Random location of nucleosomes on genes for 5 S rRNA.

The location of nucleosomes on genes for 5 S rRNA in rat liver was determined by the preparation of nucleosome core DNA fragments, hybridization with 5 S rRNA, RNase digestion, and gel electrophoresis. The resulting size distribution of RNA fragments was essentially the same as that found when the experiment was carried out with random DNA fragments.     

Regulation of the biosynthesis of aminoacyl-transfer ribonucleic acid synthetases and of transfer ribonucleic acid in Escherichia coli. V. Mutants with increased levels of valyl-transfer ribonucleic acid synthetase.

Spontaneous revertants of a temperature-sensitive Escherichia coli strain harboring a thermolabile valyl-transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA) synthetase were selected for growth at 40 degrees C. Of these, a large number still contain the thermolabile valyl-tRNA synthetase. Three of these revertants contained an increased level of the thermolabile enzyme. The genetic locus, valX, responsible for the enzyme overproduction, is adjacent to the structural gene, valS, of valyl-tRNA synthetase. Determination (by radioimmunoassay) of the turnover rates of valyl-tRNA synthetase showed that the increased level of valyl-tRNA synthetase is due to new enzyme synthesis rather than decreased rates of protein degradation.     

Microbiological quality of frozen breaded fish and shellfish products.

A survey was made of the microbiological quality of seven frozen, breaded, precooked fish and shellfish products and of frozen, breaded, uncooked shrimp at the retail level. Geometric mean aerobic plate counts per gram (and number of units examined) were as follows: fish sticks, 8,300 (1,539); fish cakes, 5,600 (1,378); crab cakes, 4,900 (1,226); scallops, 1,700 (1,392); clams, 450 (1,384); haddock, 15,000 (1,306); fish in fish and chips dinner, 7,200 (1,485); and uncooked shrimp, 220,000 (1,462). Geometric mean coliform, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus counts for all eight products ranged from 1 to 10/g.     

Dermal and intravascular Langerhans cells at sites of passively induced allergic contact sensitivity.

In order to further define the role of Langerhans cells in contact allergic reactions, passive transfer studies were done in guinea pigs using 2,4-dinitro-1-chlorobenzene (DNCB)-sensitive donor cells. Langerhans cells were found in the lumen of dermal vessels resembling lymphatics at 2, 3, 15, and 48 hr after DNCB challenge. In contrast to the previously reported findings in actively sensitized guinea pigs, the changes involving Langerhans cells in passively sensitized guinea pigs were mainly noted in the dermis. These consisted of increased numbers of Langerhans cells and of mononuclear cells apposed to Langerhans cells 3 or more hours after challenge with DNCB. The increased Langerhans cell population in the dermis and the presence of Langerhans cells in dermal vessels in specifically challenged sites in adoptive immune reactions furnishes further support for a significant role of Langerhans cells in the interaction between antigen and sensitized cells.     

Self-assembly and differentiation as models of computability

An idealization of chemical combination is formulated as a model of computability, and it is shown that this model has universal computational power just in case assembly has at least two-dimensional space in which to occur. It is also shown that this model, under reinterpretation, corresponds to a cellular automaton in which growth occurs by differentiation only (i.e., the state into which any cell is born is thereadfter fixed). Hence this latter model of growth is also computationally universal.

The vast majority of physicians are honest and ethical, fraud investigators say, but some are being duped as patients scheme to cheat the insurance industry. In one sensational auto-insurance-fraud case, some Ontario physicians are being investigated about possible involvement in a self-referral scheme.
