Effect of lake acidity and morphometry on the distribution of aquatic birds in southern Quebec 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
More than half the lakes in the deciduous and boreal forest regions of southern Quebec harbour at least one aquatic bird species during the nesting period. Although the number of nesting pairs per lake is generally small, those pairs are most commonly seen on lakes with a surface area of more than 15 ha, a winter pH lower than that of normal rain (i.e. < 5.6), an irregular shore configuration marked by abundant riparian vegetation, and islands.
In a correspondence analysis, the first axis, representing lake acidity, explains 68% of the total variance. The common goldeneye Bucephala clangula , which is frequently seen on the most acidic lakes, and the American black duck Anas rubripes , which tends to avoid acidic lakes, show the largest contributions to that axis. The second axis describes an altitude/surface area gradient and brings the cumulative percentage of explained total variance to 94%; the great blue heron Ardea herodias and the common loon Gavia immer primarily use large, low-altitude lakes, whereas the ringnecked duck Aythya collaris and the American black duck are often found on the smaller, higher-altitude lakes. Those results are discussed as they relate to the feeding requirements of the various species of bird and the biology of their main prey. The ecological segregation of the three waterfowl species is attributed to interspecific competition. 相似文献

Background
Tenascins are a family of glycoproteins found primarily in the extracellular matrix of embryos where they help to regulate cell proliferation, adhesion and migration. Lipopolysaccharide, a component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, is a potent immunostimulatory molecule which activates the innate host defense system. Over the past few years progress has been made in identifying the molecular mechanisms of host recognition of lipid A (a component of lipopolysaccharide), the identification of the genes required for Escherichia coli lipid A biosynthesis, and the role of lipid A acylation when viable bacteria are presented to host cells. Recent data indicate that bacteria can regulate this molecule in response to different host microenvironments. The increasing use of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) in diagnostic reagents necessitates efficient and cost-effective mAb production methods. In blood banks, one of the most routinely used reagents is the anti-human IgG reagent used for the detection of non-agglutinating antibodies. Here we report the production of a functional, purified anti-human IgG, through the expression of its encoding genes in perennial transgenic alfalfa. Transgenic plants expressing the light- and heavy-chain encoding mRNAs were obtained, and plants from crosses were found to express fully assembled C5-1. The purification procedure yielded mainly the H2L2 form with specificity and affinity identical to those of hybridoma-derived C5-1. The ability to accumulate the antibody was maintained both in parental F1 lines during repeated harvesting and in clonal material; the antibody was stable in the drying hay as in extracts made in pure water. Also, plant and hybridoma-derived C5-1 had similar in vivo half-lives in mice. These results indicate that plant C5-1 could be used in a diagnostic reagent as effectively as hybridoma-derived C5-1, and demonstrates the usefulness of perennial systems for the cost-effective, stable, and reliable production of large amounts of mAbs. 相似文献

The oral and intestinal host tissues both carry a heavy microbial burden. Although commensal bacteria contribute to healthy intestinal tissue structure and function, their contribution to oral health is poorly understood. A crucial component of periodontal health is the recruitment of neutrophils to periodontal tissue. To elucidate this process, gingival tissues of specific‐pathogen‐free and germ‐free wild‐type mice and CXCR2KO and MyD88KO mice were examined for quantitative analysis of neutrophils and CXCR2 chemoattractants (CXCL1, CXCL2). We show that the recruitment ofneutrophils to the gingival tissue does not require commensal bacterial colonization but is entirely dependent on CXCR2 expression. Strikingly, however, commensal bacteria selectively upregulate the expression of CXCL2, but not CXCL1, in a MyD88‐dependent way that correlates with increased neutrophil recruitment as compared with germ‐free conditions. This is the first evidence that the selective use of chemokine receptor ligands contributes to neutrophil homing to healthy periodontal tissue. 相似文献

We have demonstrated previously that tetra-acylated LPS derived from the oral bacterium, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and penta-acylated msbB LPS derived from a mutant strain of Escherichia coli can antagonize the ability of canonical hexa-acylated E. coli LPS to signal through the TLR4 signaling complex in human endothelial cells. Activation of the TLR4 signaling complex requires the coordinated function of LPS binding protein (LBP), CD14, MD-2, and TLR4. To elucidate the specific molecular components that mediate antagonism, we developed a recombinant human TLR4 signaling complex that displayed efficient LPS-dependent antagonism of E. coli LPS in HEK293 cells. Notably, changes in the expression levels of TLR4 in HEK293 cells modulated the efficiency of antagonism by P. gingivalis LPS. Both soluble (s) CD14 and membrane (m) CD14 supported efficient P. gingivalis LPS-dependent and msbB LPS-dependent antagonism of E. coli LPS in the recombinant TLR4 system. When cells expressing TLR4, MD-2, and mCD14 were exposed to LPS in the absence of serum-derived LBP, efficient LPS-dependent antagonism of E. coli LPS was still observed indicating that LPS-dependent antagonism occurs downstream of LBP. Experiments using immunoprecipitates of sCD14 or sMD-2 that had been pre-exposed to agonist and antagonist indicated that LPS-dependent antagonism occurs partially at sCD14 and potently at sMD-2. This study provides novel evidence that expression levels of TLR4 can modulate the efficiency of LPS-dependent antagonism. However, MD-2 represents the principal molecular component that tetra-acylated P. gingivalis LPS and penta-acylated msbB LPS use to antagonize hexa-acylated E. coli LPS at the TLR4 signaling complex. 相似文献

The relationship between intracellular lysosomal rupture and cell death caused by silica was studied in P388d(1) macrophages. After 3 h of exposure to 150 μg silica in medium containing 1.8 mM Ca(2+), 60 percent of the cells were unable to exclude trypan blue. In the absence of extracellular Ca(2+), however, all of the cells remained viable. Phagocytosis of silica particles occurred to the same extent in the presence or absence of Ca(2+). The percentage of P388D(1) cells killed by silica depended on the dose and the concentration of Ca(2+) in the medium. Intracellular lyosomal rupture after exposure to silica was measured by acridine orange fluorescence or histochemical assay of horseradish peroxidase. With either assay, 60 percent of the cells exposed to 150 μg silica for 3 h in the presence of Ca(2+) showed intracellular lysosomal rupture, was not associated with measureable degradation of total DNA, RNA, protein, or phospholipids or accelerated turnover of exogenous horseradish peroxidase. Pretreatment with promethazine (20 μg/ml) protected 80 percent of P388D(1) macrophages against silica toxicity although lysosomal rupture occurred in 60-70 percent of the cells. Intracellular lysosomal rupture was prevented in 80 percent of the cells by pretreatment with indomethacin (5 x 10(-5)M), yet 40-50 percent of the cells died after 3 h of exposure to 150 μg silica in 1.8 mM extracellular Ca(2+). The calcium ionophore A23187 also caused intracellular lysosomal rupture in 90-98 percent of the cells treated for 1 h in either the presence or absence of extracellular Ca(2+). With the addition of 1.8 mM Ca(2+), 80 percent of the cells was killed after 3 h, whereas all of the cells remained viable in the absence of Ca(2+). These experiments suggest that intracellular lysosomal rupture is not causally related to the cell death cause by silica or . Cell death is dependent on extracellular Ca(2+) and may be mediated by an influx of these ions across the plasma membrane permeability barrier damaged directly by exposure to these toxins. A23187相似文献

Parasites can play an important role in the dynamics of host populations, but empirical evidence remains sparse. We investigated
the role of bot fly (Cuterebra spp.) parasitism in red-backed voles (Myodes gapperi) by first assessing the impacts of the parasite on the probability of vole survival under stressful conditions as well as
on the reproductive activity of females. We then identified the main factors driving both the individual risk of infection
and the abundance of bot flies inside red-backed voles. Finally, we evaluated the impacts of bot fly prevalence on the growth
rate of vole populations between mid-July and mid-August. Thirty-six populations of red-backed voles were sampled in the boreal
forest of Québec, Canada. The presence and the abundance of parasites in voles, two host life history traits (sex and body
condition), three indices of habitat complexity (tree basal area, sapling basal area, coarse woody debris volume), and vole
abundance were considered in models evaluating the effects of bot flies on host populations. We found that the probability
of survival of red-backed voles in live traps decreased with bot fly infection. Both the individual risk of infection and
the abundance of bot flies in red-backed voles were driven mainly by vole abundance rather than by the two host life history
traits or the three variables of habitat complexity. Parasitism had population consequences: bot fly prevalence was linked
to a decrease in short-term growth rate of vole populations over the summer. We found that bot flies have the potential to
reduce survival of red-backed voles, an effect that may apply to large portions of populations.
