Improvement of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) during pregnancy has been causatively associated with increased galactosylation of immunoglobulin G (IgG) N-glycans. Peptoids of alpha- and beta-peptides (alpha- and beta-peptoids) can be obtained by shifting the amino acid side chains from the backbone carbon atoms of the monomer constituents to the peptide nitrogen atoms. They are, therefore, N-substituted poly-glycines and poly-beta-alanines, respectively. Due to the substituted nitrogen atoms, the ability for hydrogen bond formation between peptide bonds gets lost. It may be very interesting to see whether such non-natural oligomers could be regarded as foldamers, which fold into definite backbone conformers. In this paper, we provide a complete overview on helix formation in alpha- and beta-peptoids on the basis of systematic theoretical conformational analyses employing the methods of ab initio molecular orbital (MO) theory. It can be shown that the alpha- and beta-peptoid structures form helical structures with both trans and cis peptide bonds despite the missing hydrogen bonds. Obviously, the conformational properties of the backbone are more important for folding than the possibility of hydrogen bonding. There are close relationships between the helices of alpha-peptoids and poly-glycine and poly-proline helices of alpha-peptides, whereas the helices of beta-peptoids correspond to the well-known helical structures of beta-peptides as, for instance, the 3(1)-helix of beta-peptides with 14-membered hydrogen-bonded rings. Thus, alpha- and beta-peptoids enrich the field of foldamers and may be used as useful tools in peptide and protein design.  相似文献

Background  

Assortative mating patterns for mate quality traits like body size are often observed in nature. However, the underlying mechanisms that cause assortative mating patterns are less well known. Sexual selection is one important explanation for assortment, suggesting that i) one (usually the female) or both sexes could show preferences for mates of similar size or ii) mutual mate choice could resolve sexual conflict over quality traits into assortment. We tested these hypotheses experimentally in the socially monogamous cichlid fish Pelvicachromis taeniatus, in which mate choice is mutual.  相似文献

The life cycle of the red alga Porphyra purpurea alternates between two morphologically distinct phases: a shell-boring, filamentous sporophyte and a free-living, foliose gametophyte. From a subtracted cDNA library enriched for sporophyte-specific sequences, we isolated a cDNA encoding an unusual elongation factor 1 (EF-1) that is expressed only in the sporophyte. A second EF-1 gene that is expressed equally in the sporophyte and the gametophyte was isolated from a genomic library. These are the only EF-1 genes detectable in P. purpurea. The constitutively expressed gene encodes and EF-1 very similar to those of most eukaryotes. However, the sporophyte-specific EF-1 is one of the most divergent yet described, with nine insertions or deletions ranging in size from 1 to 26 amino acids. This is the first report of a developmental stage-specific EF-1 outside of the animal kingdom and suggests a fundamental role for EF-1 in the developmental process.  相似文献

Wild barley, Hordeum vulgare spp. spontaneum, has a wider genetic diversity than its cultivated progeny, Hordeum vulgare spp. vulgare. Osmotic stress leads to a series of different responses in wild barley seminal roots, ranging from no changes in suberization to enhanced endodermal suberization of certain zones and the formation of a suberized exodermis, which was not observed in the modern cultivars studied so far. Further, as a response to osmotic stress, the hydraulic conductivity of roots was not affected in wild barley, but it was 2.5-fold reduced in cultivated barley. In both subspecies, osmotic adjustment by increasing proline concentration and decreasing osmotic potential in roots was observed. RNA-sequencing indicated that the regulation of suberin biosynthesis and water transport via aquaporins were different between wild and cultivated barley. These results indicate that wild barley uses different strategies to cope with osmotic stress compared with cultivated barley. Thus, it seems that wild barley is better adapted to cope with osmotic stress by maintaining a significantly higher hydraulic conductivity of roots during water deficit.  相似文献

Four choice experiments were conducted with both sexes of the cichlid Pelvicachromis taeniatus using computer-manipulated stimuli of digital images differing in movement, body shape or colouration. The results show that computer animations can be useful and flexible tools in studying preferences of a cichlid with complex and variable preferences for different visual cues.  相似文献
