Summary Differentiation of spermatids to mature spermatozoa in the bryozoan Tubulipora liliacea was studied by transmission electron microscopy. The spermatozoon of Tubulipora is of a filiform, modified type, and has evolved from the primitive type as an adaptation to a specialized biology of fertilization. The head of the spermatozoon consists of a small, conical acrosome capping an elongated, cylindrical, anteriorly tapering nucleus. A basal invagination in the nucleus contains the proximal portion of the axoneme and a dense attachment matrix. The flagellar axoneme has the typical 9+2 structure. Four elongated rodshaped mitochondria with typical cristae surround the axoneme in the cylindrical middle piece. Granular electron-dense material is accumulated in the form of four columns alternating with four long cylindrical mitochondria. The mitochondrial middle piece is separated externally from the tail region by an involution of the plasma membrane. The tail region contains a cytoplasmic sheath with accessory fibers surrounding the axoneme. Nine outer, coarse fibers extend posteriorly paralleling the nine doublets of the axoneme. The coarse fibers develop from electron-dense plate-like structures associated with the doublets of the axoneme. A characteristic feature in spermiogenesis is that spermatozoa develop in tetrads. There seem to be significant differences in spermatozoan ultrastructure between the three bryozoan classes Stenolaemata, Gymnolaemata, and Phylactolaemata. Summary Photo-CIDNP studies were performed on two protein fragments that both contain the double zinc-finger DNA-binding domain of the glucocorticoid receptor. In the absence of DNA, Tyr452 and Tyr474 are polarised in both fragments while Tyr497 is not. Addition of a palindromic glucocorticoid response element (GRE) results in the suppression of Tyr474 polarization while the polarization of Tyr452 is unaffected. The same result is observed upon adding a half GRE to the protein fragment indicating that the suppression of Tyr474 polarization is not due to protein-protein contacts but to interaction with DNA.  相似文献

Peroxiredoxins (Prx) are thiol-dependent antioxidants containing one (1-cysteine [-Cys]) or two (2-Cys) conserved Cys residues that protect lipids, enzymes, and DNA against reactive oxygen species. In plants, the 1-Cys Prxs are highly expressed during late seed development, and the expression pattern is dormancy related in mature seeds. We have expressed the Arabidopsis 1-Cys Prx AtPER1 in Escherichia coli and show that this protein has antioxidant activity in vitro and protects E. coli in vivo against the toxic oxidant cumene hydroperoxide. Although some 1-Cys Prxs are targeted to the nucleus, a green fluorescent protein-AtPER1 fusion protein was also localized to the cytoplasm in an onion epidermis subcellular localization assay. It has been proposed that seed Prxs are involved in maintenance of dormancy and/or protect the embryo and aleurone layer surviving desiccation against damage caused by reactive oxygen species. These hypotheses were tested using transgenic Arabidopsis lines overexpressing the barley (Hordeum vulgare) 1-Cys PER1 protein and lines with reduced levels of AtPER1 due to antisensing or RNA interference. We found no correlation between Prx levels and the duration of the after-ripening period required before germination. Thus, Prxs are unlikely to contribute to maintenance of dormancy. RNA interference lines almost devoid of AtPER1 protein developed and germinated normally under standard growth room conditions. However, seeds from lines overexpressing PER1 were less inclined to germinate than wild-type seeds in the presence of NaCl, mannitol, and methyl viologen, suggesting that Prx can sense harsh environmental surroundings and play a part in the inhibition of germination under unfavorable conditions.  相似文献

Wealth and status covary with lifetime reproductive success in preindustrial human populations. Local ecology is likely to modify this association, but details of this presumed relationship are not yet known. We sought to determine whether local ecology modifies the relationship between status and fitness (number of grandchildren). Our approach to the problem was to measure variation in fitness relative to status (landless or with land) and to local ecology (inland versus coastal communities). We also analyzed life history traits that might explain observed variations in fitness. Our results confirm previous findings that both status (landless=9.9 vs. with land=16.5) and ecology (inland=12.3 vs. coast=14.1) affect the number of grandchildren produced by a female in pre-industrial society. We also found that the differences in number of children between the status groups were less pronounced on the coast (landless=12.0 vs. with land=16.1) than inland (landless=7.8 vs. with land=16.8). Our findings are novel because they suggest that the fitness consequences of human status may depend on details of local ecology. We discuss four different mechanisms that could account for these fitness differences: (1) differential reproductive rate of mothers, (2) differential marriage rate of children (3) differential survival rate of children, and (4) different social practices (breastfeeding, inheritance of property and diet).  相似文献

Bi-modal vertical distribution of Paraeuchaeta norvegica duringlate autumn was observed in a Norwegian fjord in three differentyears, and hence seems to be a recurring phenomenon. Data from 16-year-old Finnish twin pairs were used to estimate familial effects on religiosity and the modification of those effects by sex and residential region. The sample of 2265 twin boys and 2521 twin girls formed 779 monozygotic and 1614 dizygotic pairs, 785 of the same sex and 829 of opposite sex. We compared religiosity scores of twins living in more rural and traditional northern Finland with those living in the more urban and secular southern region. Girls had higher religiosity scores than did boys, and twins living in northern Finland had higher religiosity scores than those resident in southern Finland. Correlations for monozygotic twins were slightly higher than those for dizygotic twins, and covariance modeling found modest heritability of religiosity [11% (95% CI 0-24) for girls; 22% (95% CI 6-38) for boys], and substantial shared environmental effects [60% (95% CI 49-69) and 45% (95% CI 31-57)] among girls and boys, respectively. The correlation between shared environmental effects in boys and girls was estimated to be 0.84 (95% CI 0.73-0.99). In analyses distinguishing region of residence, girls living in southern Finland were found to have significantly higher unshared environmental effects than girls in northern Finland, while boys living in the urban south appeared to have lower shared environmental effects, and higher additive genetic effects, than boys living in the rural north.  相似文献

Investigations were carried out in six forest types in areas surrounding two Swedish nuclear power plants (Forsmark and Laxemar). The aim of the investigation was to determine the spatial distribution of fine-root biomass (live), necromass (dead) and standing crop (live + dead) and to test the use of the live/dead ratio as a vitality criterion. Soil cores were taken to depths with insignificant amounts of roots. The total amount of fine-root biomass (<1 mm in diameter) of tree species in the soil profile was 267, 317 and 235 g m?2 for the Forsmark and 137, 371 and 50 g m?2 for the Laxemar sites. The related necromass was 119, 226 and 184 g m?2 and 87, 245 and 271 g m?2. The biomass in the humus layer was 47, 7 and 48% for the Forsmark and 34, 26 and 7% for the Laxemar sites, as a percentage of the total live + dead fine roots in the soil profile. The related necromass in the humus layer was 13, 2 and 30% for the Forsmark and 13, 2 and 28% for the Laxemar sites. The live/dead ratio decreased with depth for both tree— and field-layer species and seems to be a most powerful vitality criterion of fine roots.  相似文献

We report the first study with the aim to estimate heritability in a wild population, a nest box breeding population of blue tits. We estimated heritability as well as genetic and phenotypic correlations of resting metabolic rate (RMR), body mass and tarsus length with an animal model based on data from a split cross‐fostering experiment with brood size manipulations. RMR and body mass, but not tarsus length, showed significant levels of explained variation but for different underlying reasons. In body mass, the contribution to the explained variation is mainly because of a strong brood effect, while in RMR it is mainly because of a high heritability. The additive variance in RMR was significant and the heritability was estimated to 0.59. The estimates of heritability of body mass (0.08) and tarsus length (0.00) were both low and based on nonsignificant additive variances. Thus, given the low heritability (and additive variances) in body mass and tarsus length the potential for direct selection on RMR independent of the two traits is high in this population. However, the strong phenotypic correlation between RMR and mass (0.643 ± 0.079) was partly accounted for by a potentially strong, although highly uncertain, genetic correlation (1.178 ± 0.456) between the two traits. This indicates that the additive variance of body mass, although low, might still somewhat constrain the independent evolvability of RMR.  相似文献
