Goal, Scope and Background In contrast to inventory data of energy and transport processes, public inventory data of chemicals are rather scarce. Chemicals are important to consider in LCA, because they are used in the production of many, if not all, products. Moreover, they may cause considerable environmental impacts. For these reasons, it was one goal of the new ecoinvent database to provide LCI data on chemicals. In this paper, the methods and procedures used for establishing LCIs of chemicals in ecoinvent are presented.Methods Three different approaches are suggested for situations of differing data availability. First, in the case of good data availability, the general quality guidelines of ecoinvent can be followed. Second, a procedure is proposed for the translation of aggregated inventory data (cumulative LCI results) from industry into the ecoinvent format. This approach was used, if adequate unit process data was not available. Third, a procedure is put forward for estimating inventory data using stoichiometric equations from technical literature as a main information source. This latter method was used if no other information was available. The application of each of the three procedures is illustrated with the help of a case study.Results and Conclusion When sufficient information is available to follow the general guidelines of ecoinvent, the resulting dataset is characterized by a high degree of detail, and it is thus of high quality. For chemicals, however, the application of the standard procedure is possible in only a few cases. When using industrial data, the main drawback is the fact that those data are often available only as aggregated data, thus being out of tune with the quality guidelines of ecoinvent and its main aim, the harmonization of LCI data. As a third approach, the use of the stoichiometric reaction equation is used for the compilation of LCI datasets of chemicals. This approach represents an alternative to neglecting chemicals completely, but it contains a high risk to not consider important aspects of the life cycle of the respective substance.Outlook Further work in the area of chemicals should focus on an improvement of datasets, so far established by either of the two estimation procedures (APME method; estimation based on technical literature) described. Besides the improvement of already established inventories, the compilation of further harmonized inventories of specific types of chemicals (e.g. solvents) or of chemicals for new industrial sectors (e.g. electronics industry) are in discussion. 相似文献

The mechanical stimuli resulting from weight loading play an important role in mature bone remodeling. However, the effect of weight loading on the developmental process in young bones is less well understood. In this work, chicks were loaded with bags weighing 10% of their body weight during their rapid growth phase. The increased load reduced the length and diameter of the long bones. The average width of the bag-loaded group's growth plates was 75 +/- 4% that of the controls, and the plates showed increased mineralization. Northern blot analysis, in situ hybridization, and longitudinal cell counting of mechanically loaded growth plates showed narrowed expression zones of collagen types II and X compared with controls, with no differences between the relative proportions of those areas. An increase in osteopontin (OPN) expression with loading was most pronounced at the bone-cartilage interface. This extended expression overlapped with tartarate-resistant acid phosphatase staining and with the front of the mineralized matrix in the chondro-osseous junction. Moreover, weight loading enhanced the penetration of blood vessels into the growth plates and enhanced the gene expression of the matrix metalloproteinases MMP9 and MMP13 in those growth plates. On the basis of these results, we speculate that the mechanical strain on the chondrocytes in the growth plate causes overexpression of OPN, MMP9, and MMP13. The MMPs enable penetration of the blood vessels, which carry osteoclasts and osteoblasts. OPN recruits the osteoclasts to the cartilage-bone border, thus accelerating cartilage resorption in this zone and subsequent ossification which, in turn, contributes to the observed phenotype of narrower growth plate and shorter bones. 相似文献

Calcium transients in the cell nucleus evoked by synaptic activity in hippocampal neurons function as a signaling end point in synapse-to-nucleus communication. As an important regulator of neuronal gene expression, nuclear calcium is involved in the conversion of synaptic stimuli into functional and structural changes of neurons. Here we identify two synaptic organizers, Lrrtm1 and Lrrtm2, as targets of nuclear calcium signaling. Expression of both Lrrtm1 and Lrrtm2 increased in a synaptic NMDA receptor- and nuclear calcium-dependent manner in hippocampal neurons within 2–4 h after the induction of action potential bursting. Induction of Lrrtm1 and Lrrtm2 occurred independently of the need for new protein synthesis and required calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases and the nuclear calcium signaling target CREB-binding protein. Analysis of reporter gene constructs revealed a functional cAMP response element in the proximal promoter of Lrrtm2, indicating that at least Lrrtm2 is regulated by the classical nuclear Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IV-CREB/CREB-binding protein pathway. These results suggest that one mechanism by which nuclear calcium signaling controls neuronal network function is by regulating the expression of Lrrtm1 and Lrrtm2. 相似文献

The evaluation of mixing quality is an important factor for improving the geometry of stirred-tank reactors and impellers used in bioprocess engineering applications, such as the enzymatic hydrolysis of plant materials. Homogeneity depends on different factors, including the stirrer type and the reactor type (e.g., ratio of diameter/height, ratio of impeller tip diameter/reactor diameter) with or without baffles. This study compares two impellers for enzymatic hydrolysis of suspensions of biomass particles on a milliliter scale. Both impellers were derived from industrially relevant geometries, such as blade and grid stirrers, although the geometry of the second stirrer was slightly modified to an asymmetric shape. The stirrers were investigated with different stirrer–reactor configurations. This was done experimentally and with the aid of computational fluid dynamics. The flow field, mixing numbers, power characteristics and initial conversion rates of sugars were considered to compare the two stirrers. The simulated mixing numbers and power characteristics in baffled and unbaffled milliliter-scale reactors were found to be in good agreement with the measured mixing times and power consumption. The mixing numbers required to reach homogeneity were much higher for the symmetric impeller and remained at least twice as high as the mixing numbers required when using the asymmetric impeller. The highest initial sugar releases from milled corn stover suspensions were achieved with the asymmetric impeller shape. Regardless of the differences in the flow fields or mixing times, diverging enzymatic sugar releases could be confirmed for Newtonian media only. 相似文献

Raw meat sausage represents a unique ecological niche rich in nutrients for microbial consumption, making it particularly vulnerable to microbial spoilage. Starter cultures are applied to improve product stability and safety as well as flavour characteristics. However, the influence of starter cultures on microbial community assembly and succession throughout the fermentation process is largely unknown. In particular the effect on the fungal community has not yet been explored. We evaluate the microbiological status of four different raw meat sausages using high-throughput 16S rRNA gene and ITS2 gene sequencing. The objective was to study temporal changes of microbial composition during the fermentation process and to identify potential keystone species that play an important role within the microbial community. Our results suggest that fungi assigned to the species Debaryomyces hansenii and Alternaria alternata play a key role in microbial community dynamics during fermentation. In addition, bacteria related to the starter culture Lactobacillus sakei and the spoilage-associated genera Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas and Psychrobacter are central components of the microbial ecosystem in raw fermented sausages. Elucidating the exact role and interactions of these microorganisms has the potential to have direct impacts on the quality and safety of fermented foods. 相似文献

Representatives from agencies involved in natural resource management in the Murray‐Darling Basin gathered for a workshop in November 2010 to develop a vision for improved monitoring and reporting of riparian restoration projects. The resounding message from this workshop was that the effectiveness of riparian restoration depends on having sound, documented and agreed evidence on the ecological responses to restoration efforts. Improving our capacity to manage and restore riparian ecosystems is constrained by (i) a lack of ecological evidence on the effects of restoration efforts, and (ii) short‐termism in commitment to restoration efforts, in funding of monitoring and in expected time spans for ecosystem recovery. Restoration at the effective spatial scope will invariably require a long‐term commitment by researchers, funding agencies, management agencies and landholders. To address the knowledge gaps that constrain riparian restoration in the Basin, participants endorsed four major fields for future research: the importance of landscape context to restoration outcomes; spatio‐temporal scaling of restoration outcomes; functional effects of restoration efforts; and developing informative and effective indicators of restoration. To improve the monitoring and restoration of riparian zones throughout the Basin, participants advocated an integrated approach: a hierarchical adaptive management framework that incorporates long‐term ecological research. 相似文献
