Negative priming (NP) was examined under a new paradigm wherein a target and distractors were temporally separated using rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP). The results from the two experiments revealed that (a) NP was robust under RSVP, such that the responses to a target were slower when the target served as a distractor in a previous trial than when it did not; (b) NP was found regardless of whether the distractors appeared before or after the targets; and (c) NP was stronger when the distractor was more distinctive. These findings are generally similar to those on NP in the spatial search task. The implications for the processes causing NP under RSVP are discussed in the current paper.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Recognizing an object is improved by recent experience with that object even if one cannot recall seeing the object. This perceptual facilitation as a result of previous experience is called priming. In neuroimaging studies, priming is often associated with a decrease in activation in brain regions involved in object recognition. It is thought that this occurs because priming causes a sharpening of object representations which leads to more efficient processing and, consequently, a reduction in neural activity. Recent evidence has suggested, however, that the apparent effect of priming on brain activation may vary as a function of whether the neural activity is measured before or after recognition has taken place. RESULTS: Using a gradual 'unmasking' technique, we presented primed and non-primed objects to subjects, and measured activation time courses using high-field functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). As the objects were slowly revealed, but before recognition had occurred, activation increased from baseline level to a peak that corresponded in time to the subjects' behavioural recognition responses. The activation peak for primed objects occurred sooner than the peak for non-primed objects, and subjects responded sooner when presented with a primed object than with a non-primed object. During this pre-recognition phase, primed objects produced more activation than non-primed objects. After recognition, activation declined rapidly for both primed and non-primed objects, but now activation was lower for the primed objects. CONCLUSIONS: Priming did not produce a general decrease in activation in the brain regions involved in object recognition but, instead, produced a shift in the time of peak activation that corresponded to the shift in time seen in the subjects' behavioural recognition performance.  相似文献

The influence of He-Ne (lambda = 632.8 nm) laser irradiation on the functional activity of leucocytes was investigated. The functional activity of leucocytes irradiated in the presence of plasma with phthalocyanine raised. Irradiation of leucocytes without plasma had no influence on the chemiluminescent response of the blood cells. An increase in the concentration of phthalocyanine in plasma first led to an increase and then a decrease in the functional activity of the leucocytes. Similar results were obtained for the case of endogenous porphyrins in plasma. These results make it possible to consider the influence of laser irradiation on the leucocytes' functional activity as the priming. The basic concepts of the free-radical mechanism of laser therapy were formulated.  相似文献

The effects of priming mouse cells with interferon on the production of interferon and its mRNA were investigated. Interferon-treated (primed) mouse L929 cells produce 3 to 10 times more interferon than do nonprimed cells following induction with Newcastle disease virus. Interferon appears 2 to 4 h sooner in the primed cultures than in nonprimed cultures and interferon production by primed cells becomes resistant to inhibition by actinomycin D about 4 h sooner than interferon production in nonprimed cells. Interferon mRNA is detected in primed-induced cells about 2 h earlier than in nonprimed-induced cells. It reaches peak levels about 2 to 4 earlier in primed cells, but it also disappears sooner in primed cells. The total amounts of interferon mRNA isolated from primed-induced cells and nonprimed-induced cells were indistinguishable, by the methods utilized. Therefore, although primed cells can produce significantly more interferon and make interferon mRNA sooner than nonprimed cells, the total amount of interferon mRNA produced is apparently not increased, nor is its half-life prolonged in primed cells. Thus, enhanced interferon production in primed cells may result from enhanced efficiency of translation of interferon mRNA in the primed cells.  相似文献

Effects of osmotic priming and ageing on onion seed germination   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Onion seeds were osmotically primed in polyethylene glycol solution (342 g/kg water) either for 14 days before accelerated ageing at 40°C. 18% m.c. for 0, 24, 48, 72 or 96 h, or for 10, 14 or 17 days after ageing. Priming improved the rate of germination compared with non-primed seed. Priming before ageing delayed the loss of viability due to ageing, but priming after ageing had no effect on viability. Primed and dried onion seed was stored for 18 months at 10°C, 9% m.c. with no effect on viability; improvements in germination rate due to priming were maintained over the storage period. Conductivity measurements of seed leachates were not a consistently reliable indicator of germination performance.  相似文献

This study reports a cross-modal, olfactory/visual event related potential (ERP) using odours as olfactory primes. The results show a difference in the ERP waveform for the N400 waveform when a visual image does not match the priming odour. An N400 peak was produced for both the matched and mismatched conditions but the peaks were significantly more negative for the mismatched condition. By the use of non-food odours this study extends an earlier finding by Grigor, who, using the same ERP paradigm, obtained similar results for food odours and photographs of food.  相似文献

Reward-related mesolimbic dopamine is thought to play an important role in guiding animal behaviour, biasing approach towards potentially beneficial environmental stimuli and away from objects unlikely to garner positive outcome. This is considered to result in part from an impact on perceptual and attentional processes: dopamine initiates a series of cognitive events that result in the priming of reward-associated perceptual features. We have provided behavioural and electrophysiological evidence that this mechanism guides human vision in search, an effect we refer to as reward priming. We have also demonstrated that there is substantial individual variability in this effect. Here we show that behavioural differences in reward priming are predicted remarkably well by a personality index that captures the degree to which a person's behaviour is driven by reward outcome. Participants with reward-seeking personalities are found to be those who allocate visual resources to objects characterized by reward-associated visual features. These results add to a rapidly developing literature demonstrating the crucial role reward plays in attentional control. They additionally illustrate the striking impact personality traits can have on low-level cognitive processes like perception and selective attention.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that changes in visual processing in perihand space are limited to the area around the right hand, at least in right-handers. One explanation for these findings is that perception is altered at locations where action is more likely to occur. To test this notion, we asked both right- and left-handers to perform an unspeeded visual discrimination task under four hand-position configurations: Left hand, right hand, both hands, or no hands near the display. Compared to the no-hands (control) condition, visual sensitivity (d') was higher in the dominant-hand condition for right-handers and higher in the dominant- as well as the non-dominant hand condition for left-handers. When both hands were near the display, sensitivity was similar to that in the dominant-hand condition for right-handers and to that in the non-dominant hand condition for left-handers. This shows that performance differed between the two handedness groups when their non-dominant hand was near the display (both alone and accompanied by their dominant hand). Thus, the pattern for left-handers did not correspond to a mirror image of the pattern for right-handers. In line with studies on bimanual action control, visual processing in perihand space seems to be determined by the different ways in which left- and right-handers use their hands.  相似文献

Background aimsMesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are a multipotent cell population of clinical interest because of their ability to migrate to injury and tumor sites, where they may participate in tissue repair and modulation of immune response. Although the processes regulating MSC function are incompletely understood, it has been shown that stimulation of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) can alter MSC activity. More specifically, it has been reported that human bone marrow-derived MSCs can be “polarized” by TLR priming into contrasting immunomodulatory functions, with opposite (supportive or suppressive) roles in tumor progression and inflammation. Adipose-derived MSCs (ASCs) represent a promising alternative MSC subpopulation for therapeutic development because of their relative ease of isolation and higher abundance compared with their bone marrow-derived counterparts; however, the polarization of ASCs remains unreported.MethodsIn this study, we evaluated the phenotypic and functional consequences of short-term, low-level stimulation of ASCs with TLR3 and TLR4 agonists.ResultsIn these assays, we identified transient gene expression changes resembling the reported pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory MSC phenotypes. Furthermore, these priming strategies led to changes in the functional properties of ASCs, affecting their ability to migrate and modulate immune-mediated responses to prostate cancer cells in vitro.ConclusionsTLR3 stimulation significantly decreased ASC migration, and TLR4 stimulation increased ASC immune-mediated killing potential against prostate cancer cells.  相似文献

Four pigeons were previously trained [Lazareva, O.F., Freiburger, K.L., Wasserman, E.A., 2004. Pigeons concurrently categorize photographs at both basic and superordinate levels. Psychon. Bull. Rev. 11, 1111-1117] to classify color photographs into either their proper basic-level category (cars, chairs, flowers, or people) or a superordinate-level category (nominally natural or artificial). In Experiment 1, the same pigeons were shown either reflected or inverted versions of the training stimuli. Reflection had no effect on pigeons' classification behavior, whereas inversion impaired discrimination of all stimulus categories, except flowers, on the basic-level and superordinate-level tasks. Pixel matching analysis revealed that pattern matching played at most a minor role in the birds' categorization behavior. In Experiment 2, the pigeons were shown test stimuli that were either blurred or quartered and scrambled. Blurring impaired discrimination of cars, but had no effect on discrimination of people and flowers; scrambling impaired discrimination of people and flowers leaving discrimination of cars and chairs unaffected. These results suggest that categorization of flowers and people may be controlled primarily by the overall shape of the object rather than by local features, whereas categorization of cars and chairs may rely primarily on local features rather than the overall shape of the object.  相似文献

Averaged evoked potentials (AEP) to verbal (letters) and nonverbal (random shapes) stimuli exposed in the left and right visual fields were registered in healthy subjects with normal vision. Analysis of the later AEP latencies pointed to asymmetry in the temporal parameters of the interhemispheric interaction. The late AEP latency is shorter in the right hemisphere than in the left hemisphere. The difference is more pronounced in responses to nonverbal stimuli. The earlier development of the evoked potential in the right hemisphere (or the later one in the left hemisphere) accounts for the interhemispheric difference in the temporal parameters of the late AEP components. Comparison of the latency of the component P300 to verbal and nonverbal stimuli presented in the ipsilateral or the contralateral visual fields reveals a transfer of the results of the cortical processing of visual information in the course of interhemispheric interaction.  相似文献

Ovariectomized mice were primed for 2 days with estradiol and/or actinomycin D. In order to evaluate the effects of these treatments on endometrial cell proliferation, colchicine and [3H]-thymidine were administered shortly before killing groups of animals at days 4 and 5 after priming (the latter groups received 500 micrograms progesterone plus 10 ng estradiol 24 h before killing). The same priming treatments were administered 3 days before starting hormonal treatment eliciting uterine sensitivity to decidualization (incuded by intrauterine oil injection). The comparison of labeling and mitotic indices and of decidual tissue weights between experimental groups showed that under such conditions: (1) actinomycin D only partly inhibits the effects of estrogen priming: the increase in cell division obtained on day 4 after priming remains unchanged in all three endometrial components while the increase in stromal mitotic activity at day 5 and further decidual growth are reduced, (2) since the inhibition rate of these parameters is greater in non-primed than in primed animals, it appears that estrogen priming counteracts the antagonistic action of actinomycin D.  相似文献

The sequence (a) priming flash, (b) dark interval, and (c) red light induces a long-lasting afterdepolarization (PDA) in Balanus photoreceptors. The inward flow of membrane current associated with the decay of PDA was independent of red test flashes, provided that PDA had plateaued at a particular intensity. The influence of wavelength and duration of the priming flash and their interaction with the dark interval were investigated. Increasing the duration of the priming flash produced a systematic increase in PDA duration. The dark interval plays a crucial role in PDA induction. The priming flash duration and the dark interval were reciprocally related, i.e, short flashes followed by long dark intervals induced as much PDA as long priming flashes followed by short dark intervals. The action spectrum for the priming flash was found to correspond to that of the primary photopigment (VP537).  相似文献

Summary. In order to evaluate the effects of dietary taurine supplementation on visual fatigue induced by visual display terminals (VDT) work, 25 male college students aged from 20 to 24 years who were not engaged in VDT work were selected to participate in the study. Volunteers were randomly assigned to either the taurine supplementation (n=13) or the placebo supplementation control group (n=12). Before and after 12 days of taurine (3g/day) or placebo supplementation, two identical 2.5-hr VDT work tests were performed while recording the P100, N75 and N145 latencies and P100 amplitude of pattern visual evoked potential (PVEP) and the frequency of critical flicker fusion (CFF). Following 2.5-hr of VDT work, the P100 and N75 latencies of PVEP increased (P<0.01) while the P100 amplitude decreased significantly (P<0.01). The frequency of CFF also reduced significantly (P<0.01). After 12 days of taurine supplementation, the reduction in P100 amplitude after VDT work alleviated significantly (P<0.05). The results suggest that taurine supplementation alleviates visual fatigue induced by VDT work.  相似文献

A series of internal deletions of gene 3, coding for the phage phi 29 DNA terminal protein, have been constructed and characterized. In addition, a substitution mutant in the sequence corresponding to amino acids (aa) 49-51 was obtained. The priming activity of the substitution mutant protein, in the formation of the protein p3-dAMP initiation complex, was drastically reduced suggesting that some of the aa present at position 49-51 are essential for p3 function. Deletions of 8 to 33 aa, from aa residue 48 towards the N terminus of the substitution mutant, further decreased the priming activity of the protein. The activity of deletion mutants lacking 15 or 21 aa from residue 57 towards the C terminus, and also containing a point mutation at position 56, was greatly reduced, and no activity was seen when 24 aa were lacking.  相似文献
