The carpal tunnel syndrome as a probable primary deficiency of vitamin B6 rather than a deficiency of a dependency state

The mean basal specific activities and the mean % deficiencies of the activity of the glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase of the erythrocytes were identical (n.s.) for a group of eight patients with a severe carpal tunnel syndrome and for a group of eight university students. There was no significant difference in the increases in the specific activities for the patients and the students at 4 concentrations of pyridoxal 5′-phosphate. The apparent K_m for the patients and the students was 95 μM and 61 μM (n.s.) respectively. It is concluded from these data in conjunction with previous findings that the carpal tunnel syndrome is a deficiency disease of vitamin B₆, which is probably primary rather than one of a dependency state.     

Adaptations for feeding on rock surfaces and sandy sediment by the fiddler crabs (Brachyura: Ocypodidae) Uca tetragonon(Herbst, 1790) and Uca vocans(Linnaeus, 1758)

Two species of fiddler crab, Uca tetragonon(Herbst, 1790) and Uca vocans(Linnaeus, 1758), which belong to the subgenus Gelasimus, dwell on rocky shores and muddy–sandy tidal flats, respectively, in Phuket Is., Thailand. We investigated their feeding ecology in relation to the morphology of their feeding organs: minor food-handling chelipeds and maxillipeds. U. tetragononfed chiefly on rocks covered by filamentous green algae. U. vocansfed on the emerged sand and in shallow water along the shoreline and in pools. While feeding, both crabs made sand pellets beneath their mouthparts and discarded them, indicating that they divided the matter scooped up with their minor chelipeds into edible and inedible fractions by using the maxillipeds in the water passing through their buccal cavity. The morphology of maxillipeds hardly differed between the two species, which means that both species are flotation-feeders. The morphology of their minor chelipeds, however, differed: the tips of the dactyl and pollex were flat in U. tetragononand pointed in U. vocans.When the minor cheliped was closed, U. tetragononhad a hemispherical space in the distal one-fourth of the gape, which was closed by the framing keratin layers and a few setae of the dactyl and pollex. On the other hand, U. vocanshad an ellipsoidal space in the distal half of the gape. We consider these morphological characters to be adaptations to the different feeding substrates for retaining more food-laden sediment. We discuss the role of the setae on the minor chelipeds on the basis of the morphological differences between populations of U. tetragononin Phuket Is. and East Africa where the crab inhabits muddy–sandy tidal flats.     

Formation of nodules on non-nodulating soybean T201 after treatment with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate

The formation of effective root nodules on a non-nodulating line (T201) of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.,) was induced by a treatment with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate (2,4-D). The induced nodules, inoculated with mixed Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains A1017 and IRj2101, had a normal internal structure, red in colour and the cells being filled with bacteroids. Externally, the induced nodules were of unusual shape, being paired or gourd-like in form and were attached to thickened roots. The nodules were capable of acetylene reduction (3.1–3.5 moles g^-1 fresh weight nodules h^-1), allowing the growth of plants with dark green leaves.     

CO2 is the first species formed upon CO oxidation by CO dehydrogenase from Pseudomonas carboxydovorans

The active species of CO₂, i.e. CO₂ or HCO ₃ ^- , formed in the CO dehydrogenase reaction was determined using the pure enzyme from the carboxydotrophic bacterium Pseudomonas carboxydovorans. Employing an assay system similar to that used to test for carbonic anhydrase, data were obtained which are quite compatible with those expected if CO₂ is the first species formed. In addition, carbonic anhydrase activity was not detected in P. carboxydovorans.     

Temperature-Induced Change of Chlorophyll a Forms in Phosphatidylcholine Liposomes

Absorption spectra of chlorophyll a in phosphatidylcholine liposomesat different temperatures were analyzed by a curve fitting method.The absorption spectrum was found to be composed of one majorband with a peak at 670–671 nm and minor bands with peaksat 650–652, 662–663 and 684–686 nm. Upon coolingbelow the phase transition temperature of the lipid, the componentabsorbing at 670–671 nm increased significantly at theexpense of the component absorbing at 662–663 nm. Isolation of chicken anemia agent with MDCC-MSB1 cells from chickens in the field

An attempt was made to isolate chicken anemia agent (CAA) from chickens suffering from anemia in the field by using MDCC - MSB1 , which was an established cell line derived from Marek's disease lymphoma. When 99 chickens of 15 flocks were examined, CAA was isolated from 58 chickens of 12 flocks. The rate of CAA isolation with MDCC - MSB1 cells was almost the same as that determined by an in vivo method by chick inoculation. It was shown that CAA was more closely concerned with anemic diseases of chickens in the field than fowl adenoviruses.     

Genetic studies of the ribosomal proteins in Escherichia. coli. II. Altered 30s ribosomal protein component specific to spectinomycin resistant mutants

Summary Spectinomycin resistant (spc ^r) mutants were obtained by treating the cells of E. coli K12, W3637 with nitrosoguanidine. The compositions of ribosomal proteins were analyzed for six out of eleven such spc ^r-mutants with chromatography on a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) column. The 30s ribosomal subunit from all of the spc ^r-mutants was found to contain the altered 30-4 protein component, while no difference was detected in 50s ribosomal proteins between spc ^r and spc ^s bacteria.Abbreviations used CMC carboxymethyl cellulose - str streptomycin - spc spectinomycin
