Sodium Content of Community Water Supplies in California

The amount of sodium ion in water used for ingestion may be critical in effective use of a low sodium dietary regimen. Waters containing not over 20 mg of sodium per liter are provided for in the sodium restricted diets set forth by the American Heart Association. For diets containing more than 500 mg of sodium a day, waters of greater sodium content may be used if proper dietary adjustments are made.While assessment of the long-term average sodium content of a community water supply is difficult, the determined values for sodium lend to classification within range categories. The larger community water supplies in California are presented within several range categories of sodium content.The more commonly used water softeners add sodium to water. The sodium-restricted patient should be cautioned against their use. Similar consideration should probably be given to water supplies of retirement communities where the potential for disorders requiring sodium restriction is greater than in the general population.     

Phospholipase C activation in rat pituitary adenoma (GH) cells

The presence of the pertussis toxin (PTX) insensitive GTP-binding proteins (G-proteins) G_q and/or G₁₁ has been demonstrated in three different prolactin (PRL) and growth hormone (GH) producing pituitary adenoma cell lines. Immunoblocking of their coupling to hormone receptors indicates that G_q and/or G₁₁ confer throliberin (TRH) responsive phospholipase C (PL-C) activity in these cells. The contention was substantiated by immunoprecipitation analyses snowing that anti G_q/11-sera coprecipitated PL-C activity. In essence, only G_q/11 (but neither G_i2, G_i3 nor G_o) seems to mediate the TRH-sensitive PL-C activity, while G_o may be coupled to a basal or constitutive PL-C activity. Immunoblocking studies imply that the B-complex also, to some extent, may stimulate GH₃ pituitary cell line PL-C activity. Finally, the steady state levels of G_q/11 mRNA and protein were downregulated upon long term exposure of the GH3 cells to TRH (but not to vasoactive intestinal peptide = VIP).     

Studies on an Indian polydesmoid millipede Streptogonopus phipsoni Life cycle and swarming behaviour of the larvae

The adults of Streptogonopus phipsoni (Pocock), an Indian polydesmoid millipede, emerge from the soil at the onset of the monsoon and mate. Eggs are laid in the soil and the adults die. The larvae leave the soil at stadium III and, apart from moulting periods, remain on the surface until the end of the monsoon. The larvae are aggregated in swarms, usually consisting of several hundred individuals. They are active on open ground, including metalled roads, during daylight, but usually spend the night in an inactive state under cover of stones or vegetation. If a swarm is disturbed, the individuals scatter but later reaggregate.
Laboratory experiments show that the larvae are sensitive to light even though they lack eyes, and if given a choice spend more time in the light than the dark. Just before and after moulting however they spend more time in the dark than in the light.
Experiments were carried out on the reactions of the larvae to aquatic suspensions of benzaldeyde, since this substance is related to components of the exudate of the repugnatorial glands; strong concentrations (10^-1) repelled the larvae, whilst weak concentrations (10^-6) attracted them. It is suggested that swarms may be dispersed or reaggregated by the effects of variations in concentration of components of the exudates. The benefits to the larvae which may result from swarming are discussed.     

Activated T lymphocytes within human solid tumors

Summary The majority of lymphocytes separated from tumor cell suspensions were T cells. Conjugates of T lymphocytes and tumor cells were often seen. Variable numbers of T cells exhibited signs of activation such as the ability to form stable E rosettes and attachment to normal and malignant cells (a phenomenon designated natural attachment: NA). A proportion of T cells activated in vitro by allogeneic stimulation regularly exhibit these properties.
