j [0, L]. Recent ergodic theory results of Ruelle, Pianigiani, and Lasota and Yorke are used to derive a simple expression for the probability of survival of these systems. The extinction process is illustrated with two examples. One is the quadratic map, T(r, x) = rx(1 – x), and the second is a simple model for the growth of a cellular population. The survival statistics for chronic myelogenous leukemia patients are discussed in light of these extinction processes. Two other dynamical processes of biological importance, to which our results are applicable, are mentioned. 相似文献

The small, sub-ice copepod Jaschnovia brevis is rich in triacylglycerols, suggesting a feeding behaviour not constrained to the seasonal phytoplankton bloom. The copepod's triacylglycerol reserves contain: the diatom biomarkers 16:1n-7 (23.9%), 20:5n-3 (8.5%) and C16 PUFA (1.3%), the flagellate biomarkers 18:4n-3 (3.7%) and 22:6n-3 (3.3%), and the Calanus copepod biomarkers 20:1n-9 (7.7%) and 22:1n-11 (6.2%). Total lipid from particulates in the water column contained polar lipid (45.0%), wax esters (24.9%) and triacylglycerols (11.2%) as major components. The total lipids in the particulates were rich in 18:1n-9 (31.5%) and 16:0 (21.2%), and relatively rich in 18:0 (7.8%) and 18:2n-6 (9.2%). The triacylglycerols in the particulates contained 16:1n-7 (20.7%), C16 PUFA (4.1%), 18:4n-3 (1.9%), 20:5n-3 (3.6%), 22:6n-3 (1.9%), 20:1n-9 (5.2%) and 22:1n-11 (3.9%). The polar lipids in the particulates contained 16:1n-7 (17.3%), C16 PUFA (7.8%), 18:4n-3 (3.3%), 20:5n-3 (14.5%) and 22:6n-3 (9.6%). The fatty alcohols in the wax esters of the particulates were mainly 16:0 (11.3%), 20:1n-9 (21.1%) and 22:1n-11 (30.6%). The nature of the particulates, their possible origin in living and non-living material, and their role in the nutrition of J. brevis are discussed. 相似文献

Several bacterial genera express proteins that contain collagen-like regions, which are associated with variable (V) non-collagenous regions. The streptococcal collagen-like proteins, Scl1 and Scl2, of group A Streptococcus (GAS) are members of this 'prokaryotic collagen' family, and they too contain an amino-terminal non-collagenous V region of unknown function. Here, we use recombinant rScl constructs, derived from several Scl1 and Scl2 variants, and affinity chromatography to identify Scl ligands present in human plasma. First, we show that Scl1, but not Scl2, proteins from different GAS serotypes bind the same ligand identified as apolipoprotein B (ApoB100), which is a major component of the low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Scl1 binding to purified ApoB100 and LDL is specific and concentration-dependent. Furthermore, the non-collagenous V region of the Scl1 protein is responsible for LDL/ApoB100 binding because only those rScls, constructed by domain swapping, which contain the V region from Scl1 proteins, were able to bind to ApoB100 and LDL ligands, and this binding was inhibited by antibodies directed against the Scl1-V region. Electron microscopy images of Scl1-LDL complexes showed that the globular V domain of Scl1 interacted with spherical particles of LDL. Importantly, live M28-type GAS cells absorbed plasma LDL on the cell surface and this binding depended on the surface expression of the Scl1.28, but not Scl2.28, protein. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the non-collagenous globular domains of Scl1 and Scl2 evolved independently to form separate lineages, which differ in amino acid sequence, and these differences may account for the variations in binding patterns of Scl1 and Scl2 proteins. Locally enhanced sampling molecular dynamics study of the dioxygen transport in human cytoglobin 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Cytoglobin (Cyg)--a new member of the vertebrate heme globin family--is expressed in many tissues of the human body but its physiological role is still unclear. It may deliver oxygen under hypoxia, serve as a scavenger of reactive species or be involved in collagen synthesis. This protein is usually six-coordinated and binds oxygen by a displacement of the distal HisE7 imidazole. In this paper, the results of 60 ns molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of dioxygen diffusion inside Cyg matrix are discussed. In addition to a classical MD trajectory, an approximate Locally Enhanced Sampling (LES) method has been employed. Classical diffusion paths were carefully analyzed, five cavities in dynamical structures were determined and at least four distinct ligand exit paths were identified. The most probable exit/entry path is connected with a large tunnel present in Cyg. Several residues that are perhaps critical for kinetics of small gaseous diffusion were discovered. A comparison of gaseous ligand transport in Cyg and in the most studied heme protein myoglobin is presented. Implications of efficient oxygen transport found in Cyg to its possible physiological role are discussed. 相似文献

Rhodopsin, the prototypical G-protein-coupled receptor, which is densely packed in the disc membranes of rod outer segments, was proposed to function as a monomer. However, a growing body of evidence indicates dimerization and oligomerization of numerous G-protein-coupled receptors, and atomic force microscopy images revealed rows of rhodopsin dimers in murine disc membranes. In this work we demonstrate by electron microscopy of negatively stained samples, blue native- and sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, chemical crosslinking, and by proteolysis that native bovine rhodopsin exists mainly as dimers and higher oligomers. These results corroborate the recent findings from atomic force microscopy and molecular modeling on the supramolecular structure and packing arrangement of murine rhodopsin dimers. 相似文献

Environmental factors significantly influence the incidence and course of metabolic syndrome diseases such as diabetes and
obesity. The content of elements in rainwater is an indirect indicator of their presence in dust suspended in the air. In
this paper we present the relationships between the content of selected elements in rainwater and hospitalization frequencies
due to diabetes (E10–E13) and obesity (E66). It was assumed that the hospitalization frequency could be taken as a measure
of deterioration of the metabolic process in the course of diabetes and its complications. The observations concerned the
population of Opole Voivodeship, Poland (one million inhabitants), distributed in small communities of 44,000 to 151,000 inhabitants
during the years 2000–2002. In cases of diabetes E10–E13 for all subjects relevant correlation indicators were found for chromium
(r = 0.71), cadmium (r = 0.65), and lead (r = 0.66). Borderline relevance was seen for copper (r = 0.57) and zinc (r = 056). For diabetic men the statistically relevant correlations were chromium (r = 0.79), lead (r = 0.77), cadmium (r = 0.74), copper (r = 0.70), chloride (r = 0.69), zinc (r = 0.68), and iron (r = 0.64). For women the only relevant correlations were chromium (r = 0.62) and cadmium (r = 0.55). No significant correlations were found in obese individuals of both sexes. 相似文献
