Complexity Results for Mixed-Model Assembly Lines with Approximation Algorithms for the Single Station Case

Mixed-model assembly lines are becoming increasingly interesting as the use of just-in-time principles in manufacturing continues to expand. This paper presents, for the first time, complexity results for the underlying problem of product sequencing. It is shown that the problem is intractable for both the single station and the multiple station case. Nevertheless, efficient 1.5-approximation algorithms are developed for the early- and late-start models associated with the former case. Empirical results demonstrate that these algorithms perform extremely well in practice.     

Ontogenesis of TRH mRNA in the rat pancreas

The rapid changes in TRH levels in the rat pancreas during the neonatal period make this organ an interesting model for the study of the regulation of TRH biosynthesis. Pancreatic RNAs were isolated by the guanidinium thiocyanate method and layered onto CsCl cushion. Northern blot preparations were hybridized with 32P labeled TRH cDNA probe. Pancreatic TRH mRNA was first detected in 19-day old fetuses and reached the highest level on day 0, then decreased, being barely detectable 14 days after birth. The neonatal injection of streptozotocin induced a dramatic drop of TRH mRNA levels 24 hours later. This result suggests that the peculiar evolution of TRH level in pancreas is partly due to the evolution of the expression of the TRH gene.     

Cat heart acetylcholine: Unilateral vagotomy studies with pyrolysis-mass fragmentography

The distribution of acetylcholine (ACh) in the cat heart was investigated by pyrolysis-gas chromatography (PGC) and pyrolysis-mass fragmentography (PMF) techniques. The hearts were dissected into various regions and homogenized in the presence of butyrycholine (or propionylcholine) as internal standard. The choline esters were isolated and analyzed by PGC or by PMF (at m/e 58). A pattern of distribution for ACh was found to be the same as I have previously described (1,2). Some cats were subjected to either a right or a left unilateral cervical vagotomy 4 weeks before removal and analysis of heart tissue. Hearts from unilateral (right or left) vagotomized cats did not differ from controls in the ACh content of any heart area examined. These results are consistent with the idea that intact parasympathetic neurons may compensate for the denervation following unilateral vagotomy.     

Isolation and characterization of Pediococcus halophilus from salted anchovies (Engraulis anchoita)

The presence of bacteria in salted anchovies during and at the end of the curing process was investigated. Attempts to isolate bacteria under aerobic or anaerobic conditions led to the isolation of only bacteria of the genus Pediococcus which were identified as Pediococcus halophilus. The isolates correspond to a rather heterogeneous group in which some of the members differ in some biochemical tests from the types described in the literature.     

Direct interaction of tricyclic antidepressants with opiate binding sites in the bovine adrenal medulla

This note reports the interaction of three currently used tricyclic antidepressant drugs (clomipramine, imipramine and amitriptyline) with delta, mu and kappa opioid binding sites in the bovine adrenal medulla. Clomipramine was the only drug interacting with delta and mu sites. On the contrary, all three drugs showed a significant interactions with subtypes of the kappa binding site. Clomipramine was the most active on the kappa 2 and kappa 3 subtypes while amitriptyline showed the highest interaction with the kappa 1 subtype. On the contrary the tricyclic cyproheptadine did not present any interaction with opioid binding sites in our system. This interaction between tricyclic antidepressants and opioid binding sites might be the origin of their analgesic action.
