The ovarian function is controlled by endocrine factors and neural influence. In late pregnant rat, androstenedione, from the coeliac ganglion, has a luteotrophic effect in the ex vivo coeliac ganglion-superior ovarian nerve-ovary system. In this work we investigate the presence of androgen receptors in the coeliac ganglion of late pregnant rats by immunohistochemistry. We also explore, from a physiological point of view, the potential participation of these receptors in the androstenedione ganglionic action on progesterone release and metabolism, as well as on nitrites release in the ovary compartment. The coeliac ganglion was isolated after being fixed in situ and immunohistochemistry was performed. In the system, three experimental groups were used with the addition of (a) androstenedione, (b) flutamide, and (c) androstenedione plus flutamide in the ganglion compartment. Progesterone and nitrite concentrations were determined in the ovary compartment at different incubation times. Corpora lutea samples isolated at the end of incubation were used to determine the expressions and activities of the progesterone synthesis (3β-hydroxysteroid-dehydrogenase, 3β-HSD) and degradation (20α-hydroxysteroid-dehydrogenase, 20α-HSD) enzymes. Immunohistochemistry revealed cytoplasmatic androgen receptor immunoreactivity in neural somas in the coeliac ganglion. In the coeliac ganglion-superior ovarian nerve-ovary system, androstenedione addition increased 3β-HSD and decreased 20α-HSD, showed a tendency to decrease 20α-HSD expression, and increased nitrites release in relation to control. Androstenedione plus flutamide decreased progesterone and nitrites release in relation to the androstenedione group. This work demonstrates the presence of androgen receptors in neurons of celiac ganglion and provides evidence for the luteotrophic action of androstenedione via a neural pathway that may be mediated by these receptors. 相似文献

Hypochlorite (HOCl) attacks amino acid residues in LDL making the particle atherogenic. Tryptophan is prone to free radical reactions and modification by HOCl. We hypothesized, that free tryptophan may quench the HOCl attack therefore protecting LDL. Free tryptophan inhibits LDL apoprotein modification and lipid oxidation. Tryptophan-HOCl metabolites associate with LDL reducing its oxidizability initiated by endothelial cells, Cu(2+) and peroxyl radicals. One tryptophan-HOCl metabolite was identified as 4-methyl-carbostyril which showed antioxidative activity when present during Cu(2+) mediated lipid oxidation, but did not associate with LDL. Indole-3-acetaldehyde, a decomposition product of tryptophan chloramine (the product of the tryptophan-HOCl reaction) was found to associate with LDL increasing its resistance to oxidation. Myeloperoxidase treatment of LDL in the presence of chloride, H(2)O(2) and tryptophan protected the lipoprotein from subsequent cell-mediated oxidation. We conclude that, in vivo, the activated myeloperoxidase system can generate antioxidative metabolites from tryptophan by the reaction of hypochlorite with this essential amino acid. 相似文献

Quasi‐parasitism occurs when a paired male facilitates dumping in its own nest by an extra‐pair female with which it has recently copulated. Although numerous observations hint at quasi‐parasitism in diverse avian species, direct behavioral confirmation of male complicity is required to exclude the alternative adaptive explanations enumerated by Griffith et al. [Behav. Ecol. Sociobiol. 56 (2004) 191]. Our direct observations on dumping by female blue‐footed boobies (Sula nebouxii) show apparent male ambivalence: males were hostile to eggs dumped by their extra‐pair partners but half‐hearted in repelling those partners after the act of dumping. Hostility was evidenced when a host male that was present during dumping destroyed the extra‐pair partner's egg and when extra‐pair partners selectively dumped when the host male was absent or distracted rather than when it was alone on the territory. Host males appear to deter dumping by their extra‐pair partners rather than facilitating it, and their partial tolerance of females that have dumped may be a result of their general tolerance of unaccompanied females. Although paired male boobies sometimes copulate with females that dump into their nests, apparently this is not quasi‐parasitism. 相似文献

A list of the 356 species of Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) recorded from Finland is presented, which comprises 6 Lestremiinae, 156 Micromyinae, 16 Winnertziinae, 69 Porricondylinae, and 109 Cecidomyiinae. The faunistic knowledge of Finnish Winnertziinae, Porricondylinae and Cecidomyiinae is regarded as particularly poor. Based on species numbers known from other countries in Europe, a conservative estimate is 700–800 species of Cecidomyiidae actually occurring in Finland. 相似文献

Lovastatin (LOV), a hydroxy-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMGCoA) reductase competitive inhibitor, blocks epidermal growth factor (EGF)— or prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α)—induced mitogenesis in confluent resting Swiss 3T3 cells. This inhibition occurs even in the presence of insulin, which potentiates the action of these mitogens in such cells. LOV exerts its effect in a 2–80 μM concentration range, with both mitogens attaining 50% inhibition at 7.5 μM. LOV exerted its effect within 0–8 h following mitogenic induction. Mevanolactone (10–80 μM) in the presence of LOV could reverse LOV inhibition within a similar time period. LOV-induced blockage of PGF2α response is reflected in a decrease in the rate of cell entry into S phase. Neither cholesterol, ubiquinone, nor dolichols of various lengths could revert LOV blockage. In EGF- or PGF2α-stimulated cells, LOV did not inhibit [3H]leucine or [3H]mannose incorporation into proteins, while tunicamycin, an inhibitor of N′ glycosylation, prevented this last phenomenon. Thus, it appears that LOV exerts its action neither by inhibiting unspecific protein synthesis nor by impairing the N′ glycosylation process. These findings strongly suggest that either EGF or PGF2α stimulations generate early cell cycle signals which induce mevalonate formation, N′ glycoprotein synthesis, and proliferation. The robber fly Mallophora ruficauda is one of the principal pests of apiculture in the Pampas region of Argentina. As adults they prey on honey bees and other insects, while as larvae they are solitary ectoparasitoids of third instar scarab beetle larvae. Females of M. ruficauda lay eggs away from the host in tall grasses. After being dispersed by the wind, larvae drop to the ground, where they dig in search of their hosts. It is known that second instar larvae of M. ruficauda exhibit active host searching behaviour towards its preferred host, third instar larva of Cyclocephala signaticollis. Although the means by which host location occurs has been studied and since superparasitism is a frequent scenario in the field, no information about host discrimination and host acceptance is available. We carried out studies in the field and behavioural experiments in the laboratory to determine if M. ruficauda is capable of quality host discrimination. We also studied if this parasitoid is capable of conspecific detection in order to avoid superparasitism. Finally, we analyzed the conditions under which superparasitism occurs in the field. We report here that the second instar larva of M. ruficauda is able to discriminate the parasitism status of the host by means of chemical cues, but is not capable of detecting conspecifics prior to attacking a host. We also found that the host cannot detect the presence of the parasitoid by means of chemical cues, so that no counter-defense against parasitism occurs. Furthermore, we determined that superparasitism occurs on the heavier hosts, i.e. those with more abundant resources which could harbor several parasitoid individuals. Finally, we discuss the possible implications of larval host location and host discrimination decisions on the fitness of this parasitoid. 相似文献
