Aims
The objectives of this study were to evaluate (1) the fertilizer potential of bone char, (2) the effects of wood biochar on plant-available phosphorus (P), and (3) the role of root-mycorrhizae-biochar interactions in plant P acquisition from a P-fixing soil. Methods
Incubation and pot experiments were conducted with a P-fixing soil and maize with or without root hairs and arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) inoculation. Olsen-, resin-P and plant P accumulation were used to estimate P availability from bone char, co-pyrolyzed bone char-wood biochar, and separate bone char and wood biochar additions produced at 60, 350 and 750 °C, and Triple Superphosphate (TSP).Results
Maize inoculated with AM showed similar P accumulation when fertilized with either 750 °C bone char or TSP. Pyrolyzing bone did not increase extractable P in soil in comparison to unpyrolyzed bone, apart from a 67 % increase in resin-extractable P after additions of bone char pyrolyzed at 350 °C. Despite greater Olsen-P extractability, co-pyrolysis of bone with wood reduced maize P uptake. Wood biochars reduced resin-P from bone char by 14–26 %, whereas oven-dried wood increased resin-P by 23 %.Conclusions
Bone char is an effective P fertilizer, especially if root-AM interactions are simultaneously considered. Biochar influences plant access to soil P and requires careful management to improve P availability.2.

ABSTRACT: Back groundReference intervals (RIs) are ranges of upper and lower limits of a given analyte which are used for a laboratory test to determine whether a disease is present or absent or to know if the patient is at risk for future disease states. In Ethiopia, a country with highly diversified population groups and geographical sites, there are no established RIs to metabolic analytes including the liver function test (LFT) analytes for the pediatric population though it has been known that liver function assessment in this population is vital as a result of varied vulnerability to both endogenous and xenobiotic substances. METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted in Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) and Teklehaymanot Health Center (THC) from November 2010 to April 2011. 117 cord blood (from newborns) and venous blood samples (from infants) were collected and analyzed using HumaStar 300. All pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical aspects were thoroughly controlled. A robust, CLSI/ IFCC recommended, method was used for the determination of upper and lower end points covering 95% of the reference values of each analyte with respective 90% CIs using MedCalc(R) software. RESULTS: Combined RIs for newborns and infants were established for albumin, AST, ALP, direct bilirubin and total bilirubin to be 3.88-5.82 g/dl, 16.1-55.4U/l, 130-831U/l, <0.41 mg/dl and <1.37 mg/dl respectively. But, separated RIs were indicated for ALT and GGT as 1.2-23.1U/l and 6.94-24.8U/l ALT; and 30.6-160.7U/L and 10--28.2U/l GGT for newborns and infants respectively. Some maternal and infantile factors were identified to affect the values of analytes. CONCLUSION: Almost all analytes were different from previously reported values for other target population of similar age group, kit insert values and adult values. So, interpretation of values of these analytes in newborns and infants of Ethiopian population sounds better to be performed by using such RIs taking the effect of some maternal and infantile factors in to account. 相似文献

Plant species and genotypes within the same species may differ in phosphorus efficiency. The objective of this research was to study phosphorus efficiency of cabbage (Brassica oleraceae L.), carrot (Daucus carota L.), and potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) and to quantify the contribution of morphological root characteristics to P uptake of the plant species. An experiment was conducted in a glasshouse with six P levels: 0, 12, 27, 73, 124 and 234 mg P kg–1 soil, and with six replications. Cabbage attained 80% of its maximum yield already at the level of no P supply, whereas carrot and potato reached only 4 and 16% of their highest yields respectively at this level of P supply. This indicated that cabbage was P-efficient compared to carrot and potato. Root/shoot ratio (cm root g–1 shoot d. m.) increased in the order of cabbage < carrot < potato, and was enhanced at lower P levels. Root hair length was not affected by P level, and averaged 0.22, 0.03 and 0.18 mm for cabbage, carrot, and potato, respectively. Predicting P uptake by a mechanistic simulation model revealed that root hairs contributed about 50% to the total P uptake of cabbage and potato, but only 0.3% to that of carrot. The relationship between the observed P uptake and the predicted P uptake of the plants revealed that model parameters explained nearly 4/5th of the total P uptake of carrot and potato, but only 2/5th of that of cabbage. This showed that the P uptake of cabbage was strongly under-predicted, whereas that of carrot and potato was predicted well. Therefore, it was hypothesised that cabbage may have the ability to mobilise and take up soil P additionally by other root mechanisms such as exudation of organic acids. 相似文献

Nigussie. A.T. 2000. Ethiopian Wildlife and Natural History Society, the Important Bird Areas Programme and other projects. Ostrich 71 (1 & 2): 181–182. The BirdLife International Partner in Ethiopia is the Ethiopian Wildlife and Natural History Society (EWNHS), established in 1966. The aims of the society are mentioned and projects run by the EWNHS, within the framework of the ‘Conservation for Survival’ agenda, are described. These projects include the Important Bird Areas Project, the Environmental Education Support Publications, School's Environmental Education Project, Plant Locally and Nurture Trees project and The Indoor/Outdoors Activities project. 相似文献

Nigussie, A.T. & Dellelegn, Y. 2000. Developing national conservation programmes through the IBA process. Ostrich 71(1 & 2): 162–163. The history of the Ethiopian Wildlife and Naural History Society (EWNHS) is presented and the background to involvement with BirdLife International and incorporation in the African network as a BirdLife Partner is described. The IBA intitiative has formed the core of the EWNHS BirdLife programme and two years of funding from the European Union has faciliated the launch of a full-scale national IBA inventory and conservation programme. The current state of the analysis of Ethiopia's important sites is presented together with the plan for further site survey work and for action to conserve sites though advocacy and the developmant of local and national capacity to monitor and manage sites. 相似文献
