Dimeric chromenes and mixed dimers of a chromene with euparin from Encelia canescens

The investigation of Encelia canescens afforded, in addition to several known compounds, four new dimeric p-hydroxyacetophenone derivatives, two epimeric chromene dimers and two epimeric mixed dimers of euparin and encecalin. Furthermore, derivatives of tremetone and of encecalin were present. The structures were elucidated hy high field ¹H NMR spectroscopy.     

Detection of a C-insertion polymorphism within the human tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFA) gene

We have identified a C-insertion polymorphism in the 5'UTR of the first exon of the human tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFA) gene. TNFA is a cytokine that plays an important role in the inflammatory response.     

Endemische Phytoassoziationen aus den Rumänischen Karpaten

The importance of endemic species for plant communities in the Roumanian Carpathians Mts. has been studied and discussed. Associations of the classAsplenietea trichomanis endemic in the South Carpathians were surveyed; they were classified into some endemic alliances (Gypsophilion petraeae, Micromerion pulegii, andSilenion lerchenfeldianae). Their locus classicus, nomenclatoric type and present distribution were also given.     

Information about previous phosphate fluctuations is stored via an adaptive response of the high-affinity phosphate uptake system of the cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans

The high-affinity uptake system of phosphatelimited cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans [Synechococcus leopoliensis (Raciborski) Komarek] is characterized by a threshold value below which uptake cannot occur. Here it is shown that, if phosphate-limited cyanobacteria are challenged with a short pulse of high phosphate concentration that appreciably exceeds this threshold value, the uptake system undergoes an adaptive response, leading to the attainment of new kinetic properties and a new threshold value. These new properties are maintained for several hours after the pulse. A notable characteristic of this new state is a wide linear dependence of the uptake rate on the external phosphate potential that is a function of the driving force of the uptake process. According to theoretical arguments it is shown that this “linear operation mode” can be explained by the simultaneous operation of several uptake systems with different, staggered threshold values and kinetic properties. Moreover, the new linear uptake properties, in turn, reflect the prehistory of phosphate supply experienced by the population. The consequences of this result with regard to environmental fluctuations of the phosphate concentration in lakes are discussed.     

Melampolides from Enhydra fluctuans var. Fluctuans

The investigation of the aerial parts of a variety of Enhydra fluctuans afforded in addition to 4-hydroxyfarnesyl acetate and fluctuadin five new melampolides elucidated by high field ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.

Neue cadinan-derivate aus Heterotheca subaxillaris

The investigation of some Heterotheca species afforded three new cadinane angelicates, in addition to several known compounds. The structures are elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.     

Neue diterpene und germacranolide aus Mikania-Arten

From three Mikania species, three new labdanic acid and two kaurenic acid derivatives have been isolated together with known compounds and four new germacranolides, differing only in the ester moiety.     

Diterpenes with a new carbon skeleton from Printzia Laxa

The aerial parts of the South African composite Printzia laxa contain two manoyl oxides and three clerodane derivatives together with two further acids, which belong to a new type of diterpene, biogenetically closely related to the clerodanes. The structures have been elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The constituents may indicate some relationship of Printzia to the tribe Astereae.
