Western Atlantic coral reefs were differentially affected bya mass bleaching (discoloration) event in 1987. We periodicallyassessed the "appearance" of zooxanthellate organisms betweenDecember 1987 and June 1988 at nine conspicuously affected sitesin the Bahamas, Florida, St. Croix, and Venezuela, using a standardizedpoint-count technique. Three to four months after the localinitiation of the event, the "bleached" state was still presentin one to three of the most abundant reef coral taxa and ina few of the less common species (n = 5 sites). "Recovery" occurredsomewhat faster at shallower depths, at least in the Bahamasand Florida. Scleractinian corals which were "prolonged bleachers"had foliaceous or massive, rather than branching, morphologies."Bleached" points disappeared from the point counts after $6to $8 months. Long-term field data on spatial and temporal variability inthe dynamics of zooxanthellate organisms would help us to understandthe ecological consequences of bleaching. Techniques were developed for testing umbelliferous species against naturally-occurring populations of carrot fly in the field. The most efficient technique involved exposure of plants to either first or second generations of the insect in the field, followed by caging of infested plots and trapping of emerged flies in water in yellow water dishes. In a series of field experiments between 1981 and 1989 inclusive, a total of 132 umbelliferous species and sub-species were tested against carrot fly. Seventy-eight of these proved to be new hosts, 27 were confirmed as hosts and 27 failed to support any carrot flies. Six non-umbelliferous plant species failed to be colonised by carrot fly. Sources of variability in investigations of the host range of insects are discussed. 相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Carcinonemertes errans is a nemertean worm, the juvenilesof which are found as epibionts on the Dungeness crab, Cancermagister, in close association with the arthrodial membranesof the crabs. The juvenile nemerteans appear to have no meansof taking in particulate food but survive for many months onthe surface of the host. We show that the juvenile C. erransare capable of removing amino acids from dilute solution insea water, that the water near the arthrodial membranes wherethe worms are found contains high concentrations of primaryamines, and that there is a low resistance pathway for low molecularweight amino acids across the arthrodial membrane examined invitro. 相似文献

Pure samples of the antheridiogen of Anemia phyllitidis (AAn) were tested for their ability to affect the growth of dwarf corn (d5) and lettuce seedlings, and to influence α-amylase production by barley half-seeds. Stimulation of dwarf corn growth and barley amylase production was, on a molar basis, from 1/2 to 1/250 that given by GA3. In lettuce, AAn had a synergistic effect with low levels of GA3; alone, AAn was inhibitory or ineffective. Therefore, in addition to having a close chemical resemblance to gibberellin, AAn induces similar, but not identical physiological responses in flowering plants as well as ferns. 相似文献

Sphagnum mosses are major components of peat bogs but populations of many species are under threat due to habitat fragmentation resulting from the cutting of peat for fuel. We have used an intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR)‐based cloning method to develop nine polymorphic nuclear microsatellites for the peat moss species Sphagnum capillifolium. Between three and seven alleles per locus were detected in a sample of 48 haploid gametophytes and levels of gene diversity ranged from 0.5391 to 0.7960. These represent the first microsatellite markers developed for this important genus and most also exhibited cross‐species amplification across a range of common Sphagnum species. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Monoclonal antibodies that react with the circumsporozoite protein of the avian malaria Plasmodium gallinaceum sporozoites also reacted with circumsporozoite protein of the rodent malaria Plasmodium berghei. Two types of reactivity were identified: 1) two monoclonal antibodies reacted with P. berghei sporozoite protein by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, Western blot and indirect immunofluorescence antibody, 2) six other monoclonal antibodies reacted with P. berghei sporozoites by ELISA and Western blot only. We studied whether these differences could be explained by reactivity in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with different P. berghei circumsporozoite peptides. Although all P. gallinaceum monoclonal antibodies reacted with the P. berghei repeats, the first group reacted with a conserved peptide sequence, N1, whereas the second group did not. These results suggest that circumsporozoite proteins from P. gallinaceum and P. berghei share common epitopes. the biological significance of our finding is not yet clear. Indeed, the cross-reactive monoclonal antibodies giving a positive indirect immunofluorescence antibody with the P. berghei sporozoites only caused a borderline effect on the living P. berghei parasites in vitro as measured by inhibition of sporozoite infectivity. 相似文献
