In 2001, Urbani and Palmer published a review of the epidemiological situation of helminthiases in the countries of the Western Pacific Region of the World Health Organization indicating the control needs in the region. Six years after this inspiring article, large-scale preventive chemotherapy for the control of helminthiasis has scaled up dramatically in the region. This paper analyzes the most recent published and unpublished country information on large-scale preventive chemotherapy and summarizes the progress made since 2000. Almost 39 million treatments were provided in 2006 in the region for the control of helminthiasis: nearly 14 million for the control of lymphatic filariasis, more than 22 million for the control of soil-transmitted helminthiasis, and over 2 million for the control of schistosomiasis. In general, control of these helminthiases is progressing well in the Mekong countries and Pacific Islands. In China, despite harboring the majority of the helminth infections of the region, the control activities have not reached the level of coverage of countries with much more limited financial resources. The control of food-borne trematodes is still limited, but pilot activities have been initiated in China, Lao People's Democratic Republic, and Vietnam. 相似文献

The secretion of angiogenic factors by vascular endothelial cells is one of the key mechanisms of angiogenesis. Here we report on the isolation of a new potent angiogenic factor, diuridine tetraphosphate (Up4U) from the secretome of human endothelial cells. The angiogenic effect of the endothelial secretome was partially reduced after incubation with alkaline phosphatase and abolished in the presence of suramin. In one fraction, purified to homogeneity by reversed phase and affinity chromatography, Up4U was identified by MALDI-LIFT-fragment-mass-spectrometry, enzymatic cleavage analysis and retention-time comparison. Beside a strong angiogenic effect on the yolk sac membrane and the developing rat embryo itself, Up4U increased the proliferation rate of endothelial cells and, in the presence of PDGF, of vascular smooth muscle cells. Up4U stimulated the migration rate of endothelial cells via P2Y2-receptors, increased the ability of endothelial cells to form capillary-like tubes and acts as a potent inducer of sprouting angiogenesis originating from gel-embedded EC spheroids. Endothelial cells released Up4U after stimulation with shear stress. Mean total plasma Up4U concentrations of healthy subjects (N = 6) were sufficient to induce angiogenic and proliferative effects (1.34±0.26 nmol L-1). The complete genomes of living organisms have provided much information on their phylogenetic relationships. Similarly, the complete genomes of chloroplasts have helped to resolve the evolution of this organelle in photosynthetic eukaryotes. In this paper we propose an alternative method of phylogenetic analysis using compositional statistics for all protein sequences from complete genomes. This new method is conceptually simpler than and computationally as fast as the one proposed by Qi et al. (2004b) and Chu et al. (2004). The same data sets used in Qi et al. (2004b) and Chu et al. (2004) are analyzed using the new method. Our distance-based phylogenic tree of the 109 prokaryotes and eukaryotes agrees with the biologists tree of life based on 16S rRNA comparison in a predominant majority of basic branching and most lower taxa. Our phylogenetic analysis also shows that the chloroplast genomes are separated to two major clades corresponding to chlorophytes s.l. and rhodophytes s.l. The evolutionary relationships between three major components of Darwinian fitness, development rate, growth rate and preadult
survival, were estimated using a comparison of 55 distinct populations ofDrosophila melanogaster variously selected for age-specific fertility, environmental-stress tolerance and accelerated development. Development rate
displayed a strong net negative evolutionary correlation with weight at eclosion across all selection treatments, consistent
with the existence of a size-versus-time tradeoff between these characters. However, within the data set, the magnitude of
the evolutionary correlation depended upon the particular selection treatments contrasted. A previously proposed tradeoff
between preadult viability and growth rate was apparent only under weak selection for juvenile fitness components. Direct
selection for rapid development led to sharp reductions in both growth rates and viability. These data add to the mounting
results from experimental evolution that illustrate the sensitivity of evolutionary correlations to (i) genotype-by-environment
(G X E) interaction, (ii) complex functional-trait interactions, and (iii) character definition. Instability, disappearance
and reversal of patterns of genetic covariation often occur over short evolutionary time frames and as the direct product
of selection, rather than some stochastic process. We suggest that the functional architecture of fitness is a rapidly evolving
matrix with reticulate properties, a matrix that we understand only poorly. 相似文献

Palmitic acid is a major saturated fatty acid in soybean oil, and consumption of saturated fat is linked to a risk of coronary diseases. Development of soybean (Glycine max) cultivars with reduced palmitic acid content is an important goal of soybean breeding. The FATB1a gene was previously found to be responsible for reduced palmitic acid in the soybean line N87-2122-4. The objective of this research was to characterize the FATB1a gene identified in N87-2122-4 and develop a breeder-friendly, functional marker to facilitate marker-assisted selection and improve breeding efficiency for reduced palmitic soybeans. With the availability of soybean genetic maps, reference genome, and gene annotations, an approximate 254 kb deleted genomic region, including the FATB1a gene, was identified. Based on the gene deletion information, we developed a TaqMan marker and tested it with a segregating F 2 population that consisted of 140 individual plants derived from ‘Cook’ × N87-2122-4. The marker performed well and accounted for 57 % of the phenotypic variation. The marker was also validated using a panel of 121 diverse soybean lines with known fatty acid profiles. The result indicated that the marker can be used effectively in marker-assisted breeding for reduced palmitic acid in soybean. 相似文献

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi and Typhimurium are closely related serovars. However, S. Typhi, a human-specific pathogen, has 5% of genes as pseudogenes, far more than S. Typhimurium, which only has 1%. One of these pseudogenes corresponds to sopD2, which in S. Typhimurium encodes an effector protein involved in Salmonella-containing vacuole biogenesis in human epithelial cell lines, which is needed for full virulence of the pathogen. We investigated whether S. Typhi trans-complemented with the functional sopD2 gene from S. Typhimurium (sopD2(STM) ) would reduce the invasion of human epithelial cell lines. Our results showed that the presence of sopD2(STM) in S. Typhi significantly modified the bacterial ability to alter cellular permeability and decrease the CFUs recovered after cell invasion of human epithelial cell line. These results add to mounting evidence that pseudogenes contribute to S. Typhi adaptation to humans. 相似文献

Background
Evidences have increasingly indicated that lncRNAs (long non-coding RNAs) are deeply involved in important biological regulation processes leading to various human complex diseases. Experimental investigations of these disease associated lncRNAs are slow with high costs. Computational methods to infer potential associations between lncRNAs and diseases have become an effective prior-pinpointing approach to the experimental verification.Results
In this study, we develop a novel method for the prediction of lncRNA-disease associations using bi-random walks on a network merging the similarities of lncRNAs and diseases. Particularly, this method applies a Laplacian technique to normalize the lncRNA similarity matrix and the disease similarity matrix before the construction of the lncRNA similarity network and disease similarity network. The two networks are then connected via existing lncRNA-disease associations. After that, bi-random walks are applied on the heterogeneous network to predict the potential associations between the lncRNAs and the diseases. Experimental results demonstrate that the performance of our method is highly comparable to or better than the state-of-the-art methods for predicting lncRNA-disease associations. Our analyses on three cancer data sets (breast cancer, lung cancer, and liver cancer) also indicate the usefulness of our method in practical applications.Conclusions
Our proposed method, including the construction of the lncRNA similarity network and disease similarity network and the bi-random walks algorithm on the heterogeneous network, could be used for prediction of potential associations between the lncRNAs and the diseases.9.

The structure and reactivity of a covalently linked catechol-ortho-benzoquinone (hemiquinone) is studied by UV-Vis and IR absorption spectroscopy. Nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy of the hemiquinone reveals the formation of bi-radical state consisting of two semiquinone units.
