Abstract. Questions: How do physical microsite conditions of microsites affect germination and seedling survival in different successional stages? Do different species germinate in similar microsites in a given successional stage? Location: Coleman Glacier foreland, Mount Baker, Washington State, USA. Methods: Two methods were used to characterize safe sites. 1. Grids of 300 10 cm × 10 cm plots were located in four different age classes on the foreland. 2.105 pairs of plots, with and without seedlings of Abies amabilis, were located in each age class. For each plot we identified all seedlings and all individuals < 1 m tall. Microsite characteristics such as topography and presence of rocks or woody debris were noted for each plot. Microsite characteristics were compared between plots with and without each species. In addition we examined the effect of distance from seed sources on the presence of Alnus viridis seeds and seedlings in a newly disturbed area. Results: In early successional sites, seedlings of several species were positively associated with depressions and presence of rocks, and negatively associated with ridges. Patterns were generally consistent among species. In later succession, seedlings were not significantly associated with any microsite characteristics. For Alnus viridis, seed density decreased with distance from seed sources but seedling density did not. Conclusions: Because of harsh conditions in early succession, physical microsites are important, and most species have similar microsite requirements. In later succession, physical microsites characteristics are not as important and are more variable. Microsites appear to be more important than seed rain in controlling the distribution of Alnus viridis in early succession. 相似文献

We have analysed the daily egg production (EPR) and hatchingsuccess rates of the calanoid copepods Calanoides carinatusand Rhincalanus nasutus as a function of nano- and microplanktonconcentration and composition in the northern Benguela upwellingsystem off Namibia. Food concentration explained 55% (R. nasutus)to 62% (C. carinatus) of the EPR variability. We found no relationbetween the residuals of the food concentrationEPR regressionand the percentage of the different taxonomic components ofthe nano- and microplankton. Nor was there a relation with theproportion of the diatom Skeletonema costatum that dominatedthe major blooms or with the number of nano- and microplanktonspecies. We conclude that food quality differences could notbe attributed to the relative composition of microplanktonicparticles of the different groups (i.e. taxonomic composition). 相似文献

Vanadium salts influence the activities of a number of mammalian enzymes in vitro but the mechanisms by which low concentrations
of vanadium ameliorate the effects of diabetes in vivo remain poorly understood. The hypothesis that vanadium compounds act
by inhibiting protein tyrosine phosphatases has attracted most support. The studies described here further evaluate the possibility
that vanadyl sulfate trihydrate (VS) can also inhibit 3′,5′-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) dependent protein kinase
(PKA). Using conventional assay conditions, VS inhibited PKA only at high concentrations (IC50>400 μM); however, PKA inhibition was seen at dramatically lower concentrations of VS (IC50<10 μM) when sequestration of vanadyl ions was minimized. Vanadyl appears to be the effective PKA inhibitor because sodium
orthovanadate did not inhibit PKA and inhibition by vanadyl was abolished by potential chelators such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic
acid or glycyl peptides. PKA inhibition by vanadyl appears to be mixed rather than strictly competitive or uncompetitive and
may replicate the inhibitory effects of high concentrations of Mg2+. The effect of vanadyl on PKA provides a possible explanation for the effects of vanadium salts on fat tissue lipolysis and
perhaps on other aspects of energy metabolism that are controlled by cAMP-dependent mechanisms. Considering the high degree
of conservation of the active sites of protein kinases, vanadyl may also influence other members of this large protein family.

5-HT (serotonin) is a ubiquitous neurotransmitter that produces ciliary beating in gastropods when applied topically, but ciliary beating caused by gastropod serotonergic neurons has been described in only three neuron pairs. We extend these results to the North American Lymnaea stagnalis appressa, which is a different species from the European Lymnaea stagnalis. We describe a non-serotonergic neuron pair, PeV1, which accelerates pedal sole mucociliary transport and a serotonergic neuron pair, PeD7, which slows mucociliary transport. We compare and discuss development and identified neurons in L. s. appressa and in L. stagnalis, which have homologs to L. s. appressa PeD7 and PeV1 neurons. In addition to PeD7 and PeV1 neurons, we test neurons immunoreactive to Tritonia pedal peptide antibodies with negative results for mucociliary transport. In characterizing PeD7 and PeV1 neurons, we find that PeV1 does not excite PeD7. In semi-intact preparations, a strong increase in PeD7 neuron activity occurs during tactile stimulation, but V1 neurons are inhibited during tactile stimulation. Following tactile stimulation, PeV1 neurons show strong activity. This suggests a distinct difference in function of the two neuron pairs, which both have their axons overlying pedal sole ciliary cells. Application of 5-HT to the pedal sole initiates mucociliary transport in 1.4–1.9 s with a time course similar to that seen when stimulating a PeV1 neuron. This result appears to be through a 5-HT1A-like receptor on the pedal sole. We describe a possible external source of 5-HT on the pedal sole from 5-HT immunoreactive granules that are released with mucus. 相似文献

Thompson, H.S. & Fotso, R. 2000. Conservation of two threatened species: Picathartes. Ostrich 71 (1 & 2): 154–156. In this paper, we describe the threats faced by Picathartes populations around two urban centres in Sierra Leone and Cameroon and outline some of the possible lines of conservation action. These populations are small and on the brink of local extinction unless immediate action is taken now. It is postulated that proper management of the unique situation of these “urban Picathartes populations” could contribute to local eco-tourism revenues, whilst ensuring the long-term survival of the birds. Some of our recent results on the breeding biology and ecology of the two species form the background against which conservation issues are discussed. 相似文献

Carnosine was first discovered in skeletal muscle, where its concentration is higher than in any other tissue. This, along with an understanding of its role as an intracellular pH buffer has made it a dipeptide of interest for the athletic population with its potential to increase high-intensity exercise performance and capacity. The ability to increase muscle carnosine levels via β-alanine supplementation has spawned a new area of research into its use as an ergogenic aid. The current evidence base relating to the use of β-alanine as an ergogenic aid is reviewed here, alongside our current thoughts on the potential mechanism(s) to support any effect. There is also some emerging evidence for a potential therapeutic role for carnosine, with this potential being, at least theoretically, shown in ageing, neurological diseases, diabetes and cancer. The currently available evidence to support this potential therapeutic role is also reviewed here, as are the potential limitations of its use for these purposes, which mainly focusses on issues surrounding carnosine bioavailability. 相似文献

Abstract A bulk Lennard-Jones fluid was simulated using the grand canonical Monte Carlo method. Three different sampling methods were used in the transition matrix, namely the Metropolis, Barker and a third novel method. While it can be shown that the Metropolis method will give the most accurate ensemble averages in the limit of an infinitely long run, the new method termed “Modified Barker Sampling” (MBS), is shown to be superior for the runs of practical length for the particular system studied. 相似文献

Semicontinuous registration of the normal airborne bacteria flora during a one-year period was carried out at an inland and a coastal station near Stockholm. The sampling apparatus were FOA-slitsamplers that work on the impaction principle with a moving solid agar medium as collecting surface. At both localities meteorological variables were also recorded. The concentration of airborne bacteria ranged for the inland station from 0-500 bacteria/m3 with an average of 51 bacteria/m3 and for the coastal station from 0-250 bacteria/m3 with an average of 16 bacteria/m3. The diurnal pattern of variation varies with the time of year but there is a statistical difference between the day-average and night-average for the inland station but not for the coastal station. In the material studied the relative humidity followed by the wind velocity were factors of importance for the variation in the number of viable airborne bacteria. 相似文献

Cellular heterogeneity plays a pivotal role in a variety of functional processes in vivo including carcinogenesis. However, our knowledge about cell-to-cell diversity and how differences in individual cells manifest in alterations at the population level remains very limited mainly due to the lack of appropriate tools enabling studies at the single-cell level. We present a study on changes in cellular heterogeneity in the context of pre-malignant progression in response to hypoxic stress. Utilizing pre-malignant progression of Barrett’s esophagus (BE) as a disease model system we studied molecular mechanisms underlying the progression from metaplastic to dysplastic (pre-cancerous) stage. We used newly developed methods enabling measurements of cell-to-cell differences in copy numbers of mitochondrial DNA, expression levels of a set of mitochondrial and nuclear genes involved in hypoxia response pathways, and mitochondrial membrane potential. In contrast to bulk cell studies reported earlier, our study shows significant differences between metaplastic and dysplastic BE cells in both average values and single-cell parameter distributions of mtDNA copy numbers, mitochondrial function, and mRNA expression levels of studied genes. Based on single-cell data analysis, we propose that mitochondria may be one of the key factors in pre-malignant progression in BE. 相似文献
