A preliminary survey of the few units of the small-scale glass bangle industry in Firozabad, Agra District, Uttar Pradesh, indicated that the workers were exposed to severe degrees of heat stress during various operations in the manufacturing processes. A more detailed study in eight glass bangle units was therefore undertaken to make quantitative estimates of heat stress on exposed workers in the summer season. The thermal data collected confirmed that the heat stress on the workers was severe but measurement of certain physiological indicators revealed relatively low levels of strain amongst the exposed workers. The findings could be attributable to high degrees of acclimatization, but further observations in the field supplemented by studies on simulated exposures of volunteers in a climatic chamber seem to be warranted. 相似文献

The antibacterial and anti-biofilm activities of propolis have been intensively reported. However, the application of this folk remedy as a means to prevent biomedical implant contamination has yet to be completely evaluated. In response to the significant resistant and infectious attributes of biofilms, biomaterials engineered to possess specific chemical and physical properties were immobilized with metal free Russian propolis ethanol extracts (MFRPEE), a known antibacterial agent. The results obtained from this study begin to examine the application of MFRPEE as a novel alternative method for the prevention of medical and biomedical implant infections. When constructed under specific experimental conditions, immobilized biomaterials showed excellent stability when subjected to simulated body fluid and fetal bovine serum. The ability of immobilized biomaterials to specifically target pathogens (both Gram-positive and Gram-negative biofilm forming bacteria), while promoting tissue cell growth, renders these biomaterials as potential candidates for clinical applications. 相似文献

Photoperiod plays an important role in controlling the feeding rhythmicity of juvenile fishes. Studies on feeding and spatial distribution pattern were made on wild populations of different juvenile stages of Chitala chitala, a threatened species in India. Results indicated that the prey preference of the fish increased with advancement of developmental stages. Moreover, nocturnal feeding was found to be more significant in the juveniles. Thus, feeding pattern of the different juvenile stages of Chitala is characterized by voracious predatory activity at dark condition. The vector controlling potential of the juvenile stages of Chitala specifically on mosquito and chironomid larvae was also significant. Studies on the distribution pattern of juvenile fishes were made with various combinations, viz. with or without food, in open surface and structured environments and observed during day as well as in dark regime. The juvenile distribution was clumped in open and closed environment during day time to minimize the chances of predation and juvenile mortality irrespective of food availability. A random distribution of juvenile fishes seemed to be advantageous for increasing feeding activity as observed in the experiment. This study is a pointer to the survival strategy of the larvae of C. chitala in their natural habitat which may be important from the perspective of conservation. 相似文献

The development of fetal brain is influenced by nutrients such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6) and choline. Phosphatidylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase (PEMT) catalyzes the biosynthesis of phosphatidylcholine from phosphatidylethanolamine enriched in DHA and many humans have functional genetic polymorphisms in the PEMT gene. Previously, it was reported that Pemt−/− mice have altered hippocampal development. The present study explores whether abnormal phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis causes altered incorporation of DHA into membranes, thereby influencing brain development, and determines whether supplemental dietary DHA can reverse some of these changes. Pregnant C57BL/6 wild type (WT) and Pemt−/− mice were fed a control diet, or a diet supplemented with 3 g/kg of DHA, from gestational day 11 to 17. Brains from embryonic day 17 fetuses derived from Pemt−/− dams fed the control diet had 25–50% less phospholipid-DHA as compared with WT (p < 0.05). Also, they had 60% more neural progenitor cell proliferation (p < 0.05), 60% more neuronal apoptosis (p < 0.01), and 30% less calretinin expression (p < 0.05; a marker of neuronal differentiation) in the hippocampus compared with WT. The DHA-supplemented diet increased fetal brain Pemt−/− phospholipid-DHA to WT levels, and abrogated the neural progenitor cell proliferation and apoptosis differences. Although this diet did not change proliferation in the WT group, it halved the rate of apoptosis (p < 0.05). In both genotypes, the DHA-supplemented diet increased calretinin expression 2-fold (p < 0.05). These results suggest that the changes in hippocampal development in the Pemt−/− mouse could be mediated by altered DHA incorporation into membrane phospholipids, and that maternal dietary DHA can influence fetal brain development. 相似文献

Myosin heavy chain (MHC) is a large, multidomain protein important for both cellular structure and contraction. To examine the functional role of two C-terminal domains, the end of the coiled-coil rod and the nonhelical tailpiece, we have generated constructs in which residues within these domains are removed or mutated, and examined their behavior in Caenorhabditis elegans striated muscle. Genetic tests demonstrate that MHC lacking only tailpiece residues is competent to support the timely onset of embryonic contractions, and therefore viability, in animals lacking full-length MHC. Antibody staining experiments show that this truncated molecule localizes as wild type in early stages of development, but may be defective in processes important for thick filament organization later in embryogenesis. Ultrastructural analysis reveals thick filaments of normal morphology in disorganized arrangement, as well as occasional abnormal assemblages. In contrast, molecules in which the four terminal residues of the coiled coil are absent or mutated fail to rescue animals lacking endogenous MHC. Loss of these four residues is associated with delayed protein localization and delayed contractile function during early embryogenesis. In this work, we explore the idea of using mathematical models to build design space for the primary drying portion of freeze-drying process. We start by defining design space for freeze-drying, followed by defining critical quality attributes and critical process parameters. Then using mathematical model, we build an insilico design space. Input parameters to the model (heat transfer coefficient and mass transfer resistance) were obtained from separate experimental runs. Two lyophilization runs are conducted to verify the model predictions. This confirmation of the model predictions with experimental results added to the confidence in the insilico design space. This simple step-by-step approach allowed us to minimize the number of experimental runs (preliminary runs to calculate heat transfer coefficient and mass transfer resistance plus two additional experimental runs to verify model predictions) required to define the design space. The established design space can then be used to understand the influence of critical process parameters on the critical quality attributes for all future cycles. 相似文献
