Does maternal condition or predation risk influence small mammal population dynamics? 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
There is strong debate over whether the intrinsic traits of individuals or the extrinsic environment exert the greater influence on small mammal population dynamics. We test the roles of maternal effects (an intrinsic factor) and predation risk (an extrinsic factor) in the population dynamics of wild strain house mice using a 2-factor enclosure experiment. Pre-release supplemental feeding with a high-fat diet created female treatment founders that were 6–10% heavier than controls, a condition that we predicted would be passed on as a maternal effect. Predation risk was enhanced using regular application of predator (red fox Vulpes vulpes ) scats. Founder populations of six females and six males released into eight, 15×15 m enclosures showed near exponential population growth over 17 weeks (maximum 3 generations). But there were no responses to either treatment in terms of survival, inherited body weights, fecundity or population size. We suggest that elevated maternal condition may have only minor and transient intergenerational effects with little long-term consequence. We also suggest that the general significance of predator scats as a cue to predation risk to alter prey behaviour may have been overestimated. There are too many kinds of organisms to be able to study and manage each, yet the loss of a single species can sometimes unravel an ecosystem. Such `fusewire species'– critical in the same sense that an electrical fuse can cut out a whole circuit – would be a rewarding focus for research and management effort. However, this approach can only be effective if these `fusewires' represent but a small proportion of the number of species in the system.

The glutamine analog, 6-diazo-5-oxo-l-norleucine (DON), a glycoconjugate inhibitor, was used to probe the relationships between myocardial secretion of extracellular matrix and endothelial differentiation and formation of cushion mesenchyme (primordia of AV values). When DON was given to stage 12 chick embryos maintained in shell-less culture, the myocardial secretion gradient of glucose- and sulfate-labeled matrix was blocked. Concomitantly, the endothelium failed to complete activation but continued to divide and incorporate thymidine. By varying DON concentration, two distinct phases of endothelial differentiation were identified: the first (labile to 0.5 μg) involved hypertrophy, the second (labile to 0.25 μg) acquisition of migratory appendages with resultant mesenchyme formation. Glucosamine + DON (but not inosine, glucose, or glutamine) restored the matrical secretion gradient and to varying degrees both phases of endothelial activation. Endothelia totally suppressed from forming mesenchyme in situ acquired this capacity when explanted into three-dimensional collagen gel culture. The capacity was enhanced by glucosamine given in situ as an inhibitory override, dependent upon serum concentration, inhibited by heat-inactivated serum or by adding DON to the medium, but unaffected by hyaluronate. These results were compared to those obtained by co-culturing endothelium and myocardium and discussed in terms of the hypothesis that cushion mesenchyme formation results from an epithelial interaction mediated by glycoconjugates. 相似文献

Final instar Persectania ewingii (Westwood) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were fed seedling Triticum aestivum L. for 2 days to determine the approximate digestibility of the cell wall and cell content fractions. Cell wall content was estimated using a micro-analytical neutral detergent fibre technique. Approximate digestibilites of neutral detergent fibre, neutral detergent solubles and dry matter were calculated for individuals and pooled samples. P. ewingii larvae digested a small but significant proportion of the fibre ingested (13–21%), higher than that previously reported for herbivorous insects. The micro-analytical and previously used macro-analytical techniques produced similar estimates of digestibility although both techniques have inherent shortcomings, the latter requiring the pooling of samplex and the former limiting the number of replicates during chemical analysis. Differences in the amount of larval frass collected during the feeding trial (corrected for consumption) explained much of the variation in digestibility values, while there were no effects of larval mass, overall consumption and total frass produced on digestibility estimates. These results confirm that plant cell contents are the major source of nutrients to larval Lepidoptera although there is some chemical disruption of the plant cell wall. 相似文献

A psychrotrophic toxin-producing strain of Aeromonas hydrophila grew well in a range of food slurries (scallop, prawn, fish, chicken liver paté, liverwurst, chicken luncheon slice and commercial baby food preparations) held at refrigeration temperatures. In most foods, excluding the baby food preparations, exotoxins were produced at levels comparable with production in bacteriological broth without apparent food spoilage (all but prawn and fish). Addition of ultra-heat treated (UHT) milk to toxin-containing broth culture supernatants markedly decreased or removed haemolytic and cytotoxic activities, explaining low levels of toxins found in milk in a previous study. Baby food preparations did not inactivate exotoxins under similar conditions suggesting production of toxins rather than their inactivation was inhibited in these foods. 相似文献

The long-term evolution of the hepatitis C virus hypervariable region (HVR) and flanking regions of the E1 and E2 envelope proteins have been studied in a cohort of women infected from a common source of anti-D immunoglobulin. Whereas virus sequences in the infectious source were relatively homogeneous, distinct HVR variants were observed in each anti-D recipient, indicating that this region can evolve in multiple directions from the same point. Where HVR variants with dissimilar sequences were present in a single individual, the frequency of synonymous substitution in the flanking regions suggested that the lineages diverged more than a decade previously. Even where a single major HVR variant was present in an infected individual, this lineage was usually several years old. Multiple lineages can therefore coexist during long periods of chronic infection without replacement. The characteristics of amino acid substitution in the HVR were not consistent with the random accumulation of mutations and imply that amino acid replacement in the HVR was strongly constrained. Another variable region of E2 centered on codon 60 shows similar constraints, while HVR2 was relatively unconstrained. Several of these features are difficult to explain if a neutralizing immune response against the HVR is the only selective force operating on E2. Genetic code expansion for unnatural amino acid mutagenesis has, until recently, been limited to cell culture. We demonstrate the site-specific incorporation of unnatural amino acids into proteins in Drosophila melanogaster at different developmental stages, in specific tissues and in a subset of cells within a tissue.
