Fluctuations of grass pollen content in the atmosphere of East Perugia and meteorological correlations (year 1989)

Summary Gramineae pollination from a pollen monitoring station located in the eastern suburb of Perugia and meteorological correlations are reported. The data refers to the year 1989. Grass pollen peak pollination was from May to July; in this period the influence of relative humidity and of temperature on pollen concentration was very high. Phenological observations, to identify the time of maximum stamen extension in the most common genera in the area, are also reported. During the period of investigation the counts of pollen grains over four-hour periods showed a regular diurnal rhythm with peaks of concentration in the four-hour period 16.00–20.00. Aerosporological data and meteorological data related to four-hour periods were correlated following different criteria.

Factors determining the reconstructive denaturation of proteins in sodium dodecyl sulfate solutions. Further circular dichroism studies on structural reorganization of seven proteins

The factors determining the onset and extent of reconstructive denaturation of proteins were considered by comparing circular dichroism (CD) data of seven proteins and previously published findings. The effects of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the conformation of the following proteins were tested: lysozyme, the mitogens fromPhytolacca americana (fractions Pa2 and Pa4), lectin fromWistaria floribunda, ovine lutropin, a Bence Jones protein, and histone H2B. While the helix content of lysozyme was raised by SDS slightly, in the Bence Jones protein andW. floribunda lectin it increased from near zero to about 25–30%. In histone H2B the helix content was raised by SDS even to about 48%. However, no clear indication of helix formation could be observed in the mitogens and lutropin, even at low pH or 2.0–2.5. The tertiary structure of the proteins was perturbed by SDS. It was concluded that the reorganization of secondary structure of the proteins was favored by the following factors: (1) presence of helicogenic amino acid sequences in the protein, (2) availability of positively charged sites of the basic amino acids for interactions with the dodecyl ion, (3) absence of a large surplus of negatively charged sites on the surface of protein, and (4) absence of extensive disulfide cross-linking within the macromolecule. Both hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions occur in reconstructive denaturation, and the newly formed helices are stabilized by hydrophobic shielding by the alkyl chains of the alkyl sulfate.     

D-glucosamine propanedithioacetal, an efficient chiral auxiliary in beta-lactam chemistry.

The synthesis of some monocyclic beta-lactams (monobactams) by the Staudinger reaction using D-glucosamine propanedithioacetal as chiral auxiliary is reported. The influence of several radicals at C3, C4, and C1' (sugar moiety) as well as other structural aspects are considered in relation to the antielastase activity.     

Cytochemical localization of alkaline phosphatase and ouabain-sensitive K+-dependent p-nitrophenylphosphatase activities in brain capillaries of the newt

The ultrastructural localization of alkaline phosphatase and K+-NPPase was investigated in brain capillaries of newt by a cytochemical study using whole brain perfusion. The alkaline phosphatase activity was present in both luminal and antiluminal membranes of the endothelial cells. By contrast, the K+-NPPase was located only in antiluminal membranes of the brain capillaries. This distinct enzymatic distribution suggested that the luminal and antiluminal membranes are functionally different. The role of alkaline phosphatase and K+-NPPase in the blood brain barrier is discussed.     

Sensing vascular distension in skeletal muscle by slow conducting afferent fibers: neurophysiological basis and implication for respiratory control.

This review examines the evidence that skeletal muscles can sense the status of the peripheral vascular network through group III and IV muscle afferent fibers. The anatomic and neurophysiological basis for such a mechanism is the following: 1) a significant portion of group III and IV afferent fibers have been found in the vicinity and the adventitia of the arterioles and the venules; 2) both of these groups of afferent fibers can respond to mechanical stimuli; 3) a population of group III and IV fibers stimulated during muscle contraction has been found to be inhibited to various degrees by arterial occlusion; and 4) more recently, direct evidence has been obtained showing that a part of the group IV muscle afferent fibers is stimulated by venous occlusion and by injection of vasodilatory agents. The physiological relevance of sensing local distension of the vascular network at venular level in the muscles is clearly different from that of the large veins, since the former can directly monitor the degree of tissue perfusion. The possible involvement of this sensing mechanism in respiratory control is discussed mainly in the light of the ventilatory effects of peripheral vascular occlusions during and after muscular exercise. It is proposed that this regulatory system anticipates the chemical changes that would occur in the arterial blood during increased metabolic load and attempts to minimize them by adjusting the level of ventilation to the level of muscle perfusion, thus matching the magnitudes of the peripheral and pulmonary gas exchange.     

Single pot sequential crystallization-distillation as a new purification procedure

A new purification procedure exploiting the simultaneous presence of a solid, liquid, and gas phase in a low surface area system is proposed and discussed. The assumptions of vanishingly low diffusion coefficients in the solid phase and that of the presence of a single “effective impurity” allow to plan the sequence of operations starting from the knowledge of just the melting and boiling points of the substance to be purified and of those of the “effective impurity”. Examples and results are presented.
