Aquatic snails from south western Zimbabwe belonging to theBulinus trunscatus/tropicus complex vary widely in shell formsuggesting that more than one taxon could be present. This possibilitywas investigated by making observations on snail samples from13 populations from the Plumtree area, in respect of allozymevariation (5 polymorphic loci), shell morphology (9 variables),copulatory organ and chromosome number. Comparative data wereobtained from snails from north western Zimbabwe identifieddefinitely as B. tropicus. Analysis of the genetic structurerevealed a high degree of polymorphism (P) ranging from 0.29–0.80among populations from Plumtree and expected heterozygosity(He) from 0.02–0.22. No enzymatic diagnostic loci werefound which could differentiate the different morphs or populationsand discriminant function analysis on the morphological datashowed an overlap of morphs among populations. Snails analyzedfor chromosome number were all diploid (2n = 36). Snails exposedto Schistosoma haematobium mira-cidia were all refractory. Thisinformation supports the view of a single species, B. tropicus,which is differentiated due to migration barriers and whereenvironmental variables might be implicated in the morphometricdivergence. Extrapleural pneumothorax is a valuable method of treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. However, it is applicable in a relatively few cases which meet stringent criteria. Moreover, it entails the absolute necessity for continuity of care following operation. Within these limitations, the procedure will control tuberculosis in a small but significant number of patients.  相似文献

In this, a preliminary report, the advantages and disadvantages of upper lobe lobectomy and concomitant thoracoplasty in tuberculosis have been summarized. There has been no undue increase in the operative hazard, there have been no complications, and the immediate results have been entirely satisfactory.Twenty-six patients were subjected to a combined operation (17 upper lobectomy-thoracoplasty and nine pneumonectomy-thoracoplasty) with one postoperative death. Indications for primary lobectomy have been discussed. The technique of resection and concomitant thoracoplasty has been briefly described.  相似文献

The absence of information about how abundance varies across species' ranges restricts most modeling and monitoring of climate change responses to the range edge. We examine spatial variation in abundance across the northeastern range of North American beaver ( Castor canadensis ), evaluate the extent to which climate and nonclimate variables explain this variation, and use a species–climate envelope model that includes spatial variation in abundance to predict beaver abundance responses to projected climate change. The density of beaver colonies across Québec follows a roughly logistic pattern, with high but variable density across the southern portion of the province, a sharp decline in density at about 49°N, and a long tail of low density extending as far as 58°N. Several climate and nonclimate variables were strong predictors of variation in beaver density, but 97% of the variation explained by nonclimate variables could be accounted for by climate variables. Because of the peak and tail density pattern, beaver climate sensitivity (change in density per unit change in climate) was greatest in the interior and lowest at the edge of the range. Combining our best density–climate models with projections from general circulation models (GCM) predicts a relatively modest expansion of the species' northern range limit by 2055, but density increases in the range interior that far exceed those at the range edge. Thus, some of the most dramatic responses to climate change may be occurring in the core of species' ranges, far away from the edge-of-the-range focus of most current modeling and monitoring efforts.  相似文献

The effect of colonization of tissue-cultured strawberry ( Fragaria × ananassa Duch. cv. Kent) plantlets in vitro by the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) Glomus intraradices on plantlet response to poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-8000-induced water stress was investigated. The plantlets were inoculated axenically and co-cultured with the AMF for 4 wk, then transferred to 15% PEG-8000 solutions for 4, 8 and 12 h. Relative water content, water potential, osmotic potential, leaf conductance for water vapour diffusion and photosynthetic efficiency as estimated by chlorophyll a fluorescence were all affected by the PEG treatment and its duration but not by the presence of the intraradical phase of the AMF. However, distinct differences in PEG-induced changes in amino acid content were observed between nonmycorrhizal and mycorrhizal plantlets. In the latter, the treatment with PEG caused a substantial decrease in asparagine levels in leaves that was accompanied by a marked increase in asparagine concentration in roots. The opposite was observed in nonmycorrhizal plantlets. Furthermore, concentrations of aspartic acid, serine, threonine, amino- N -butyric acid, alanine and starch increased in roots of mycorrhizal and decreased in nonmycorrhizal plantlets. Our results suggest the presence of a mobile pool of asparagine that can be translocated from leaves to roots or vice versa in response to PEG-induced water stress, depending on the mycorrhizal status of the plantlets. These opposite patterns suggest different strategies of mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal plantlets to water stress, which seem to involve different adjustments in nitrogen and carbon metabolism.  相似文献
