Dynorphin A [1-17] induces "reward" in rats in the place conditioning paradigm

Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of dynorphin A [1-17] induced significant place preference conditioning in male, Sprague-Dawley rats. Place preferences were induced by 2.3 and 3.5 nmole, but not 1.2 nmole of dynorphin A. Co-administration of naloxone, 27.5 nmole but not 5.5 nmole, antagonized the reward response induced by 2.3 nmole of dynorphin A. Leu-enkephalin, 5 or 25 nmole, and dynorphin A [2-17], 2.3 or 3.5 nmole, had no effect in the place conditioning paradigm.     

Low-pressure microwave-induced helium plasma emission spectrometry: Vaporization characteristics of metal chlorides,nitrates, and sulfates

A low-pressure microwave-induced helium plasma serves as an excitation source for metal chlorides, nitrates, and sulfates vaporized from a filament, resulting in fractional vaporization and differential sensitivities of detection of the elements depending on the vapor pressures of their salts. The shapes of the single emission peaks, which are simple in the presence of potassium chloride, become complex and may double in number.     

Stereoselective hydrolysis of dl-menthyl succinate by gel-entrapped Rhodotorula minuta var. texensis cells in organic solvent

Summary dl-Menthyl succinate was successfully hydrolyzed stereoselectively by Rhodotorula minuta var. texensis cells entrapped within photo-crosslinked or polyurethane resin gels in water-saturated n-heptane. The hydrolyzed product was found to be pure l-menthol. The catalytic activity of the immobilized cells, especially those entrapped in urethane polymers, was far more stable than that of the free cells. The half-life of the polyurethaneentrapped cells was estimated to be 55–63 days in the organic solvent.Dedicated to the 65th birthday od Professor Dr. G. Manecke     

Two genes, atpC1 and atpC2, for the gamma subunit of Arabidopsis thaliana chloroplast ATP synthase.

Arabidopsis thaliana has two genes (atpC1, atpC2) coding for gamma subunits of chloroplast ATP synthase. The atpC1 and atpC2 were cloned and sequenced. They had no introns within the reading frames and coded for proteins of 373 and 386 amino acid residues, respectively, including putative transit sequences (50 and 60 amino acid residues, respectively). In contrast, the spinach gamma subunit gene had two introns within the reading frame. The mature sequences coded by the two genes of A. thaliana (atpC1, 323 residues; atpC2, 326 residues) were homologous with that of spinach (J. Miki, M. Maeda, Y. Mukohata, and M. Futai (1988) FEBS Lett. 232, 221-226): the homologies of gamma subunits coded by atpC1 and atpC2 were 72%, those of the subunits coded by atpC1 and spinach cDNA were 84%, and those of the proteins coded by atpC2 and spinach cDNA were 71%. Like the spinach subunit, the gamma subunits coded by the two genes had unique regulatory domains not found in mitochondrial or bacterial subunits. Poly(A)+ mRNAs corresponding to atpC1 (1.5 kilobases) and atpC2 (2.5 kilobases) were detected in illuminated plants, the amount of the former being at least 140 times that of the latter. The atpC1 mRNA was not found in dark-adapted plants. Nuclear protein(s) specifically bound to the upstream region of atpC1 was detected by gel shift assay and its binding was shown to be inhibited by the GT-1 element of the gene encoding the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase small subunit, which is expressed under illumination (P. J. Green, S. A. Kay, and N. H. Chau (1987) EMBO J. 6, 2543-2549). Consistent with these findings, an increased amount of the gamma subunit was detected immunochemically in illuminated plants.     

Mechanism in 1,25(OH)2D3-induced suppression of helper/suppressor function of CD4/CD8 cells to immunoglobulin production in B cells

On the basis of previous data that 1,25(OH)2D3 suppressed both helper and suppressor activities of CD4 and CD8 cells in the pokeweek mitogen-stimulated culture, we examined the further effect of 1,25(OH)2D3 on both cells to define how 1,25(OH)2D3 is involved in the deterioration of their functions. 1,25(OH)2D3 suppressed the pokeweed mitogen and phytohemagglutinin-induced DNA synthesis of CD4 and CD8 cells. The suppression by 1,25(OH)2D3 of DNA synthesis was caused by a time lag in reaching maximal response. 1,25(OH)2D3 also suppressed interleukin-2 production of CD4 and CD8 cells. 1,25(OH)2D3 did not, however, affect their interleukin-2 receptor expression detected within 24 hr after phytohemagglutinin stimulation. In addition, 1,25(OH)2D3 failed to suppress DNA synthesis of CD4 and CD8 cells when cultured with a large amount of interleukin-2. Suppression by 1,25(OH)2D3 of proliferation and interleukin-2 production in CD4 and CD8 cells would bring about the decrease of their helper or suppressor functions by inhibiting their expansion or maturation.     

Root-tip diameters of woody species in subalpine Abies forest

We clarified the differences in root-tip diameter (RTD) among tree and shrub species in an Abies forest. To evaluate the effects of sampling month and tree size on RTD, we measured the root-tip diameters of mature individuals of nine woody species and sapling individuals of two Abies species in a subalpine Abies forest on Mount Shimagare in central Japan. Species, sampling month, and their interaction affected RTD; however, the differences in RTD between some pairs of species were consistent across sampling months. The woody species fell into two groups, based on RTD size: tree species with larger RTDs (group 1) and shrub species with smaller RTDs (group 2). Seasonal changes in RTD were observed in three species and showed different patterns among species. Tree size did not affect RTD for either Abies species; however, there was an interaction between tree size and sampling month for Abies veitchii. The woody species category had the greatest effect on RTD, followed by sampling month and then tree size.
