Background
Diabetes and hypertension increase arterial stiffness and cardiovascular events in all societies studied so far; sub-Saharan African studies are sparse. We investigated factors affecting arterial function in Ghanaians with diabetes, hypertension, both or neither.Method
Testing the hypothesis that arterial stiffness would progressively increase from controls to multiply affected patients, 270 participants were stratified into those with diabetes or hypertension only, with both, or without either. Cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), heart–ankle pulse wave velocity (haPWV), aortic PWV (PWVao) by Arteriograph, aortic and brachial blood pressures (BP), were measured. Results
In patients with both diabetes and hypertension compared with either alone, values were higher of CAVI (mean?±?SD, 8.3?±?1.2 vs 7.5?±?1.1 and 7.4?±?1.1 units; p?<?0.05), PWVao (9.1?±?1.4 vs 8.7?±?1.9 and 8.1?±?0.9 m/s; p?<?0.05) and haPWV (8.5?±?1 vs 7.9?±?1 and 7.2?±?0.7 m/s; p?<?0.05) respectively. In multivariate analysis, age, having diabetes or hypertension and BMI were independently associated with CAVI in all participants (β?=?0.49, 0.2, 0.17 and -0.2 units; p?<?0.01, respectively). Independent determinants of PWVao were heart rate, systolic BP and age (β?=?0.42, 0.27 and 0.22; p?<?0.01), and for haPWV were systolic BP, age, BMI, diabetes and hypertension status (β?=?0.46, 0.32, -0.2, 0.2 and 0.11; p?<?0.01).Conclusion
In this sub-Saharan setting with lesser atherosclerosis than the western world, arterial stiffness is significantly greater in patients with coexistent diabetes and hypertension but did not differ between those with either diabetes or hypertension only. Simple, reproducibly measured PWV/CAVI may offer effective and efficient targets for intervention.2.

Habitat can be rendered less suitable because of numerous factors, including the presence of humans. Human disturbance is implicated as a threat for hundreds of amphibian species, but there is a dearth of peer‐reviewed literature addressing this topic, and what little is available focuses on adults. Here we present the results of a study examining the effects human disturbance may have on the distribution and behaviour of juvenile Eastern African leaf litter frogs of the genus Arthroleptis. Our findings show that human activity affects the local density of juveniles and strongly influences escape behaviour. These results indicate that costs of human disturbance to juvenile frogs may be severe and that human disturbance may play a role in fragmenting local frog populations. 相似文献

Host‐associated differentiation in a highly polyphagous, sexually reproducing insect herbivore 下载免费PDF全文
Insect herbivores may undergo genetic divergence on their host plants through host‐associated differentiation (HAD). Much of what we know about HAD involves insect species with narrow host ranges (i.e., specialists) that spend part or all their life cycle inside their hosts, and/or reproduce asexually (e.g., parthenogenetic insects), all of which are thought to facilitate HAD. However, sexually reproducing polyphagous insects can also exhibit HAD. Few sexually reproducing insects have been tested for HAD, and when they have insects from only a handful of potential host‐plant populations have been tested, making it difficult to predict how common HAD is when one considers the entire species' host range. This question is particularly relevant when considering insect pests, as host‐associated populations may differ in traits relevant to their control. Here, we tested for HAD in a cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) pest, the cotton fleahopper (CFH) (Pseudatomoscelis seriatus), a sexually reproducing, highly polyphagous hemipteran insect. A previous study detected one incidence of HAD among three of its host plants. We used Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers to assess HAD in CFH collected from an expanded array of 13 host‐plant species belonging to seven families. Overall, four genetically distinct populations were found. One genetically distinct genotype was exclusively associated with one of the host‐plant species while the other three were observed across more than one host‐plant species. The relatively low degree of HAD in CFH compared to the pea aphid, another hemipteran insect, stresses the likely importance of sexual recombination as a factor increasing the likelihood of HAD. 相似文献

From 2001 to 2004, field studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of the ecorational insecticides SpinTor (spinosad), BotaniGard (Beauveria bassiana), Neemix (azadirachtin), and Surround (kaolin) against crucifer flea beetle on canola, Brassica napus L., at the cotyledon stage. The ecorational treatments were compared with a standard foliar chemical insecticide, Capture (bifenthrin), and the chemical seed treatment insecticide Helix XTra (thiamethoxam). This study indicated that flea beetle injury was lower for Helix XTra, Capture, and the ecorational insecticide SpinTor. SpinTor was less effective when flea beetle populations were relatively high (200-300 per trap-week). Yields for chemical insecticide treatments were always greater than SpinTor, with differences being the smallest (68-374 kg/ha) at low levels of flea beetle feeding injury. Differences were greatest when canola seedling injury was high (775-1,364 kg/ha). Yield differences between the conventional insecticides and BotaniGard, Neemix, and Surround were 119-439 and 61-2,248 kg/ha at low and high flea beetle feeding injury, respectively. Although yield differences between SpinTor and chemical insecticides were relatively small at lower levels of flea beetle injury, net losses ranged from $47 to $151/ha when SpinTor was used as an alternative to a standard chemical seed treatment, Helix XTra. This suggests that SpinTor would not be a viable alternative to the chemical insecticide. Net losses ranged from $30 to $266/ha when BotaniGard, Neemix, and Surround were used as alternatives to the seed treatment. 相似文献

Studies were done comparing the insecticides SpinTor (spinosad), BotaniGard (Beauveria bassiana), Neemix (azadirachtin), and Surround (kaolin, a clay) with conventional chemical insecticides Capture (bifenthrin) and Helix XTra (thiamethoxam), all applied at seven rates in a 7-d assay to assess their impact on adult crucifer flea beetle, Phyllotreta cruciferae (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Lethal time (LT) required for 25, 50, and 75% mortality (LT25, LT50, and LT75) and relative potencies for the insecticide concentration groupings (0, 1X-1.5X, and 2X- 4X) were estimated for each treatment by using survival functions. P. cruciferae mortality increased in response to increasing concentrations, especially for Helix XTra, Capture and SpinTor. After 2 d of exposure in 2002, mortality ranged from 54 to 78% for Helix XTra, from 60 to 94% for Capture, and from 66 to 92% for SpinTor across concentrations. In 2003, flea beetle mortality ranged from 37 to 60%, from 29 to 63%, and from 23 to 52% on exposure to Helix XTra, Capture, and SpinTor, respectively, for 2 d. The LT50 and relative potencies of the insecticides were in the order of Helix XTra, Capture, and SpinTor > BotaniGard, Neemix, and Surround. In 2002, LT50 values were 1 and 2 d for Capture and SpinTor, 2 d for BotaniGard, and 3 d for Neemix and Surround. In 2003, LT50 values occurred between 2 and 4 d after exposure to Helix XTra, Capture, and SpinTor, with LT50 values of 5-7 d on exposure to BotaniGard, Neemix, and Surround. SpinTor seems to be a suitable ecorational insecticide in canola, Brassica napus L., for P. cruciferae management. 相似文献

Background
The Plasmodium falciparum pre-erythrocytic stage candidate vaccine RTS,S is being developed for protection of young children against malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. RTS,S formulated with the liposome based adjuvant AS01E or the oil-in-water based adjuvant AS02D induces P. falciparum circumsporozoite (CSP) antigen-specific antibody and T cell responses which have been associated with protection in the experimental malaria challenge model in adults. Methods
This study was designed to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity induced over a 19 month period by three vaccination schedules (0,1-, 0,1,2- and 0,1,7-month) of RTS,S/AS01E and RTS,S/AS02D in children aged 5–17 months in two research centers in Ghana. Control Rabies vaccine using the 0,1,2-month schedule was used in one of two study sites. Results
Whole blood antigen stimulation followed by intra-cellular cytokine staining showed RTS,S/AS01E induced CSP specific CD4 T cells producing IL-2, TNF-α, and IFN-γ. Higher T cell responses were induced by a 0,1,7-month immunization schedule as compared with a 0,1- or 0,1,2-month schedule. RTS,S/AS01E induced higher CD4 T cell responses as compared to RTS,S/AS02D when given on a 0,1,7-month schedule. Conclusions
These findings support further Phase III evaluation of RTS,S/AS01E. The role of immune effectors and immunization schedules on vaccine protection are currently under evaluation.Trial Registration

The Coastal Wetlands Management Project (CWMP), funded by the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the Ghana Wildlife Department, seeks to preserve the ecological integrity of coastal lagoons that serve as important sites for migratory waterbirds. This report describes the geomorphology, hydrology, soils, water chemistry, and vegetation of the Muni-Pomadze Ramsar site. Muni lagoon is a saline, shallow water lagoon separated from the sea by a sand bar which may be breached occasionally. The bulk of the rainfall in the catchment evaporates or flows as surface runoff into three streams that empty into Muni lagoon. Open water in the lagoon varies seasonally from 100 ha in the dry season to over 1000 ha in the wet season. The natural flora of the site can be divided into four main types; flood plain (including mangrove and wetland vegetation), dune vegetation, riverine vegetation, and terrestrial vegetation on elevated ground. The latter consists of a combination of grasslands, thickets, and Eucalyptus plantations. Fifty-three percent of the site is classified as natural vegetation. An additional 32.5% is agricultural land and 12.6% is residential area for the 11 communities within the site. The main source of employment are farming or fishing. The area surrounding Muni lagoon is used extensively for bushmeat hunting and as the tribal hunting grounds of the Efutu people. Apart from the global importance of the Muni-Pomadze site for biodiversity, management of the site is further justified by its considerable potential for development as an income-generating and educational nature reserve with an eco-cultural theme, managed by the local communities in partnership with the governmental and non-governmental conservation agencies. 相似文献

beta-2-Microglobulin (beta2m) is deposited as amyloid fibrils in the bones and joints of patients undergoing long-term dialysis treatment as a result of kidney failure. Previous work has shown that biologically relevant amounts of Cu(II) can cause beta2m to be converted to amyloid fibrils under physiological conditions in vitro. In this work, dynamic light scattering, mass spectrometry, and size-exclusion chromatography are used to characterize the role that Cu plays in the formation of oligomeric intermediates that precede fibril formation. Cu(II) is found to be necessary for the stability of the dimer and an initial form of the tetramer. The initially formed tetramer then undergoes a structural change to a state that no longer binds Cu(II) before progressing to a hexameric state. Based on these results, we propose that the lag phase associated with beta2m fibril formation is partially accounted for by the structural transition of the tetramer that results in Cu(II) loss. Consistent with this observation is the determination that the mature beta2m amyloid fibrils do not contain Cu. Thus, Cu(II) appears to play a catalytic role by enabling the organization of the necessary oligomeric intermediates that precede beta2m amyloid formation. 相似文献
