Practically all animals must find food while avoiding predators.An individual's perception of predation risk may depend on manyfactors, such as distance to refuge and group size, but it isunclear whether individuals respond to different factors ina similar manner. We tested whether flocks of foraging starlingsresponded in the same way to an increased perception of predationrisk by assessing three factors: (1) neighbor distances, (2)habitat obstruction, and (3) recent exposure to a predator.We found that in all three scenarios of increased risk, starlingsreduced their interscan intervals (food-searching bouts), whichincreased the frequency of their vigilance periods. We thenexamined how one of these factors, habitat obstruction, affectedescape speed by simulating an attack with a model predator.Starlings were slower to respond in visually obstructed habitats(long grass swards) and slower when they had their head downin obstructed habitats than when they had their head down inopen habitats. In addition, reaction times were quicker whenstarlings could employ their peripheral fields of vision. Ourresults demonstrate that different sources of increased riskcan generate similar behavioral responses within a species.The degree of visibility in the physical and social environmentaffects both the actual and perceived risk of predation. 相似文献

Quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill.), pear (Pyrus communis L.) and olive (Olea europaea L.) genotypes were evaluated for their tolerance to iron deficiency stress by growing young plants in three types of aerated nutrient solutions: (1) with iron, (2) without iron or (3) low in iron and with 10 mM bicarbonate. Plants were obtained either from rooted softwood cuttings or from germination of seeds. The degree of tolerance was evaluated with several indices: (1) the chlorophyll content, (2) the root Fe3+ reducing capacity and (3) the whole plant relative growth. Fifteen hours before Fe3+ reducing capacity determination, iron was applied to the roots of plants with iron-stress, since this method resulted in increasing the reductase activity. All quince and pear genotypes increased the root Fe3+ reducing capacity when grown in the treatments for iron-stress, in relation to control plants of the same genotypes. In olive cultivars, the Fe3+ reducing capacity was lower in the iron-stress treatments than in the control one. Studying the relationship between relative growth and chlorophyll content for each genotype under iron-stress, in relation to both indices in control plants, a classification of species and genotypes was established. According to that, most olive cultivars and some pear rootstocks and cultivars appear more iron-efficient than quince rootstocks. Human and bovine vitamin D-binding protein (DBP) have been isolated from serum by a method that does not involve denaturing steps. This method includes Cibacron Blue-Sepharose chromatography, gel filtration, DEAE-Sephadex chromatography and albumin immunoadsorption. Analysis of fatty acids bound to the isolated human and bovine DBP showed molar ratios of fatty acid to protein of 0.4 and 1.3 respectively meanwhile human and bovine albumin have bound 1.8 and 1.5 moles per mol respectively. Most of fatty acids bound to human and bovine DBP are monounsaturated and saturated, mainly oleic and palmitic acids, which together account for 50% of the total of fatty acids in both species. Observations on the behavior of living hominoids show generic differences in the use and posture of the wrist joint. Both
orang-utans and hylobatids usually use the wrist in suspensory behaviors. However, orang-utans emphasize markedly adducted
and flexed wrist postures, while hylobatids emphasize violent forearm and wrist rotation. African apes, especially the gorilla,
use the wrist more frequently than other hominoids for terrestrial quadrupedal weight-bearing. Humans use the wrist less frequently
for supportive purposes than do other hominoids. These behavioral differences correspond to structural specializations in
the proximal carpal joint of each of the hominoid genera. Although each of the hominoid genera has apparently modified its
proximal carpal joint best to serve its characteristic behaviors, all hominoids share a unique proximal carpal joint that
permits approximately 160ℴ of forearm rotation. The hylobatid proximal carpal joint is specialized in exhibiting a marked
development of those structures limiting forearm rotation, but it is in most respects the least derived— that is, closest
to the nonhominoid anthropoids. Chimpanzees show a proximal carpal joint that is more generalized than those of the other
great apes but more derived than that of hylobatids. The human and gorilla proximal wrist joints, on the other hand, show
marked modifications for weight-bearing in terrestrial behaviors. Orang-utans have the most derived proximal carpal joint,
which in many respects parallels that of the slow-climbing nonhominoid primates. The comparative anatomy and structural specializations
of the wrist joint support (a) an early divergence of hylobatids from the common hominoid stock, (b) a common ancestry for
gorillas and humans separate from the other hominoids, and (c) a long independent evolutionary period for orang-utans since
their divergence from the common hominoid stock, or one that was marked by strong selection pressures for wrist specializations.
Unfortunately, the generalized condition of the chimpanzee’s wrist joint and the very derived condition of the orang-utan
wrist provide uncertain evidence as to which of the two was first to diverge from the common hominoid stock. Identification
of hominoid wrist specializations as reflecting real phylogenetic relationships or parallelisms depends on how well the phytogeny
inferred from wrist morphology accords with those arrived at from the study of other systems. 相似文献

The uptake of vaccinia virus in polarized epithelial cells was studied to determine whether the site of entry was confined to either the apical or the basolateral membrane. Virus infection was monitored with a recombinant vaccinia virus carrying the luciferase reporter gene. Using cell lines MDCK and MDCK-D11, a clonal line with high transepithelial electrical resistance, we determined that vaccinia virus preferentially enters through the basolateral membrane. The possibility that there is a polarized cell surface distribution of vaccinia virus receptors which may be involved in systemic poxvirus infections is discussed. 相似文献

The morphology, infraciliature, and life cycle of Endosphaera terebrans, a suctorian endocommensal of peritrichs, have been studied with the aid of silver impregnation. The life cycle of Endosphaera terebrans begins with infection of the host cell by a small larva. The swarmer has a pointed needle-like cellular projection and two rings of cilia. The swarmer penetrates the the peritrich, loses the cilia, and then matures into an adult. The infraciliature of the adult form has four rows of barren kinetosomes that lack kinetodesmal fibers. By endogenous budding, a migratory larva is produced that leaves the host cell through the peristomial disc and that can infect other peritrichs. 相似文献

Summary This paper reports studies of large scale, 1500 kg/h, SO2-catalysed prehydrolysis of coniferous wood chips, samples then being hydrolyzed by a wood-saccharifying enzyme system followed by fermentation to ethanol in the laboratory. Hemicellulose hydrolysis using SO2 catalyst (prehydrolysis) was found to be more effective than steam alone (autohydrolysis). Prehydrolysis time was 2 min, with steam pressure at 1.2 to 1.7 MPa (175 to 250 psig), and SO2 catalyst 2.0 to 2.6% on dry wood. The amount of sugars recovered upon enzyme saccharification of the prehydrolysed wood was about 70% of the weight of the wood. When these combined hemicellulose and cellulose sugars were fermented by a pentose-fermenting strain of yeast,Pichia stipitis R, 372 L ethanol/tonne of (dry) wood was obtained. 相似文献

The plantar process of the tuber calcanei among pongids and hominids serves as the origin for the superficial head of the flexor digitorum brevis muscle (FDB). In a survey of the soft tissues and osteology of the foot in a diverse number of anthropoid genera, it was found that a large superficial head of the FDB is associated with a large inflated plantar process (heel process). A large FDB with a separate calcaneal origin allows toe flexion independent of foot position. This type of movement allows an animal to reach and grasp or hang by its feet during slow deliberate climbing. The presence of á heel process in anthropoids and in nonprimate mammals is correlated with those animals which are slow climbers or are likely descended from slow-climbing forms. The presence of a heel process in humans and in pongids implies that the common pongid-hominid ancestor was most likely a slow climber. In fossil catarrhines the presence of a heel process can be interpreted either as evidence of slow-climbing behavior or as a heritage feature from a slow-climbing ancestor. 相似文献

Abstract: Paired helical filaments isolated from the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease are composed of a major protein component, the microtubule-associated protein termed τ, together with other nonprotein components, including heparan, a glycosaminoglycan, the more extensively sulfated form of which is heparin. As some of these nonprotein components may modulate the assembly of τ into filamentous structures, we have analyzed the ability of the whole τ protein or some of its fragments to self-assemble in the presence of heparin. Different τ fragments, all of them containing some sequences of the tubulin-binding motif, can assemble in vitro into filaments. We have also found formation of polymers with the 18-residue-long peptide corresponding to the third tubulin-binding motif of τ. This suggests that the ability of τ for self-assembly could be localized in a short sequence of amino acids present in the tubulin-binding repeats of the τ molecule. 相似文献

Propionibacterium acnes is a common skin colonizer and its involvement in central nervous system (CNS) infections may be related with previous neurosurgical procedures. P. acnes was isolated in pure or mixed cultures from ten patients with CNS infections during a 5-year period. The clinical presentation, treatment and outcome were retrospectively reviewed. Nine out of 11 patients had CNS infections after a neurosurgical procedure. The clinical presentation was: brain abscess (five patients), subdural or epidural empyema (four patients) and shunt meningitis (one patient). Three patients had also secondary meningitis. All patients received antibiotic therapy and all abscesses and empyemas were drained. The patient with shunt meningitis cured without catheter removal. Only one patient with a brain abscess by P. acnes died, but several months thereafter and as a consequence of a Gram-negative superinfection. P. acnes is a pathogen for the CNS and infections must be surgically managed under adequate antibiotic treatment. 相似文献
