Summary
Leucaena leucocephala generally produces pods with more than 7–9 seeds. This is regulated by the stigmatic inhibition of pollen grain germination when the pollen grains are less than a critical number in the stigma. This number-dependent inhibition of pollen grain germination is effected by a pH-dependent proteinaceous inhibitor active at the stigmatic pH. Only when the pollen grains in the stigma exceed the critical number, they inactivate the inhibitor by collectively raising the stigmatic pH and thus overcoming the inhibition. The adaptive significance of such pre-fertilization mechanism for the female in inciting mate competition among the pollen grains is discussed. The evolution of en masse pollen grain dispersal units is explained as a sexual selection strategy by males in response to such stigmatic inhibition by females. 相似文献

DDT and DDE were detected in the milk of 51 nursing mothers in Costa Rica. In the provinces of Puntarenas, Guanacaste and Limón, where a campaign against malaria took place during the last three decades and where crops are intensively sprayed, the amount of total DDT ranges from 0.12 to 2.60 ppm (mean 1.27 ppm), comparatively, the data of total DDT yielded an average of 0.11 ppm (range 0.01-1.22 ppm) in the provinces of San José, Heredia and Cartago, not so intensively exposed to pesticides. Santalum album L. is an economically important tropical tree species. Owing to extensive logging, changes in land-use patterns and poor
natural regeneration, the natural sandal populations are rapidly dwindling. It is feared that such threats could easily undermine
the genetic diversity of sandal populations. Effective measures to prevent such loss are prerequisite. We have developed baseline
data on the levels of genetic diversity and its distribution on a geographic scale for sandal in India. Based on Geographic
Information System, distribution map of sandal was developed and found that the populations were geographically more concentrated
in the Deccan plateau. It was found that, for past 53 years, there was a monotonic decrease in the extraction of sandal in
the state of Karnataka, India. Using allozyme markers, the genetic diversity of 19 sandal populations in peninsular India
were determined and over all observed heterzygosity (Ho) was found to be 31%. The percent Ho was positively correlated with the density of the sandal populations (r = 0.44) and with increasing longitude it was found to be negatively correlated (r = −0.51). The dendrogram analysis indicated a clear clustering of sandal populations based on their geographic occurrence.
The Deccan plateau populations were found to be genetically the most diverse and seemed to represent the ‘hot-spot’ of sandal
genetic resources in peninsular India. Our results have important implications for the conservation strategies for sandal
populations in peninsular India and can be applied for the conservation of other taxa as well. 相似文献

The binding of receptor-recognized forms of α2-macroglobulin (α2M) to macrophage α2M signaling receptors increases inositol-1,4,5-triphosphate synthesis and induces Ca2+ mobilization. In this report, we demonstrate that ligation of the macrophage α2M signaling receptor is also associated with synthesis of platelet activating factor (PAF) by both the de novo and remodeling pathways. Both α2M-methylamine and a cloned and expressed 20-kDa receptor binding fragment (RBF) from rat α2M+, stimulated macrophage synthesis of PAF from [3H]acetate, [3H]methylcholine, and 1-O-[3H]alkyl lyso-PAF by two- to threefold. PAF levels reached a peak in 20 min after the cells were exposed to α2M-methylamine or RBF; they remained elevated for about 1 h after ligand addition to the cells. When [3H]methylcholine was the substrate, pertussis toxin did not block PAF synthesis, but the protein kinase C inhibitor staurosporin reduced synthesis by 65–70%. Cycloheximide completely abolished the increase in synthesis of PAF by macrophages exposed to α2M-methylamine. By contrast, when [3H]acetate was employed as a precursor, staurosporin or cycloheximide did not abolish the increase in PAF synthesis. These studies suggest that protein kinase C is necessary for the induction of the de novo pathway by α2M-methylamine. Both α2M-methylamine and RBF stimulated the activity of lyso-PAF acetyltransferase by about fourfold. Both ligands also stimulated the activity of PAF acetylhydrolase by about six- to sevenfold, indicating that ligation of the α2M signaling receptor also regulates the degradation of PAF. The ability of receptor-recognized forms of α2M to regulate levels of PAF suggests that α2M-proteinase complexes not only regulate macrophage function by activating intracellular signaling but also may indirectly regulate the function of other cells that cannot bind α2M-proteinase complexes. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Squash (Cucurbita moschata) is one of the most important crops in tropical countries. Geminiviruses are an important group of plant pathogens. In 2002 a new begomovirus was reported to naturally infect squash and some other crops in Costa Rica. Our objective was to compare, using molecular techniques, the extraction and further purification of DNA from squash by different extraction protocols and storage methods. A single infected sample was collected, half of the material was stored frozen at ?70°C, and the remainder was stored dehydrated in silica gel (SG). Total nucleic acids (TNAs) were extracted by three different protocols and were quantified by fluorometry, and the quality was analysed by electrophoresis in agarose gels, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the virus genome, dot blot and Southern blot hybridization. Even though the tissue stored in SG yielded a higher amount of TNAs, the genetic material exhibited lower integrity and this made it useful exclusively for the detection of geminiviral DNA by PCR amplification of short viral sequences and by hybridization with short viral probes. The Dellaporta method proved to be the most effective for the detection of geminiviral DNA in infected squash tissue. Although the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide method showed similar results, the procedure is more time‐consuming.
