Seed size variation: magnitude,distribution, and ecological correlates   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
Summary We examined seed-mass variation in 39 species (46 populations) of plants in eastern-central Illinois, USA. The coefficient of variation of seed mass commonly exceeded 20%. Significant variation in mean seed mass occurred among conspecific plants in most species sampled (by hierarchical ANOVA), averaging 38% of total variance. For most species, within-plant variation was the larger component of total variance, averaging 62% of total variance. Variation in seed mass among fruits within crops was significant in most species tested.We conclude that variation in seed mass among and within plants is widespread and common. There was little evidence of trade-offs between number of seeds and mean or variance of seed mass, and little correlational evidence of local competition for maternal resources. No consistent ecological (dispersal mode and growth form) correlates of variance of seed mass were evident.  相似文献

The effect of Escherichia coli single-stranded DNA binding protein (SSB) on DNA synthesis by T7 DNA polymerase and E. coli DNA polymerase I (large fragment) using native or aminofluorene-modified M13 templates was evaluated by in vitro DNA synthesis assays and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis. The two polymerase enzymes displayed differential responses to the addition of SSB. T7 DNA polymerase, a enzyme required for the replication of the T7 chromosome, was stimulated by the addition of SSB whether native or modified templates were used. On the other hand, E. coli DNA polymerase I was slightly stimulated by the addition of SSB to the native template but substantially inhibited on modified templates. This result suggests that DNA polymerase I may be able to synthesize past an aminofluorene adduct but that the presence of SSB inhibited this trans-lesion synthesis. Polyacrylamide gels of the products of DNA synthesis by polymerase I supported this inference since SSB caused a substantial increase in the accumulation of shorter DNA chains induced by blockage at the aminofluorene adduct sites.  相似文献

Hormonal control of hepatic glycogen and blood glucose levels is one of the major homeostatic mechanisms in mammals: glycogen is synthesized when portal glucose concentration is sufficiently elevated and degraded when glucose levels are low. We have studied initial events of hepatic glycogen synthesis by injecting the synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone (DEX) into adrenalectomized rats fasted overnight. Hepatic glycogen levels are very low in adrenalectomized rats, and DEX causes rapid deposition of the complex carbohydrate. Investigation of the process of glycogen deposition was performed by light and electron microscopic (EM) radioautography using [3H]galactose as a glycogen precursor. Rats injected with DEX for 2-3 h and [3H]galactose one hour before being killed displayed an increasing number of intensely labeled hepatocytes. EM radioautography revealed silver grains over small (+/- 1 micron) ovoid or round areas of the cytosome that were rich in smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) and contained a high concentration of small dense particles. These distinct areas or foci of SER and presumptive glycogen (SERGE) were most numerous during initial periods of glycogen synthesis. After longer exposure to DEX (4-5 h) more typical deposits of cytoplasmic glycogen were evident in the SERGE regions. Several criteria indicated that the SERGE foci contained glycogen or presumptive glycogen: resemblance of the largest dense particles to beta-glycogen particles in EM; association of 3H-carbohydrate with the foci; removal of particles and label with alpha-amylase; and positive reaction with periodic acid-chromic acid-silver methenamine. The concentration of SER in the small foci and the association of newly formed glycogen particles with elements of SER suggest a role for this organelle in the initial synthesis of glycogen.  相似文献

The development of the stratified squamous epithelium of the tympanic membrane and external canal was studied in 167 embryonic, fetal, and postnatal human ears. It originates as a tube derived from the epithelium of the fundus of the primary external canal (zone 1). The tube is composed of a thin, flat epithelium on the medial side (zone 2), continuous with a thicker one (zone 3) on the lateral side; zone 3 thereafter merges with the external epithelium of the primary external canal (zone 4). Proliferative activity, as indicated by a thickened epithelium, with rete ridges in later fetal life, is present mainly in zones 1 and 3. Cornification at 18 weeks gestation is followed by clearing of keratinous debris to the exterior. Subsequently the canal widens, zone 1 now covering the pars flaccida region, a tongue-shaped area passing inferiorly from it and a part of the postero-superior deep canal adjacent to it; zone 2 covers the pars tensa and zone 3 most of the deep external canal. On the basis of the original embryonic growth, migratory epithelial movement throughout life is postulated to be generated in zone 1 by mitotic interposition and then to pass to zone 2. It then moves en masse through to zone 3, where unilateral progression by mitotic means takes the epithelium up to the cartilaginous canal. Such a pathway is approximately that seen in the marked, living eardrum and canal.  相似文献

Anthropogenic food and energy production extensively mobilize reactive nitrogen (N) in the watershed of the North Atlantic Ocean (NAO). There is wide spread N distribution by both hydrologic and atmospheric processes within the watershed of the NAO, resulting in reactive N accumulation in terrestrial systems. Net denitrification in most estuaries and continental shelves exceeds the amount of N supplied to the shelves by rivers and requires a supply of nitrate from the open ocean. Thus riverine N is only transported to the open ocean in a few areas with the flow from a few major rivers (e.g., Amazon). Atmospheric N deposition to the open ocean has increased and may increase the productivity of the surface ocean. In addition, as a consequence of increased Fe deposition to the open ocean (due in part to anthropogenic processes), the rate of biological N-fixation may have increased resulting in N accumulation in the ocean. Phosphorus (P) is also mobilized by anthropogenic processes (primarily food production). Relative to N, more of the P is transported across the shelf to the open ocean from both estuaries and major rivers. There are several consequences of the increased availability of N and P that are unique to each element. However, the control on primary productivity in both coastal and open ocean ecosystems is dependent on a complex and poorly understood interaction between N and P mobilization and availability.  相似文献

The trend towards subspecialisation in hospital services is likely to lead to the development of vascular surgery as a separate specialty. If vascular surgery is to emerge as a high quality service then vascular emergencies--a substantial component of the workload--should be dealt with by surgeons with adequate training, and all patients should have equal access to the service. A specialist vascular surgical unit would have to be large enough to make efficient use of other services that it needs, such as radiology, and so may require the amalgamation of smaller health district units. Because of the differing local degrees of subspecialisation, national or regional strategies for vascular surgery must be developed.  相似文献

To establish baseline hematologic and plasma biochemistry values in free-ranging Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti), heparinized blood samples were collected from 51 apparently healthy, adult Humboldt penguins residing at two colonies off the Chilean coast. Thirty samples were collected in April, 1992, from penguins inhabiting the Ex-islote de los Pájaros Niños in Algarrobo, Chile. In September, 1992, 21 samples were collected from birds inhabiting Isla de Cachagua, Chile. Hematologic values measured include packed cell volume, leucocyte count, leucocyte differential, and the presence of blood parasites. Plasma biochemistry values measured include glucose, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, uric acid, calcium, inorganic phosphorous, sodium, potassium, chloride, total protein, albumin, globulin, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, and creatine kinase. Only the mean values for chloride and for the number of eosinophils differed significantly between the two sample groups. No blood parasites were seen. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Summary In the bullfrog, the meninges surrounding the central nervous system include an arachnoid mater that contains layers of cells with abundant intermediate filaments (IFs) having unique organizational characteristics. This membrane contains an inner lamina of cells that resemble fibroblasts and an outer lamina of flattened cells that are almost filled with IFs. The IFs of the outer arachnoid are arranged in compact, arching bundles that lie parallel to the outer surface of the central nervous system. Thus, sections cut tangentially to the membrane reveal bending of filament bundles, whereas transverse sections do not. In some cells bordering the subdural space, bundles of filaments are organized into highly-ordered spiral arrays. Attachments to the numerous desmosomes and, apparently, to the nuclear envelope suggest anchoring of cytoplasmic structures by the IF system. Microtubules occur primarily near the plasma membrane and the nucleus. Numerous caveolae also are associated with the plasma membrane.The unusual abundance, organization, and cytoplasmic relations of IFs in the bullfrog arachnoid suggest that this membrane may serve as an important model for study of fundamental cytoskeletal relations and function.  相似文献

The addition of nanomolar amounts of a toxin preparation derived from the sea anemone Stoichactis helianthus to black lipid membranes increases their electrical conductance by one million-fold. In addition, the membranes become permeable predominantly to monovalent cations. The elevated bilayer conductance is voltage-dependent, and the current-voltage curves of these bilayers display rectification as well as a region of negative resistance. The membrane activity of the toxin is proportional to the third power of its concentration, and at very low concentrations the membrane conductance increases in discrete uniform steps. These observations indicate that the mechanism of toxin action involves the formation of transmembrane channels constructed by the aggregation of protein molecules which are inserted in the bilayer. The voltage-dependent membrane conductance arises from two distinct channel characteristics: (1) the unit conductance of individual channels is dependent on the polarity of applied voltage; (2) the number of ion-conducting channels is influenced by the polarity as well as the magnitude of applied potential. It is believed that these effects are due to the influence of an electric field on the insertion of toxin molecules into the bilayer or on their subsequent association with each other to produce channels. Partial chemical characterization of the toxin material has shown that the membrane active factor is a basic protein with a molecular weight of 17 500.  相似文献
