Oxidised glutathione reductase activity in mouse epidermis: TPA induced change and its modulation by vitamin A

Single cutaneous application of 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate (TPA) increased epidermal oxidised glutathione reductase activity in adult mouse by almost 100%. Pretreatment of animals with vitamin A for a week resulted in 75% inhibition of TPA induced change in the enzyme activity which remained unaffected in skin treated with vitamin A alone. This biochemical change in skin induced by TPA and modulated by vitamin A has been discussed in relation to epidermal hyperplasia.     

A new tubulin-binding protein

A new brain protein is described which forms an insoluble complex with tubulin, with concomitant stoichiometric hydrolysis of GTP. The complex contains a maximum of one tubulin-binding protein (MW 52,500) per two tubulin dimers. The tubulin-binding protein (TBP) does not compete with colchicine, but in the presence of microtubule-associated proteins tubulin appeared less accessible to it. Proteins such as TBP might sequester tubulin and thereby function either to inhibit indiscriminate polymerization, or to promote ordered nucleation by maintaining high local concentrations.     

Two oligosaccharides from Marsdenia roylei

Phytochemical analysis of dried twigs of Marsdenia roylei (family Asclepiadaceae) has resulted in the isolation of a trisaccharide, maryal, and a diglycoside, rolinose. Their structures were determined as O-beta-D-oleandropyranosyl-(1-->4)-O-beta-D-digitoxopyranosyl++ +-(1-->4)-D- cymaral and ethyl O-beta-D-oleandropyranosyl-(1-->4)-O-3-O-methyl-6-deoxy-beta-D- allopyranoside, respectively, by chemical degradation and spectroscopic methods.     

The Photoperiodic Entrainment and Induction of Reproductive Rhythms in Male Blackheaded Buntings (Emberiza Melanocephala)

Groups of photosensitive, unstimulated or stimulated, male blackheaded buntings were subjected to photoregimes of 15 hr of green light of three intensities and 9 hr of dark per day. In some groups green light was interrupted with 90 min of bright fluorescent light at different times in the subjective day. While gonads did not develop or regressed in some groups, birds in others behaved as if exposed to long daylengths. The results besides suggesting the involvement of endogenous circadian rhythm during initiation and maintenance of gonadal growth indicate that the reproductive rhythms are entrained and induced by environmental photoperiod.     

Starch-degrading enzymes of two species ofFusarium

Starch supported production of maximum α-amylases (dextrinizing and saccharifying) byFusarium oxysporum andF. scirpi. Addition of gibberellic acid resulted in an increased production of α-amylase. Presence of glucose depressed the enzyme production. pH 4.5 and 4.0 was found to be optimum for the dextrinizing enzyme secreted by both species. The temperature of 25 and 40 °C was optimum for the dextrinizing enzyme secreted byF. oxysporum andF. scirpi, respectively. Saccharifying enzymes of both species showed their optimum at pH 6.9. The optimum temperature for the activity of the saccharifying enzyme was 30 and 40 °C, respectively.
