicts that overall population sex ratios should be around parity. But when individual females can receive higher fitness from offspring of one sex, they may benefit by biasing their brood sex ratios accordingly. In lekking species, higher variance in male reproductive success relative to that of females predicts that male offspring gain disproportionately from favorable rearing conditions. Females should therefore produce male-biased broods when they are in a position to raise higher quality offspring: i.e., in better body condition or when they reproduce earlier in the breeding season. To investigate these hypotheses, we studied brood sex ratios of lance-tailed manakins Chiroxiphia lanceolata . We found that overall sex ratios and mean brood sex ratios were not different from random expectation. Brood sex ratios were not related to laying date or female body condition. However, we detected a quadratic relationship between brood sex ratios and maternal age: both young (1–2 years) and old (8+ years) females produced female-biased brood sex ratios. This relationship was most clear in a year also distinguished by early rainy and breeding seasons. We suggest that breeding inexperience in young females and senescence in older females is the most plausible explanation for these results, and that the relationship between female age and brood sex ratio is mediated by environmental conditions.  相似文献

Human hemopoietic stem cells (HSC) have been shown to engraft, differentiate, and proliferate in the hemopoietic tissues of sublethally irradiated NOD/LtSZ scid/scid (NOD/SCID) mice. We used this model to study homing, survival, and expansion of human HSC populations from different sources or phenotype. We observed that CD34+ cells homed specifically to bone marrow (BM) and spleen, but by 3 days after injection, survived only in the BM. These BM-homed CD34+ cells proliferated intensively and gave rise to a 12-fold, 5.5-fold, and 4-fold expansion in 3 days for umbilical cord blood, adult mobilized peripheral blood, and adult BM-derived cells, respectively. By injection of purified subpopulations, it was demonstrated that both CD34+38+ and CD34+38- umbilical cord blood HSC homed to the BM and expanded. Importantly, kinetics of expansion were different: CD34+38+ cells started to increase in cell number from day 3 onwards, and by 4 wk after injection, virtually all CD34+ cells had disappeared. In contrast, CD34+38- cells remained quiescent during the first week and started to expand intensively from the third week on. In this paper, we have shown that homing, survival, and expansion of stem cells are three independent phenomena important in the early phase of BM engraftment and that kinetics of engraftment differ between CD34+38+ and CD34+38- cells.  相似文献

Dyslipidemia is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and atherosclerosis. When dyslipidemia coincides with other metabolic disorders such as obesity, hypertension, and glucose intolerance, defined as the metabolic syndrome (MS), individuals present an elevated risk to develop type 2 diabetes (T2D) as well as CVD. Because the MS epidemic represents a growing public health problem worldwide, the development of therapies remains a major challenge. Alterations of bile acid pool regulation in T2D have revealed a link between bile acid and metabolic homeostasis. The bile acid receptors farnesoid X receptor (FXR) and TGR5 both regulate lipid, glucose, and energy metabolism, rendering them potential pharmacological targets for MS therapy. This review discusses the mechanisms of metabolic regulation by FXR and TGR5 and the utility relevance of natural and synthetic modulators of FXR and TGR5 activity, including bile acid sequestrants, in the treatment of the MS.  相似文献
