Two populations of Chaetophora elegans (Roth) C. Agardh and two of Stigeoclonium helveticum Vischer were investigated for microhabitat characteristics and morphological variation in streams of São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. Different patterns of microhabitat distribution were found between species investigated. Populations of C, elegans were distributed under relatively narrow microhabitat conditions (high irradiance, low depth, moderate to high current velocity, rocky substrata and lower values of niche width) and showing little morphometric variation (colony diameter, main axis cell size, and apical branch number), Stigeoclonium helveticum occurred under more diverse microhabitat conditions, revealed by lack of significant difference between sampling units with and without the alga and wider niche width, but also exhibited relatively narrow morphometric variation (plant length, main axis cell and ateral branch cell sizes). The narrow microhabitat conditions and smaller niche width of C. elegans can explain its low abundance (percentage cover) in streams from the area studied as well as in other regions of São Paulo State, In contrast, the wider variation of microhabitat conditions and the higher niche widths of S. helveticum suggest that this green alga is able to grow in a high number of stream ecosystems in the region investigated, ranging from undisturbed to highly disturbed habitats. Thus. the results suggest that S. helveticum is a generalist species.  相似文献

We developed 18 new microsatellite loci for the endangered Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus). Microsatellite loci were screened for variation in two different populations belonging to separate subspecies: the nominal N. p. percnopterus and the Canarian N. p. majorensis. Mean expected heterosygosities were respectively 0.51 and 0.46, while the mean number of alleles per locus was 4.7 and 3.9. These new markers allow further genetic studies for the endangered Canarian Egyptian Vulture.  相似文献

Boron deficiency in coffee trees (Coffea arabica) is widespread, however, responses to B fertilizer have been erratic, depending on the year, method, and time of application. A better understanding of B uptake, distribution, and remobilization within the plant is important in developing a rational fertilization program. Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to study B distribution and remobilization in coffee trees. Boron was provided either in the nutrient solution or sprayed on the leaves of trees grown under adequate or transient B deficiency. There was clear evidence for B translocation via symplast (remobilization) to coffee grains, even in well-nourished plants. When 10B was present in the nutrient solution during most part of fruit filling, from 33 to 40% of the B found in coffee fruits was absorbed during this period, depending on the timing and duration of the B deficiency treatment. In the field, when B was sprayed once on the leaves, around 4% of the fruit B was derived from the foliar fertilizer. Boron remobilization within coffee trees is limited in well nourished plants, but it can be significant during periods of temporary B deficiency in plants otherwise well nourished with B. The implications of these findings for B fertilization practice, are discussed.  相似文献

  1. Habitat complexity is thought to play an important role in various ecological communities, but its role under variable natural conditions is not well understood, particularly in lotic habitats where the complexity of the substratum influences the diversity and abundance of the benthic community.
  2. We investigated the effects of the habitat complexity of the substratum, as represented by fractal structure, on the establishment of stream macroalgae. We also analysed the influence of hydraulic conditions associated with variations in the fractal dimension of the substratum. We hypothesised that habitats with higher surface complexity would have higher macroalgal abundance and that hydraulic conditions would affect macroalgal establishment differently on surfaces of differing complexity.
  3. We designed a field experiment to elucidate the role of habitat complexity (represented by the fractal dimension and density of roughness elements) and consequent hydraulic conditions (assessed by the Reynolds number and drag forces) on algal growth. Sterile artificial substrata with five levels of complexity were placed in four unshaded streams. After 60 days of complete submergence, the substrata were removed from the streams, and the per cent cover of macroalgae was measured.
  4. We used a principal components analysis (PCA) to reduce the dimensionality and collinearity among our variables (fractal dimension, density of roughness elements, Reynolds number and drag force) and summarise them adequately. Axis 1 (PC1) values were used in a linear model to assess the relationship between the variables and macroalgal cover.
  5. PC1 explained 82.2% of the variability in substratum complexity and hydraulic condition. The fractal dimension and density of the roughness elements were negatively related with PC1, whereas the Reynolds number and drag force were related positively. Hydraulic conditions differed among each level of complexity, with the Reynolds number and drag force decreasing with increasing complexity. Macroalgal cover increased on surfaces with lower turbulence and drag force, indicating that less aggressive conditions are suitable for macroalgal colonisation. Additionally, the establishment of macroalgae was greatest on the leading edge of flat‐top ridges, where the water velocity slows and the current changes direction.
  6. Habitat complexity and hydraulic conditions play an important role in the establishment of macroalgae in streams and could explain their naturally patchy distribution.

Life within the soil is vital for maintaining life on Earth due to the numerous ecosystem services that it provides. However, there is evidence that pressures on the soil biota are increasing which may undermine some of these ecosystem services. Current levels of belowground biodiversity are relatively poorly known, and so no benchmark exists by which to measure possible future losses of biodiversity. Furthermore, the relative risk that each type of anthropogenic pressures places on the soil biota remains unclear. Potential threats to soil biodiversity were calculated through the use of a composite score produced from data collected from 20 international experts using the budget allocation methodology. This allowed relative weightings to be given to each of the identified pressures for which data were available in the European Soil Data Centre (ESDC). A total of seven different indicators were used for calculating the composite scores. These data were applied through a model using ArcGIS to produce a spatial analysis of composite pressures on soil biodiversity at the European scale. The model highlights the variation in the composite result of the potential threats to soil biodiversity. A sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the intensity of land exploitation, both in terms of agriculture and use intensity, as well as in terms of land‐use dynamics, were the main factors applying pressure on soil biodiversity. It is important to note that the model should not be viewed as an estimate of the current level of soil biodiversity in Europe, but as an estimate of pressures that are currently being exerted. The results obtained should be seen as a starting point for further investigation on this relatively unknown issue and demonstrate the utility of this type of model which may be applied to other regions and scales.  相似文献

A hyperadrenergic state is a seminal aspect of chronic heart failure. Also, "Takotsubo stress cardiomyopathy," is associated with increased plasma catecholamine levels. The mechanisms of myocyte damage secondary to excess catecholamine exposure as well as the consequence of this neurohumoral burst on cardiac stem cells (CSCs) are unknown. Cardiomyocytes and CSCs were exposed to high doses of isoproterenol (ISO), in vivo and in vitro. Male Wistar rats received a single injection of ISO (5 mg kg-1) and were sacrificed 1, 3, and 6 days later. In comparison with controls, LV function was impaired in rats 1 day after ISO and started to improve at 3 days. The fraction of dead myocytes peaked 1 day after ISO and decreased thereafter. ISO administration resulted in significant ryanodine receptor 2 (RyR2) hyperphosphorylation and RyR2-calstabin dissociation. JTV519, a RyR2 stabilizer, prevented the ISO-induced death of adult myocytes in vitro. In contrast, CSCs were resistant to the acute neurohumoral overload. Indeed, CSCs expressed a decreased and inverted complement of beta1/beta2-adrenoreceptors and absence of RyR2, which may explain their survival to ISO insult. Thus, a single injection of ISO causes diffuse myocyte death through Ca2+ leakage secondary to the acutely dysfunctional RyR2. CSCs are resistant to the noxious effects of an acute hyperadrenergic state and through their activation participate in the response to the ISO-induced myocardial injury. The latter could contribute to the ability of the myocardium to rapidly recover from acute hyperadrenergic damage.  相似文献

Ceramide has been suggested as an important mediator of apoptosis. In HT-29 colorectal cancer cells increased ceramide levels, induced by exogenous N-acetylsphingosine (NAS, also known as C2-ceramide) or by 1-phenyl-2-(decanoylamino)-3-morpholino-1-propanol (PDMP), inhibited the transport and processing of cathepsin D (CD), a lysosomal protease implicated in apoptosis of tumour cells. C2-dihydroceramide (DH-C2), an inactive analogue of NAS, had no effect on CD transport and maturation. The treatment with either NAS or PDMP was revealed to be cytotoxic for HT-29 cells and led to cell death with classical features of apoptosis. Morphological signs of apoptosis and DNA fragmentation became apparent only between 24 and 48 h of incubation and poly(ADP ribose)-polymerase cleavage, a hallmark of caspase 3 activity, occurred no earlier than 8 h from incubation. Secretion of proCD was almost abolished and the formation of double-chain mature CD was reduced and delayed by NAS, whereas PDMP largely inhibited the lysosomal targeting and maturation of proCD. NAS- and PDMP-induced alteration of proCD transport and maturation were apparent already 2 h after incubation with the drugs, which is much earlier than when classical biochemical and morphological evidence of apoptosis could be detected. These data indicate that alteration of CD (and possibly of other glycoproteins) transport along the secretory pathway due to increased levels of cell-associated ceramide is an early event in cells undergoing apoptosis.  相似文献
