A wide number of pesticides, including highly persistent organochlorine compounds, such as lindane (γ-Hexachlorocyclohexane),
have deteriorative effect on fauna and flora by inducing oxidative stress. Lindane induces cell damage by producing free radicals
and reactive oxygen species. Quercetin, a dietary flavonoid, is ubiquitous in fruits and vegetables and plays an important
role in human health by virtue of its antioxidant function. In this study the flavonoid quercetin was used to investigate
its antioxidative effect against lindane induced oxidative stress in rats. The level of lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione
(GSH) were analysed in addition to the antioxidant enzymes such as catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide
dismutase (SOD) and glutathione-s-transferase (GST) activities in the liver and kidney tissue. Levels of hepatic marker enzymes
in serum like Aspartate transaminase (AST), Alanine transaminase (ALT), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Lactate dehydrogenase
(LDH) and renal markers like serum creatinine and serum urea were estimated. Administration of Lindane induced histopathological
alterations and increased levels of serum hepatic and renal markers and malondialdehyde (MDA) with a significant decrease
in GSH content and CAT, SOD, GPx and GST activities. Cotreatment of quercetin along with lindane significantly decreased the
lindane induced alteration in histology, serum hepatic and renal markers and MDA and also improved the cellular antioxidant
status. The results show that Quercetin ameliorates Lindane induced oxidative stress in liver and kidney. The quercetin exhibited
chemopreventive effect when administered along with lindane. 相似文献

Background
Short rotation coppice willow is a potential lignocellulosic feedstock in the United Kingdom and elsewhere; however, research on optimising willow specifically for bioethanol production has started developing only recently. We have used the feedstock Salix viminalis × Salix schwerinii cultivar 'Olof' in a three-month pot experiment with the aim of modifying cell wall composition and structure within the stem to the benefit of bioethanol production. Trees were treated for 26 or 43 days with tension wood induction and/or with an application of the cellulose synthesis inhibitor 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile that is specific to secondary cell walls. Reaction wood (tension and opposite wood) was isolated from material that had received the 43-day tension wood induction treatment.Results
Glucan content, lignin content and enzymatically released glucose were assayed. All measured parameters were altered without loss of total stem biomass yield, indicating that enzymatic saccharification yield can be enhanced by both alterations to cell wall structure and alterations to absolute contents of either glucan or lignin.Conclusions
Final glucose yields can be improved by the induction of tension wood without a detrimental impact on biomass yield. The increase in glucan accessibility to cell wall degrading enzymes could help contribute to reducing the energy and environmental impacts of the lignocellulosic bioethanol production process. 相似文献5.

This study combined morphological and morphometric information on egg clutches, egg capsules and paralarvae of two sympatric coastal octopuses from New Zealand waters, Octopus huttoni and Pinnoctopus cordiformis, to provide species-specific traits to identify their early life stages obtained from field surveys. Eggs of O. huttoni (2.5 mm length; 1 mm width) were entwined with one another forming strings that ranged from 11 to 25.8 mm in length. Eggs of P. cordiformis (6.4 mm length; 1.5 mm width) were significantly bigger than those of O. huttoni and were grouped in small clusters of about seven eggs. Paralarvae O. huttoni and P. cordiformis differed in hatching size (1.4 mm versus 3.1 mm mantle length), number of suckers per arm (four versus eight), number of lamellae per outer demibranch (five versus ten) and arrangements of chromatophores in the body surface (29 to 59 versus 91 to 179), respectively. The morphological traits described in hatchlings from the laboratory allowed comparisons with field-collected paralarvae, suggesting that such characters were reliable species-specific patterns to enable a consistent differentiation between the early life stages of these two sympatric species, even in the absence of the brooding female. 相似文献

Dracunculiasis, popularly known as Guinea worm disease, has been eradicated from Tamil Nadu, India, and there have been no
indigenous cases reported since 1981. This report describes a female bonnet monkey with dracunculiasis. She presented with
fever and a blister in left hind limb. The blister ruptured on exposure to water and a 7-cm-long worm was extruded. The worm
died before it could be histologically examined. The diagnosis was based on the typical clinical course, which was pathognomonic
of dracunculiasis. Review of literature did not reveal any previous report of dracunculiasis in South Indian bonnet monkeys
(Macaca radiata). This paper raises the question whether wild monkeys might act as reservoirs of human infection and cause resurgence of
the disease in South India.
Animal experiments were approved by the ethical committee of our institute and animal maintenance was according to the recommendations

The histological effect on and stress response of post juvenile Clarias gariepinus exposed to Qua Iboe crude oil and rig wash were investigated. Fish weighing 60–90 g and measuring 16–18 cm were exposed for 7–28 days to 8.00 ml?1 Qua Iboe crude oil and 0.0018 ml–1 rig wash, both being 0.1 of the 96 hr LC50. Blood samples of C. gariepinus were collected every seven days and evaluated for stress by measuring cortisol concentration. The gills and liver were studied and scored for Gill Alteration Index (GAI) and Hepatic Alteration Index (HAI), respectively. There was an increase in cortisol level up to the 7th and 14th day among the group exposed to Qua Iboe crude oil, with a decrease on the 21st and 28th day. The rig wash group increased in cortisol level up to the 7th day and decreased slightly on the 14th day, after which the trend became irregular. The toxic effects of the Qua Iboe crude oil and rig wash were time dependent, as shown by the histopathological alteration index (HAI) of gill and liver. After 28 days of exposure, the gills had irreparable damage due to high frequency of cellular necrosis and degeneration, whereas the liver had from moderate to severe damage due to the high frequency of cellular degeneration and inflammation. Qua Iboe crude oil and rig wash are both toxic to C. gariepinus, therefore their indiscriminate discharge to the environment must be discouraged. 相似文献

These ligands (L) show a bidentate behavior, forming octahedral ruthenium complexes. The title complexes were subjected to in-vivo anticancer activity tests against a transplantable murine tumor cell line, Ehrlich's Ascitic Carcinoma (EAC) and in-vitro antibacterial activity against several Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial strains. [Ru(bpy)2(ihqs)]Cl2 and [Ru(bpy)2 (hc)]Cl2 (where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, ihqs = 7-iodo-8hydroxy quinoline-5-sulphonic acid and hc = 3-hydroxy coumarin) showed promising antitumor activity. Treatment with these complexes prolonged the life span of EAC bearing mice as well as decreased their tumor volume and viable ascitic cell count.
