Opto-electrical processes in a conducting polymer-bacteriorhodopsin system

In this report, we highlight the opto-electrical processes at a conducting polymer-bacteriorhodopsin (bR) interface in presence of a voltage bias. Oriented bR on a conducting polymer substrate forms a unique hybrid system where the oxidation state of the polymer controls the optically activated proton gradient in the bR side. The internal conversion of the intermediate deprotonated M-state and the proton transfer/transport of bR at the interface can be controlled by the electrostatic environment and leads to interesting device features in this process.     

First total synthesis of prasinic acid and its anticancer activity

The first total synthesis of prasinic acid is being reported along with its biological evaluation. The ten step synthesis involved readily available and cheap starting materials and can easily be transposed to large scale manufacturing. The crucial steps of the synthesis included the formation of two different aromatic units (7 and 9) and their coupling reaction. The synthetic prasinic acid exhibited moderate antitumor activity (IC₅₀ 4.3–9.1 μM) in different lines of cancer cells.     

Probiotic lactic acid bacterium from <Emphasis Type=Italic>kanjika</Emphasis> as a potential source of vitamin B<Subscript>12</Subscript>: evidence from LC-MS,immunological and microbiological techniques

Vitamin B₁₂ was produced by probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum in submerged fermentation (96 h) with successive anaerobic and aerobic phases of 48 h each to give 13 ng vitamin B₁₂/g dry biomass. Sodium cyanide-mediated cell lysis, followed by benzyl alcohol/chloroform/water extraction, improved the release of intracellular vitamin B₁₂ for analysis. The presence of the K⁺ adduct of cyanocobalamin (m/z of 1394) was established using electron spray ionization–mass spectra; growth of a mutant of Escherichia coli in the presence of cyanocobalamin ascertained its bioavailability.     

Production of ergot alkaloids by Aspergillus fumigatus (Fresenius)

Summary Nutritional requirements for the production of ergot alkaloids were studied with Aspergillus fumigatus under submerged conditions of fermentation, in a chemically defined medium. Glucose in combination with mannitol and triammonium citrate were found to be the best sources of carbon and nitrogen for the production of alkaloids. Carbon to nitrogen ratio of 4.16 : 1 was found optimum. Phosphate at elevated concentration inhibited alkaloid production.     

Paracrine effects of oocyte secreted factors and stem cell factor on porcine granulosa and theca cells <Emphasis Type="Italic">in vitro</Emphasis>

Oocyte control of granulosa and theca cell function may be mediated by several growth factors via a local feedback loop(s) between these cell types. This study examined both the role of oocyte-secreted factors on granulosa and thecal cells, cultured independently and in co-culture, and the effect of stem cell factor (SCF); a granulosa cell derived peptide that appears to have multiple roles in follicle development. Granulosa and theca cells were isolated from 2–6 mm healthy follicles of mature porcine ovaries and cultured under serum-free conditions, supplemented with: 100 ng/ml LR3 IGF-1, 10 ng/ml insulin, 100 ng/ml testosterone, 0–10 ng/ml SCF, 1 ng/ml FSH (granulosa), 0.01 ng/ml LH (theca) or 1 ng/ml FSH and 0.01 ng/ml LH (co-culture) and with/without oocyte conditioned medium (OCM) or 5 oocytes. Cells were cultured in 96 well plates for 144 h, after which viable cell numbers were determined. Medium was replaced every 48 h and spent medium analysed for steroids.
