SUMMARY. 1. The tnierodistribution of Gammarus species is size assortative: larger animals are associated with larger substrate particles. Using an artificial stream with scrubbed substrate we investigate the hypothesis that the assortative mechanism is stimulated by current avoidance rather than food searching.
2. In uniformly mixed substrate, G. pulex tend to move upstream, but in patchy substrate they are found in a predictable substrate grade. There is no discrimination between patches by different size classes of G. pulex in static water. The size assortative field pattern can only be reproduced under flow conditions in the laboratory. It occurs in the absence of food and irrespective of the sequence or location of substrate patches.
3. As density increases, G. pulex are displaced from the optimal patches but move into the open stream rather than into the cover of alternative patch types.
4. We discuss the significance of these results and suggest that some earlier models explaining mechanisms for microdistribution patterns tnay have been unnecessarily complex. Contrasts between natural and simulated stream situations and their experimental advantages are noted.  相似文献

Abstract: We captured and radiocollared 57 pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) fawns in western South Dakota, USA, during May 2002–2003 and radiotracked them through 15 months of age, by which time all surviving individuals had established a permanent home range. We classified 56% (n = 19) of fawns as dispersers and 44% (n = 15) as residents. Eighty-four percent (n = 16) of dispersers departed natal home ranges in late October and occupied winter home ranges for 102–209 days before dispersing to permanent home ranges during April 2003 and 2004. Dispersal distances from natal ranges to permanent home ranges varied from 6.2–267.0 km. Winter home-range sizes for all individual pronghorns varied from 39.4–509.6 km. Permanent home-range size for all individuals varied from 15.5–166.1 km2. Mean 95% permanent home-range size differed (P = 0.06) between residents (x̄ = 97.3 ± 15.1 km2) and dispersers (x̄ = 48.6 ± 16.0 km2), but was similar (P = 0.97) among sexes. Mean dispersal distance from natal to permanent home ranges was similar (P = 0.35) for males (x̄ = 54.2 ± 21.0 km) and females (x̄ = 26.3 ± 19.9 km). We suggest that habitat quality (i.e., patchiness) and pronghorn density, in part, stimulated dispersal. We hypothesize that as habitat patch size decreases, home range sizes and distance traveled during predispersal and dispersal movements by pronghorns will increase.  相似文献

Gaps in the canopy have a major influence upon the microenvironmentfor seed germination in natural vegetation. Two methods formeasuring gaps in grasslands are described. The first uses afield-portable instrument for mapping R/IR ratios under thecanopy, and the second employs infrared photography and imageanalysis to measure gaps from above. The methods are illustratedwith results from an experiment in which grazing sheep are theprinciple influence upon the structure of the grass canopy.Results of both methods show that the effects of current andpast grazing regimes may be detected in the canopy structureof the grassland. Red clover genotypes capable of regenerating plantletsin vitrofromnon-meristem-derived callus are rare. A previous study identifieda pair of near isogenic lines which were derived from a singleseed but differed in regenerative ability. The callus-derivedplants of this clone were highly regenerative when reintroducedto culture whereas the epicotyl-derived plants produced non-regenerativecallus cultures. The objective of the present study was to observemeiotic chromosome pairing and to compare isozyme profiles andferritin gene expression in regenerative and non-regenerativeplants and cultures from the clone. Meiotic cells exhibitednormal homologous chromosome pairing. Starch gel zymograms fromglasshouse-grown regenerative (F49R) and non-regenerative (F49M)plants failed to show somaclonal variation for alcohol dehydrogenase,glutamate dehydrogenase, esterase or peroxidase. Isoelectricfocusing of callus cultures from regenerative and non-regenerativeplants revealed that regeneration was accompanied by a reductionin staining intensity and numbers of peroxidase bands comparedto non-regenerative cultures. A unique cathodic peroxidase band(pI 7.6) was associated with non-regenerative cultures. 1. Rates of whole‐system metabolism (production and respiration) are fundamental indicators of ecosystem structure and function. Although first‐order, proximal controls are well understood, assessments of the interactions between proximal controls and distal controls, such as land use and geographic region, are lacking. Thus, the influence of land use on stream metabolism across geographic regions is unknown. Further, there is limited understanding of how land use may alter variability in ecosystem metabolism across regions. 2. Stream metabolism was measured in nine streams in each of eight regions (n = 72) across the United States and Puerto Rico. In each region, three streams were selected from a range of three land uses: agriculturally influenced, urban‐influenced, and reference streams. Stream metabolism was estimated from diel changes in dissolved oxygen concentrations in each stream reach with correction for reaeration and groundwater input. 3. Gross primary production (GPP) was highest in regions with little riparian vegetation (sagebrush steppe in Wyoming, desert shrub in Arizona/New Mexico) and lowest in forested regions (North Carolina, Oregon). In contrast, ecosystem respiration (ER) varied both within and among regions. Reference streams had significantly lower rates of GPP than urban or agriculturally influenced streams. 4. GPP was positively correlated with photosynthetically active radiation and autotrophic biomass. Multiple regression models compared using Akaike’s information criterion (AIC) indicated GPP increased with water column ammonium and the fraction of the catchment in urban and reference land‐use categories. Multiple regression models also identified velocity, temperature, nitrate, ammonium, dissolved organic carbon, GPP, coarse benthic organic matter, fine benthic organic matter and the fraction of all land‐use categories in the catchment as regulators of ER. 5. Structural equation modelling indicated significant distal as well as proximal control pathways including a direct effect of land‐use on GPP as well as SRP, DIN, and PAR effects on GPP; GPP effects on autotrophic biomass, organic matter, and ER; and organic matter effects on ER. 6. Overall, consideration of the data separated by land‐use categories showed reduced inter‐regional variability in rates of metabolism, indicating that the influence of agricultural and urban land use can obscure regional differences in stream metabolism.  相似文献

Abstract: We analyzed 16 years of mark-recapture data to investigate whether a wildfire influenced survival of an arboreal ambush-forager (broad-headed snake [Hoplocephalus bungaroides]) and a terrestrial active forager (small-eyed snake Cryptophis nigrescens). We predicted that wildfire would cause direct mortality and reduce subsequent survival of both snake species. Contrary to this prediction, wildfire did not affect abundance of broad-headed snakes, but abundance of small-eyed snakes decreased by 48% after the wildfire. Estimated annual survival of small-eyed snakes was 37% lower after fire (s=0.47, SE=0.07) than before fire (s=0.74, SE=0.05). Prescribed burning may be a suitable tool for creating open habitat mosaics for the endangered broad-headed snake.  相似文献

The taxonomic and evolutionary affinities of Southern hemisphere smooth‐shelled blue mussels are unclear, with studies using different marker types having identified different relationships among various geographic regions. Using an existing and a new molecular assay, the present study builds on previous work to test the distribution of blue mussels native to and introduced to the Southern hemisphere. Populations of Mytilus were sampled from New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. The nuclear‐DNA marker Me 15/16 was used to identify the taxonomic status of 484 individuals. A new restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) assay was used to identify the hemisphere of origin for a subset of Mytilus galloprovincialis. The Me15/16 marker identified 478 pure M. galloprovincialis from Southern hemisphere sites and six Mytilus edulis/M. galloprovincialis hybrids from the Auckland Islands (New Zealand) and Chile. A cytoplasmic RFLP identified Northern hemisphere M. galloprovincialis in almost every Southern hemisphere region. The presence of native M. galloprovincialis at high latitudes (up to 52°S) has implications for our understanding of environmentally induced selective constraints considered to determine species distributions. Widespread occurrence of invasive Northern hemisphere blue mussels in the Southern hemisphere is documented for the first time. Identification of inter‐specific hybrids (M. edulis × M. galloprovincialis) in Chile and in the Auckland Islands (subantarctic New Zealand) illustrates that environments ranging from international ports to remote protected locations are vulnerable to bioinvasion. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 898–909.  相似文献
