Shallow-water vegetated estuarine habitats, notably seagrass, mangrove and saltmarsh, are known to be important habitats for
many species of small or juvenile fish in temperate Australia. However, the movement of fish between these habitats is poorly
understood, and yet critical to the management of the estuarine fisheries resource. We installed a series of buoyant pop nets
in adjacent stands of seagrass, mangrove and saltmarsh in order to determine how relative abundance of fishes varied through
lunar cycles. Nets were released in all habitats at the peak of the monthly spring tide for 12 months, and in the seagrass
habitat at the peak of the neap tide also. The assemblage of fish in each habitat differed during the spring tides. The seagrass
assemblage differed between spring and neap tide, with the neap tide assemblage showing greater abundances of fish, particularly
those species which visited the adjacent habitats when inundated during spring tides. The result supports the hypothesis that
fish move from the seagrass to the adjacent mangrove and saltmarsh during spring tides, taking advantage of high abundances
of zooplankton, and use seagrass as a refuge during lower tides. The restoration and preservation of mangrove and saltmarsh
utility as fish habitat may in some situations be linked to the proximity of available seagrass. 相似文献
Some P-450 systems, notably aromatase and 14-demethylase catalyse not only the hydroxylate reaction but also the oxidation of an alcohol into a carbonyl compound as well as a C---C bond cleavage process. All these reactions occur at the same active site. A somewhat analogous situation is noted with 17-hydroxylase-17,20-lyase that participates in hydroxylation as well as C---C bond cleavage process. It is argued that all three types of reaction catalyzed by these enzymes may be viewed as variations on a common theme. In P-450 dependent hydroxylation the initially formed FeIII---O---O. species is converted into FeIII---O---OH and the heterolysis of the oxygen—oxygen bond of the latter then gives the oxo-derivative for which a number of canonical structures are possible; for example FeV = O ↔ (+.)FeIV = O ↔ FeIV---O.. One of these, FeIV---O. behaves like an alkoxyl radical and participates in hydrogen abstraction from C---H bond to produce FeIV---OH and carbon radical. The latter is then quenched by the delivery of hydroxyl radical from FeIV---OH. The latter species may thus be regarded as a carrier of hydroxyl radical. We have proposed that the C---C bond cleavage reaction occurs through the participation of the FeIII---O---OH species that is trapped by the electrophilic property of the carbonyl compound giving a peroxide adduct that fragments to produce an acyl—carbon cleavage. Phenol, p-cresol, and volatile fatty acids (VFA; acetic, propionic, isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric, and valeric acids) were used as odor indicators of swine waste. Aeration of the waste allowed the indigenous microorganisms to grow and degrade these malodorous substances. The time required for degradation of these substances varied according to the waste used, and it was not necessarily related to their concentrations. Using a minimal medium which contained one of the malodorous compounds as sole carbon source, we have selected from swine waste microorganisms that can grow in the medium. The majority of these microorganisms were able to degrade the same substrate when inoculated in sterilized swine waste but with an efficiency varying from one strain to the other. None of these strains was able to degrade all malodorous substances studied. Within 6 days of incubation these selected strains degraded the following: Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, phenol and all VFA; Alcaligenes faecalis, p-cresol and all VFA; Corynebacterium glutamicum and Micrococcus sp., phenol, p-cresol, and acetic and propionic acids; Arthrobacter flavescens, all VFA. On a laboratory scale, the massive inoculation of swine waste with C. glutamicum or Micrococcus sp. accelerated degradation of the malodorous substances. However, this effect was not observed with all of the various swine wastes tested. These results suggest that an efficient deodorization process of various swine wastes could be developed at the farm level based on the aerobic indigenous microflora of each waste. 相似文献
Summary The effect of methanol on the ability of several strains of Aspergillus to produce citric acid from galactose has been investigated. In the absence of methanol, very little production (less than 1 g/l) was observed. In the presence of methanol (final concentration 1% v/v), however, citric acid production and yeilds were increased considerably. Strong relationships were observed between citric acid production and the activities of the enzymes 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase and pyruvate carboxylase in cell-free extracts. During citric acid production, in the presence of methanol, the activity of 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase was low and that of pyruvate carboxylase high. In the absence of methanol, where little citric acid was produced, the reverse was true. It is suggested that the presence of methanol may increase the permeability of the cell to citrate, and the cell responds to the diminished intracellular level by increasing production via repression of 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase. 相似文献
1. Evidence is presented that cyclic AMP inhibits the incorporation of l-[4,5-(3)H]leucine into protein in a cell-free system from rat liver. This inhibition occurs after aminoacyl-tRNA formation. 2. Microsomal fractions, isolated after the incubation of postmitochondrial supernatant with cyclic AMP and ATP, show a diminished ability to synthesize protein. Both cyclic AMP and ATP are required for this effect. 3. A possible physiological role for the anti-anabolic action of cyclic AMP is discussed in terms of the control of gluconeogenesis. 相似文献
A quick, simple, and reliable method for the extraction of DNA from grapevine species, hybrids, andAmpelopsis brevipedunculata (Vitaceae) has been developed. This method, based on that of Doyle and Doyle (1990), is a CTBA-based extraction procedure
modified by the use of NaCl to remove polysaccharides and PVP to eliminate polyphenols during DNA purification. The method
has also been used successfully for extraction of total DNA from other fruit species such as apple (Malus domestica), apricot (Prunus armeniaca), cherry (Prunus avium), peach (Prunus persica), plum (Prunus domestica), and raspberry (Rubus idaeus). DNA yield from this procedure is high (up to 1 mg/g of leaf tissue). DNA is completely digestible with restriction endonucleases
and amplifiable in the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), indicating freedom from common contaminating compounds. 相似文献
Now is the time to refocus efforts in urban research and design. A changing climate and extreme weather events are presenting unique challenges to urban systems around the world. These challenges illuminate the social barriers that accompany disruptive events such as resource inequities and injustices. In this perspective, we provide three research priorities for just and sustainable urban systems that help to address these matters. The three research priorities are: (1) social equity and justice, (2) circularity, and (3) digital twins. Conceptual context and future research directions are provided for each. For social equity and justice, the future directions are mandatory equity analysis and inclusionary practices, understanding and reconciling historical injustices, and intentional integration with diverse community stakeholders. For circularity applications, they are better metrics for integration, more robust evaluation frameworks, and dynamic modeling at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Future directions for digital twins include developing principles to reduce complexity, integrating model and system components, and reducing barriers to data access. These research priorities are core to meeting several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (i.e., 1—No Poverty, 8—Decent Work and Economic Growth, 10—Reduced Inequalities, and 11—Sustainable Cities and Communities). Useful social and technical matters are discussed throughout, where we highlight the importance of prioritizing localized research efforts, provide guidance for community-engaged research and co-development practices, and explain how these priorities interact to align with the evolving field of industrial ecology. 相似文献
Ensuring food security for the rapidly increasing population and changing climatic scenarios are requisites for
exploiting the genetic divergence of food crops. A study was undertaken to sort out an early maturing chickpea
variety for fitting easily between rice-rice cropping systems in the Eastern Indo-Gangetic Plain of Bangladesh. The
trial was comprised of eight elite lines of chickpea and executed at various localities in Bangladesh from 2014–
15 to 2017–18. The result explored the chickpea genotype, BARI Chola-11 remained superior to the rest of
the elite genotypes for having a short maturity period (100–106 days), and lesser days to 50% flowering (47–
55 days). The same genotype was recorded to have robust vegetative and reproductive yield attributes including
plant height (49–57 cm), podsplant−1 (37–50), and optimum 100 seed weight (19.5–20.6 g). Owing to better yield
attributes, BARI Chola-11 resulted in the maximum seed yield (1200–1500 kg ha−1
) of chickpea and might be
recommended for general adoption in the region for boosting nutritional security status through improved productivity under changing climate. 相似文献
