Cytokine production in a model of wound healing: the appearance of MIP-1, MIP-2, cachectin/TNF and IL-1

Macrophages are essential for normal wound repair and many of their effects on healing wounds are likely to be mediated by the secretion of cytokines. This study examines the appearance of messenger RNA (mRNA) for cachectin/tumor necrosis factor (TNF), IL 1, and macrophage inflammatory proteins 1 and 2 (MIP-1 and MIP-2), as well as the mature peptides, in a model of wound healing using wound chambers. RNA for all four cytokines can be detected in wound inflammatory cells by polymerase chain reaction amplification throughout the first 7 days. Cachectin/TNF and IL 1 protein levels peaked on the first day after wound chamber implantation, and MIP-1 and MIP-2 were detected only on day 3. The data suggest that these cytokines participate in the early inflammatory response to wounding.     

An observation of an association between adaptive pigmentation and thermal tolerance of fish

Replidated experiments indicate an association between thermal tolerance of juvenile bluegill sunfish and adaptive pigmentation to background color. Bluegills exposed to black backgrounds were able to survive higher temperatures longer than those exposed to blond backgrounds, when water temperatures were raised at a rate of 0.1°C/h from 24 to 36°C. Plausible explanations are considered which involve heat radiation effectiveness (by the fish) related to the black body concept, and stress associated with adaptive pigmentation.     

MANAGEMENT OF EARLY PROSTATIC CARCINOMA

It is important to make a diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma as early as possible, because early treatment gives the best results whether radical prostatectomy is done or endocrine therapy used. Open perineal biopsy is the most accurate method of making a diagnosis. Perineal needle biopsy or the newer approach of transrectal needle biopsy is probably about 75 per cent accurate in making a diagnosis.Ten-year survival with conservative therapy, as determined in a review of a series of cases, was 50 per cent—about the same as that following radical prostatectomy; but the patients with prostatectomy are clinically free of malignant disease whereas the former are not. Radical prostatectomy is indicated in a few selected cases.The results from endocrine therapy begun immediately after diagnosis are significantly better than those from delayed treatment. Orchiectomy and estrogens promise a little longer survival than estrogens alone.
