People who suffer from eating disorders often have to be treated against their will, perhaps by being detained, perhaps by being forced to eat. In this paper it is argued that whilst forcing compliance is generally acceptable, there may be circumstances under which a sufferer's refusal of consent to treatment should be respected. This argument will hinge upon whether someone in the grip of an eating disorder can actually make competent decisions about their quality of life. If so, then the decision to refuse therapy may be on a par with other decisions to refuse life-prolonging therapy made by sufferers of debilitating chronic, or acute onset terminal illness. In such cases, palliation might justifiably replace aggressive therapy. The argument will also draw heavily on the distinction between competent refusal of therapy and passive euthanasia, and the distinction between incompetent and irrational decisions. Both distinctions will then be applied to decisions to refuse food. The extent to which sufferers from anorexia nervosa can be categorised as either incompetent or irrational will be examined. It is against this background that it will be argued that at least some of those who suffer from eating disorders should have their refusals respected, even if they may die as a result.  相似文献

A range of long established inbred lines derived from the TEXAS population of Drosophila melanogaster have been used to elucidate the nature of the competitive interactions which occur in genetically heterogeneous mixtures. A prerequisite for this type of investigation is the ability to distinguish the genotypes which compete in mixed culture. Specific marker alleles are generally used to achieve this distinction although in the past little attention has been given to the possibility of competitive bias introduced by the marker alleles themselves. For the experiments reported in this paper two specific marker alleles (y 2 and w a) have been introduced independently into the TEXAS inbred lines. In this way the original wild type inbred lines could be compared with similar series of genotypes marked with either y 2 or w a and the effects of the marker alleles determined.The results indicated that the body colour mutation (y 2) was neutral in its effect on the competitive interaction of recipient strains. The introduction of the white apricot eye colour mutation (w a) however, had a pronounced and deleterious effect on competitive ability. This effect was to render genotypes less able to compete effectively in mixed culture by depressing inter-genotypic competitive ability. These effects were found to be consistent over a range of genotypes and for each of two characters measuring competitive success.  相似文献

Summary Both carotid bodies from 26 patients coming to necropsy were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin and sections 4 m thick were stained for various peptides by use of the immunogold technique. The results show that the human carotid body contains met- and leu-enkephalin, substance P, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), neurotensin and bombesin. The distribution of these six peptides within the carotid body differs. Thus met- and leu-enkephalin are both present predominantly within glomic chief cells but with a marked tendency to favour the dark variant of these cells. Substance P and VIP both show a weak immunoreactivity in comparison to the enkephalins and are present in all three variants of chief cell. Neurotensin shows the weakest immunoreactivity of all and is restricted to a few glomic chief cells in a minority of cases. Bombesin also shows a weak immunoreactivity in glomic chief cells but a strong reaction in glomic arteries and arterioles. In these vessels bombesin appears to be confined to smooth muscle cells in the media but we cannot say whether it is secreted by them or merely bound to receptor sites on their membranes. These findings are related to quantitative data on the concentration of peptides in the human carotid body from a previous paper with which we were associated.  相似文献

Summary The functional integrity of the QUTB gene (encoding quinate dehydrogenase) has been confirmed by transformation of a qutB mutant strain. The DNA sequence of the contiguous genes QUTD (quinate permease), QUTB and QUTG (function unknown) has been determined and analysed, together with that of QUTE (catabolic 3-dehydroquinase). The QUTB sequence shows significant homology with the shikimate dehydrogenase function of the complex AROM locus of Aspergillus nidulans, and with the QA-3 quinate dehydrogenase and QA-1S (repressor) genes of Neurospora crassa. The QUTD gene shows strong homology with the N. crassa QA-Y gene and QUTG with the QA-X gene. QUTD, QUTB, and QUTG, QUTE form two pairs of divergently transcribed genes, and conserved sequence motifs identified in the two common 5 non-coding regions show significant homology with UAS GAL and UAS QA sequences of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae and N. crassa Gal and QA systems. In addition, conserved 5 sequences homologous to the mammalian CAAT box are noted and a previously unreported conserved 22 nucleotide motif is presented.  相似文献

Summary The removal of fungal spores, urediniospores ofMelampsora medusae and conidia ofPestalozzia sp., from the leaf surfaces ofPopulus xeuramericana (Dode) Guinier cv. I-488 was assessed using three cultural techniques conventionally employed in phylloplane studies. The method of removal and the original density of spore deposition, but not the interaction of these factors, were significant determinants of variability in spore removal. Irrespective of the original density of deposition, the leaf print method was the most, and the leaf washing technique the least, efficient means of spore removal from the leaf surface. Factors which could contribute to this difference in efficiency are discussed.  相似文献

Das Verhalten des Beuteltiers Dasyuroides byrnei in Gefangenschaft wurde untersucht. Dasyuroides ist nachtaktiv und verbirgt sich tagsüber in einem Bau oder Schlupfwinkel. Körperhaltung, Fortbewegungsarten, Höhlengraben, Beutefang und andere Verhaltensweisen sind beschrieben. Das Duftmarkieren hat Mitteilungswert. Beide Geschlechter setzen Duftstoff ab, indem sie ihre Sternaldrüsen und Kloakengegend an Gegenständen reiben. Freundschaftliche, kämpferische, sexuelle und mütterliche Verhaltensweisen werden beschrieben. Dasyuroides scheint kein geselliges Tier zu sein; Angriffe gegen Artgenossen führen selten zu Verletzungen, weil das Angriffsverhalten stark stilisiert ist. Wachstum und Entwicklung der Jungen wurden verfolgt. Die durchschnittliche Wurfgröße beträgt fünf oder sechs; die Jungen bleiben an den Zitzen des ♀ bis zum 56. Lebenstag. Mit 100 Tagen können sie entwöhnt werden. Das Verhalten dieser Art wird mit anderen Arten der Familie Dasyuridae verglichen, auch mit Plazentaliern.  相似文献

We conducted visual fish surveys in coexisting mangrove-coral (CMC) habitats in Panama to analyze the effect of coral presence in mangrove habitats on the fish assemblage. Our study revealed that CMC habitats harbor distinct fish assemblages compared to mangrove habitats without coral, with greater species richness and increased herbivore abundance. Recent studies examining the molecular mechanisms of isoniazid (INH) resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis have demonstrated that a significant percentage of drug-resistant strains are mutated in the katG gene which encodes a catalase–peroxidase, and the majority of these alterations are missense mutations which result in the substitution of a single amino acid. In previous reports, residues which may be critical for enzymatic activity and the drug-resistant phenotype have been identified by evaluating INH-resistant clinical isolates and in vitro mutants. In this study, site-directed mutagenesis techniques were utilized to alter the wild-type katG gene from M. tuberculosis at 13 of these codons. The effects of these mutations were determined using complementation assays in katG -defective, INH-resistant strains of Mycobacterium smegmatis and Mycobacterium bovis BCG. This mutational analysis revealed that point mutations in the katG gene at nine of the 13 codons can cause drug resistance, and that enzymatic activity and resistance to INH are inversely related. In addition, mutations in the mycobacterial catalase–peroxidase which reduce catalase activity also decrease peroxidase activity.  相似文献

Physiol. 83(3): 837-844, 1997.Although the mechanisms remain unknown, maternal coretemperature (Tc) decreases nearterm of pregnancy and is increased throughout lactation in rats. Thepurpose of our present experiments was to determine whether pregnancy and lactation shift the thermoneutral zone of rats and to investigate whether the changes in maternal Tcduring pregnancy and lactation result from "forced" or"regulated" thermoregulatory responses. Conscious, chronicallyinstrumented nonpregnant and pregnant and lactating rats were studiedboth in a thermocline (a chamber with a linear temperature gradientfrom 12 to 36°C) and in a metabolic chamber to determine theinfluence of pregnancy and lactation on selected ambient temperature aswell as the thermoregulatory response to changes in ambienttemperature. We found that selected ambient temperature, oxygenconsumption, and thermal conductance did not change in rats studied ina thermocline as Tc decreased nearterm of pregnancy. There was, however, a downward shift in thethermoneutral zone of rats studied in a metabolic chamber near term ofpregnancy. During lactation, selected ambient temperature decreased inrats studied in a thermocline as oxygen consumption andTc increased. The thermoneutralzone of lactating rats was not different from that of nonpregnantanimals. Thus our data provide evidence that the decrease inTc near term of pregnancy in ratsresults from a regulated thermoregulatory response,whereas the increase in Tc duringlactation results from a forced thermoregulatory response.
