On the Estimation of Mean Infecundable Period Following Childbirth (Using Information on Lactation Period)—A Competing Risk Theory Approach

The methodological paper envisages to provide two measures of infecundable period following childbirth; one based on the lactation period when expiry period of amenorrhoea (P.P.A.) follows the same immediately. The other one is based on P.P.A. when expiry of P.P.A. precedes the lactation period. The weighted average of the two measures (duly weighted by the probabilities of both the events) has been given as the estimate of the mean infecundable period. A competing risk oriented approach is adopted to evolve the methodology.     

Anemia in experimental visceral leishmaniasis in hamsters.

Experimental infection of hamsters with Leishmania donovani caused visceral leishmaniasis in which hematological changes occurred. The infected hamsters were anemic and reticulocyte counts were high. No significant change in the serum erythropoietin level was noted. Red cell membrane Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase and acetylcholinesterase activities increased. Osmotic fragility of the erythrocytes from infected animals increased. The level of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate of the red cells increased with the degree of anemia.     

The stimulation of collagenase production in rabbit articular chondrocytes by interleukin-1 is increased by collagens

Osteoarthritis is characterized by a loss of articular cartilage due at least in part to the action of degradative enzymes secreted by chondrocytes. We have investigated the effect of type II collagen from cartilage and interleukin 1 on collagenase production in cultures of rabbit articular chondrocytes. Interleukin 1 alone stimulated the chondrocytes to secrete collagenase but this response was increased as much as fivefold by the addition of rabbit type II collagen. Bovine type II and chick type I collagens were also stimulatory. The native form of the collagens was not required since denatured collagens and purified chick type II alpha chains were effective. The observed effects of collagens and interleukin 1 may contribute to the progressive nature of osteoarthritis.     

Nitrogen assimilation in opaque and normal sorghum during grain development

Activity of key nitrogen assimilating enzymes was studied in developing grains of high-lysine opaque sorghum P-721 and normal sorghum CSV-5. The higher percentage of protein in opaque sorghum was mainly due to lower starch content since protein per grain was less than in CSV-5. During grain development, albufn and globulin decreased while prolafne and glutelin increased. Prolafne content in CSV-5 was higher than in opaque sorghum. Average nitrate reductase activity in flag and long leaf were similar in both the varieties. The nitrate reductase activity decreased during grain development. Glutamate dehydrogenase activity was higher during early development and lower at later stages in opaque sorghum than in CSV-5. Glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase activity was higher and glutamine synthetase lower in opaque sorghum than in CSV-5 grains during development. Glutamate synthase activity was higher in opaque sorghum up to day 20 and lower thereafter than in CSV-5. It is suggested that reduced activities of glutamine synthetase as well as glutamate synthase in opaque sorghum as compared to CSV-5 during later stages of development may restrict protein accumulation in the former.

Effect of short-and long-term exposure to low environmental temperature on brain regional GABA metabolism

Single exposure of adult male rats to low environmental temperature (LET, 12 ± 0.5°C) for 2 h significantly increased the hypothalamic and striatal GABA levels without affecting those in other regions of brain. The activity of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) was elevated in hypothalamus (H) and corpus striatum (CS) under these conditions. GABA accumulation rate (measured with ethanolamine-O-sulfate, an inhibitor of GABA-transaminase) was also increased in both H and CS of rats exposed to LET for 2 h. Unlike after a single exposure, the repeated exposure (2 h/day) for 7, 15, and 30 onsecutive days did not change the hypothalamic GABA metabolism. No change in GABA metabolism was observed in CS when rats were repeatedly exposed to LET for 7 consecutive days. Prolongation of repeated exposure to LET (2 h/day) for 15 and 30 consecutive days decreased the striatal GABA level and increased the activity of GABA-transaminase, although GAD activity was not altered under these conditions. These results suggest that single exposure to LET accelerates GABA synthesis and may reduce the GABAergic activity in both H and CS; whereas repeated exposure to LET for 15 or 30 consecutive days enhances GABAergic activity with the stimulation of GABA utilization only in CS without affecting its synthesizing process. Thus, it may be suggested that the hypothalamic and striatal GABA system may play a characteristic role in response to short-and long-term exposure to LET.     

The role of alpha-2u-globulin in corticosteroidogenesis in male rats

Administration of estradiol-17 beta for 7 days to the adult male rat results in adrenal hyperplasia, decreased serum corticosterone along with elevation in serum ACTH and inhibition of adrenal 5-ene-3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity (5-ene-3 beta-HSD). Treatment with alpha 2u-globulin for following 14 days of estrogen-treated rats reversed the effects of estrogen while in normal rats alpha 2u-globulin treatment increased adrenal 5-ene-3 beta-HSD activity and serum corticosterone level while causing a fall in serum ACTH. It is concluded that alpha 2u-globulin may play a role in ACTH secretion by inducing corticosterone synthesis.
