Birds often lose feathers during predation attempts, and thisability has evolved as a means of escape. Because predatorsare more likely to grab feathers on the rump and the back thanon the ventral side of an escaping bird, we predicted that theformer feathers would have evolved to be relatively looselyattached as an antipredator strategy in species that frequentlydie from predation. We estimated the force required to removefeathers from the rump, back, and breast by pulling featherswith a spring balance from a range of European bird speciesin an attempt to investigate ecological factors associated withease of feather loss during predation attempts. The force requiredto loosen a feather from the rump was less than that requiredto loosen a feather from back, which in turn was less than thatrequired to loosen a feather from the breast. The relative forceneeded to loosen rump feathers compared with feathers from theback and the breast was smaller for prey species preferred bythe most common predator of small passerine birds, the sparrowhawkAccipiter nisus. Likewise, the relative force was also smallerin species with a high frequency of complete tail loss amongfree-living birds, which we used as an index of the frequencyof failed predation attempts. The relative force required toremove feathers from the rump was smaller in species with ahigh frequency of fear screams, another measure of the relativeimportance of predation as a cause of death. Feather loss requiredparticularly little force among solitarily breeding bird speciesthat suffer the highest degree of predation. Antipredator defensein terms of force required to remove feathers from the rumpwas larger in species with a strong antiparasite defense interms of T-cell–mediated immune response. These findingsare consistent with the hypothesis that different defenses areantagonistic and that they are traded off against each other.  相似文献

In this study, 18 partly commercially available samples of rock salt from Austria, Germany, Pakistan, Poland, Switzerland, and Ukraine were investigated with respect to their content of trace elements using instrumental neutron activation analysis. Elements detected were Al, Ba, Br, Ca, Ce, Cl, Co, Cr, Cs, Eu, Fe, Hf, La, Mn, Na, Rb, Sb, Sc, Sm, Sr, Ta, Tb, Th, and Zn, some of them only in individual cases. An estimation of the bioavailability of these trace elements was performed by dissolving an equivalent of the sodium chloride samples in diluted hydrochloric acid (simulating stomach acid), filtering off the insoluble components, and analyzing the evaporated filtrate. It could be shown that in most cases bioactive trace elements like Fe can be found in rock salt in the form of almost insoluble compounds and are therefore not significantly bioavailable, whereas thorium, for example, was partly bioavailable in two cases. A significant contribution to the recommended daily intake of metal trace elements by using rock salt for nutrition can be excluded.  相似文献

Growth line analysis of diagenetically altered scleractinians is only possible if carbonate diagenesis has followed the pathway of aragonite leaching and coeval formation of low magnesium calcite. All other possibilities of aragonite transformation into calcite exclude the preservation of this growth line banding. Genes of theHoxDcomplex related to theDrosophila Abd-Bgene are involved in the morphogenesis of vertebrate paired appendages.Hoxd-11,for instance, is necessary in combination with otherHoxgenes for the proper development of different parts of the tetrapod limbs. Sequence comparisons between the mouse, chicken, and zebrafishHoxd-11loci have revealed the conservation of several blocks of DNA sequence which may be of importance for the regulation ofHoxd-11expression. We have used transgenic mice to show that one of these conserved elements specifically drives expression in a proximal-posterior part of developing forelimbs. Production of mice transgenic for a full fishHoxd-11construct as well as for mouse–fishHoxd-11chimeric constructs shows that the fish counterpart of this sequence is able to elicit expression in mouse forelimbs as well, though in a slightly different domain. However, this fish element requires the presence of the mouse promoter and does not work in its own context. These results are discussed in light of both the control ofHoxdgene expression during limb development and the use of a comparative interspecies approach to understand the regulation of genes involved in vertebrate development.  相似文献

The relation between the results of laboratory tests and results of the interesting professional work is a very difficult one. The same is true for the relation between training and real performance. The pilot controlled MIR-docking manoeuvre is in reality a very seldom but very important one. The training of this manoeuvre is a very special professional work and only for cosmonauts available. But the objective estimation of the performance and the used objective and subjective needs is nevertheless necessary. Even for the subjective "stress"-feelings during task solving it is often impossible to get reliable data without any physiological measurements. The use of electrodes, cables and equipments is hardly limited during real work. Sometimes only the voice is available over more or less quality communication channels. So it is the case during the training and the real pilot controlled MIR-docking manoeuvre. Based on findings in the literature and own experiments analyzing the relation between fundamental voice frequency (F0) and subjective stress feelings we tested the hypothesis that a on-line measurement of F0 can be used for stress evaluation during standardised training sessions of MIR-docking manoeuvres.  相似文献

An overview is presented of the steady- and transient state kinetics of growth and formation of metabolic byproducts in yeasts.Saccharomyces cerevisiae is strongly inclined to perform alcoholic fermentation. Even under fully aerobic conditions, ethanol is produced by this yeast when sugars are present in excess. This so-called Crabtree effect probably results from a multiplicity of factors, including the mode of sugar transport and the regulation of enzyme activities involved in respiration and alcoholic fermentation. The Crabtree effect inS. cerevisiae is not caused by an intrinsic inability to adjust its respiratory activity to high glycolytic fluxes. Under certain cultivation conditions, for example during growth in the presence of weak organic acids, very high respiration rates can be achieved by this yeast.S. cerevisiae is an exceptional yeast since, in contrast to most other species that are able to perform alcoholic fermentation, it can grow under strictly anaerobic conditions.Non-Saccharomyces yeasts require a growth-limiting supply of oxygen (i.e. oxygen-limited growth conditions) to trigger alcoholic fermentation. However, complete absence of oxygen results in cessation of growth and therefore, ultimately, of alcoholic fermentation. Since it is very difficult to reproducibly achieve the right oxygen dosage in large-scale fermentations, non-Saccharomyces yeasts are therefore not suitable for large-scale alcoholic fermentation of sugar-containing waste streams. In these yeasts, alcoholic fermentation is also dependent on the type of sugar. For example, the facultatively fermentative yeastCandida utilis does not ferment maltose, not even under oxygen-limited growth conditions, although this disaccharide supports rapid oxidative growth.  相似文献

The occ and noc regions in octopine and nopaline Ti plasmids, respectively, are responsible for the catabolism of octopine and nopaline in Agrobacterium. The functions are activated in the presence of the opines by OccR and NocR, two related regulatory proteins, and the promoters contain common sequence motifs. We have investigated heterologous interactions between the regulators and the promoters. Previous experiments using all possible heterologous combinations of opines, regulators, and promoters in vivo had demonstrated that only the combination of nopalme, NocR, and the occ promoter led to limited promoter activation. We now show that OccR and NocR bind to the heterologous promoters in vitro and in vivo. The weak or non-existent promoter activation actually observed could be explained by the assumption that OccR and NocR use different activation mechanisms; we investigated protein-induced DNA bending because of reports that the two regulators differ in this respect. Analysis with a bending vector showed that both OccR and NocR induced a DNA bend that is relaxed in the presence of the respective opine. The data suggest that subtle differences in regulator/promoter interactions are responsible for the inactivity of the heterologous combinations. Investigations with a chimeric NocR/OccR protein indicated that it induced a DNA bend in both promoters. No opine-induced relaxation was detectable with the hybrid, and the inducible promoter was not activated. These findings suggest that bend relaxation may be an integral part of promoter activation.  相似文献

CENP-B, a highly conserved centromere-associated protein, binds to -satellite DNA, the centromeric satellite of primate chromosomes, at a 17-bp sequence, the CENP-B box. By fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with an oligomer specific for the CENP-B box sequence, we have demonstrated the abundance of CENP-B boxes on all chromosomes (except the Y) of humans, chimpanzee, pygmy chimpanzee, gorilla, and orangutan. This sequence motif was not detected in the genomes of other primates, including gibbons, Old and New World monkeys, and prosimians. Our results indicate that the CENP-B box containing subtype of -satellite DNA may have emerged recently in the evolution of the large-bodied hominoids, after divergence of the phylogenetic lines leading to gibbons and apes; the box is thus on the order of 15–25 million years of age. The rapid process of dispersal and fixation of the CENP-B box sequence throughout the human and great ape genomes is thought to be a consequence of concerted evolution of -satellite subsets on both homologous and nonhomologous chromosomes.Correspondence to: T.
