Acclimation of plant respiration rates (R) to climate warming is highly variable and many results appear contradictory. We tested the recently suggested hypotheses that pre‐existing, long‐lived leaves should exhibit a relatively limited ability for R to acclimate to climate warming, and that acclimation would occur via changes in the short‐term temperature sensitivity of respiration. Seedlings of a subalpine, evergreen tree species (Eucalyptus pauciflora) were grown under naturally fluctuating conditions within its natural distribution. We used a free air temperature increase (FATI) system of infra‐red ceramic lamps to raise night‐time leaf temperatures by 0.3±0.1, 1.3±0.1, and 2.2±0.1 °C above ambient for 1 year. Light‐saturated assimilation rates and plant growth did not change with nocturnal FATI treatments. Leaf R measured at prevailing temperatures did not differ between FATI treatments. Within each FATI treatment, nocturnal leaf R was highly sensitive to artificial temperature changes within minutes, and also correlated strongly with natural nocturnal and seasonal temperature variation. The corresponding values of Q10 of R varied according to time scale of measurements, but did not vary between FATI treatments. Physical disorders are, compared to the general population, more prevalentin people with severe mental illness (SMI). Although this excess morbidityand mortality is largely due to modifiable lifestyle risk factors, the screeningand assessment of physical health aspects remains poor, even in developedcountries. Moreover, specific patient, provider, treatment and system factorsact as barriers to the recognition and to the management of physical diseasesin people with SMI. Psychiatrists can play a pivotal role in the improvementof the physical health of these patients by expanding their task from clinicalpsychiatric care to the monitoring and treatment of crucial physical parameters.At a system level, actions are not easy to realize, especially for developingcountries. However, at an individual level, even simple and very basic monitoringand treatment actions, undertaken by the treating clinician, can already improvethe problem of suboptimal medical care in this population. Adhering to monitoringand treatment guidelines will result in a substantial enhancement of physicalhealth outcomes. Furthermore, psychiatrists can help educate and motivatepeople with SMI to address their suboptimal lifestyle, including smoking,unhealthy diet and lack of exercise. The adoption of the recommendations presentedin this paper across health care systems throughout the world will contributeto a significant improvement in the medical and related psychiatric healthoutcomes of patients with SMI. 相似文献

Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has been identified as a major threat to biodiversity, but field surveys of its effects have rarely focussed on sites which are actively managed to maintain characteristic species. We analysed permanent quadrat data from 106 plots in nature reserves on calcareous grassland sites in the United Kingdom collected during a survey between 1990 and 1993 and compared the data with the results from resurvey of 48 of these plots between 2006 and 2009. N deposition showed no significant spatial association with species richness, species diversity, or the frequency of species adapted to low nutrient conditions in the 1990–1993 dataset. However, temporal analysis showed that N deposition was significantly associated with changes in Shannon diversity and evenness. In plots with high rates of N deposition, there was a decrease in species diversity and evenness, a decline in the frequency of characteristic calcareous grassland species, and a lower number of rare and scarce species. As all sites had active management to maintain a high diversity and characteristic species, our results imply that even focussed management on nature conservation objectives cannot prevent adverse effects of high rates of N deposition. Structural equation modelling was used to compare different causal mechanisms to explain the observed effects. For change in Shannon diversity, direct effects of N deposition were the dominant mechanism and there was an independent effect of change in grazing intensity. In contrast, for change in herb species number, indirect effects on soil acidity, linked to both N and S deposition, were more important than direct effects of N deposition. 相似文献

The objective of the present work was to describe the simultaneous changes in endogenous levels of cytokinins, abscisic acid, indoleacetic acid and ethylene in detached, senescing tobacco (Nicotiana rustica L.) leaves. These measurements were related to changes in chlorophyll contents, 14CO2 fixation and proline contents — three parameters which have been considered to reflect senescence. Effects of exogenous hormonal treatments on these parameters, as well as on endogenous hormonal levels, provided further evidence for the interrelationships between hormones and for their roles in senescence. Starting with actively growing attached leaves and ending with well-advanced senescence in detached leaves, our data indicate a chronological sequence of three hormonal states: (a) cytokinins — high activity, abscisic acid, auxin and ethylene — low contents (actively growing, attached leaves); (b) cytokinins — low activity, abscisic acid — high, auxin and ethylene — low contents (apparent induction of senescence in detached leaves); and (c) cytokinins and abscisic acid — low, auxin and ethylene — high contents (senescence proper in detached leaves). 相似文献

Ethanol is known to cause an acute and profound insulin resistance in man and the rat primarily via effects on glucose utilization. This paper examines the nature of these inhibitory effects on whole-body glucose utilization using the euglycaemic hyperinsulinaemic clamp in the conscious unrestrained rat. We confirm that ethanol infusion causes an acute insulin resistance, the rate of glucose infusion required to maintain euglycaemia (GIR) being decreased markedly by ethanol. To ensure that the GIR is a measure of whole-body glucose disposal, glucose turnover and hepatic glycogen levels were measured. These studies showed that ethanol totally suppressed hepatic glucose production. The reduction in GIR is associated with marked decreases in glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis in most skeletal muscles. In oxidative but not in non-oxidative muscles, the activation of glycogen synthase in response to insulin was decreased by ethanol, suggesting that a defect in glycogen synthase activation may be responsible for the decrease in glycogen synthesis. The basis of the inhibitory effects of ethanol on insulin-stimulated glucose metabolism in muscle is unknown, but may involve membrane-associated impairments in insulin signalling and/or the glucose transport system. 相似文献

Linking measurements of carbonyl sulfide (COS) with those of carbon dioxide (CO2) has a potential in providing a powerful tracer of gross CO2 fluxes between the atmosphere and land plants, a critical element in understanding the response of the land biosphere to global change. A new application of online COS, CO2 and water vapor measurements based on newly designed mid‐infrared (IR) dual quantum cascade laser (QCL) spectrometer measures COS and CO2 (at 2056 cm?1) and water vapor (at 2190 cm?1), with detectors cooled thermoelectrically (at ?43 °C) or with liquid nitrogen (?197 °C) for improved precision. Using the cryogenic detectors with averaging time of 1 s, precision was 50 pmol mol?1, 0.4 μmol mol?1 and 0.01 mmol mol?1 for COS, CO2 and water vapor, respectively (14, 0.2 and 0.003, respectively, for 60 s averaging time). We measured COS concentrations in ambient air, and changes in the rates of COS, CO2 and water vapor exchange of attached leaves in response to changes in light intensity and ambient COS concentrations. The results were consistent with those of nononline gas chromatography–mass spectrometry for COS and IR gas analyzer for CO2 and water vapor, with a high linear correlation for a broad range of concentrations (R2= 0.85 for COS and R2= 1.00 for CO2 and water vapor). The new methodology opens the way for lab and field explorations of COS fluxes as a powerful new tracer for CO2 exchange in the land biosphere. 相似文献
