The interactions between seabirds and fisheries pose significant threats for the seabird species such as incidental capture. In contrast, several species of seabirds meet part of their energetic requirements through the use of fisheries discards. Knowledge about the relationship between at-sea distribution of Procellariiformes and fisheries is a key tool in marine ecosystem management. We analysed the spatio-temporal relationship between the areas used by 16 satellite-tracked breeding adults of the Southern Giant Petrel and fisheries distribution and catch at the Patagonian Shelf. We also determined the time spent by adults in different marine jurisdictions. Results indicated a marked spatio-temporal association between birds and fisheries, mainly trawlers. The Southern Giant Petrels concentrated their foraging effort over Argentinean waters. The use of an abundant and predictable food source provided by the fisheries discards may be one of the factors affecting the dynamics of the Southern Giant Petrel populations in Patagonia, Argentina.  相似文献

Southern giant petrels (Macronectes giganteus) are important consumers that range across the oceans throughout the southern hemisphere. In Argentina, previous studies have shown they eat primarily pinnipeds and penguins, which they are assumed to scavenge, although there are occasional anecdotes of them attacking living penguins. Here we describe a predation attempt by a trio of southern giant petrels on a molting adult Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) at the large colony at Punta Tombo, Argentina. We relate giant petrel attendance patterns at the colony to the penguins' phenology, showing how giant petrel numbers rise with the increasing prevalence of vulnerable penguins. We suggest that living penguins—both fledglings and adults—may constitute a more seasonally significant proportion of the giant petrel diet than previously assumed, and their capture may represent a specialized predation technique.  相似文献

Summary Methods of plant regeneration from callus and protoplasts of Helianthus giganteus L. are described. Embryogenic callus was obtained from leaf explants and plants were regenerated from these calli on MS media with different combinations of benzyladenine and naphtaleneacetic acid. Leaf protoplasts isolated from in vitro grown plants formed somatic embryos when cultured in agarose solidified droplets of V-KM medium containing benzyladenine and naphtaleneacetic acid. Embryos developed into plantlets on media with reduced auxin contents. Summary Continuous axillary shoot proliferation and in vitro flowering were achieved using single node explants from a mature (over 70-yr-old) field clump of Dendrocalamus giganteus (giant bamboo). The shoots proliferated in a basal Murashige and Skoog medium with 6 mgl−1 (26.6 μM) N6-benzyladenine (BA) and 2% sucrose. The rate of shoot proliferation gradually increased to over three-fold before in vitro flowering took place. In vitro flowering was not the expression of a species-specific mechanism believed to occur during gregarious flowering, as the mother clump did not flower. The rate of shoot proliferation decreased at flowering, accompanied by reversion of flowering. The development of axillary meristems into vegetative or generative shoots depended on the level of BA. The possible role of BA, changes in the rate of shoot proliferation decreased at flowering, accompanied by reversion of flowering. The development of axillary meristems into vegetative or generative shoots depended on the level of BA. The renal response to infusion of three different saline solutions was studied in chicks of Leach's storm petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa). Each of the solutions (125 mmol·1-1 NaCl at 5.3 ml·h-1, 250 mmol·l-1 NaCl at 2.6 ml·h-1, and 550 mmol·l-1 NaCl at 1.2 ml·h-1) provided the same delivery of Nacl but in different volumes of water. Birds infused with 125 mmol·l-1 NaCl had a glomerular filtration rate of 25.7 ml·h-1, a urine flow rate of 4.4 ml·h-1, and excreted 71% of the infused Na+ load in the urine. With infusion of 250 mmol·l-1 NaCl, the glomerular filtration rate was unchanged (23.3 ml·h-1), but urine flow rate was reduced to 0.93 ml·h-1 and only 35% of the Na+ load was excreted in the urine. Infusion of 550 mmol·l-1 NaCl induced a sharp decrease in glomerular filtration rate (to 3.8 ml·h-1) and urine flow rate (to 0.08 ml·h-1), and only 1.4% of the infused Na+ was excreted in the urine. The contribution of different nephron populations to filtration was assessed by the pattern of staining of glomeruli by alcian blue infused during the last 30 min of the saline infusion. The numbers of stained glomeruli did not differ between birds infused with 125 and 250 mmol·l-1 NaCl (59000 and 55000 glomeruli per kidney, respectively), and the patterns of staining were similar for birds in these two groups. Birds infused with 550 mmol·l-1 NaCl had lighter staining overall and fewer stained glomeruli (37000 per kidney). This absence of staining was predominant in the smaller size classes of glomeruli, suggesting a selective shutdown of smaller (reptilian-type) nephrons during times of osmotic challenge in these birds. A pelagic juvenile (74.0 mm in standard length) of Lepidion inosimae was collected by midwater trawl (0–20 m depth) from the transition waters between the Kuroshio and Oyashio fronts off northeastern Japan. The specimen is characterized by an elongate body, a chin barbel, a minute first ray and non-elongated second ray of first dorsal fin, combination of 55 second dorsal fin rays and 52 anal fin rays, and no ventral luminous organ. This is the first report of early life stages in the genus Lepidion.  相似文献

We studied predation risk in relation to nest location and subcolony size in Southern Rockhopper Penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome) during the chick-rearing period. Striated Caracaras (Phalcoboenus australis), the main predator, preferentially attacked from tussock grasses which are found in the periphery of all subcolonies (peripheral tussocks) and often scattered within them (central tussocks). The greatest numbers of predation and attempted predation events were observed on nests in the periphery of the subcolony next to peripheral tussocks, and on those nests next to central tussocks. Central tussocks offer Striated Caracaras an additional “edge” area from which to prey, much in the same way as do the peripheral tussocks. Predation rate per individual was not correlated with subcolony size possibly due to the presence of central tussocks which, by creating an extra edge area, change the subcolony shape. There is a suggestion (P = 0.06) of increased probability of nest success with subcolony size.  相似文献

Brood protection is a common feature of marine bivalves from higher latitudes. In this study the pallial organs of the Antarctic bivalves, Mysella charcoti (Lamy, 1906) and M. narchii Passos & Domaneschi, 2006 were investigated with respect to anatomical characters related to brooding. Both species are simultaneous hermaphrodites and their eggs contain a large amount of yolk. The number of broods ranges from 16 to 30 in M. narchii and 7–27 in M. charcoti, and ovoviviparity was observed for both. Their ctenidia differ in structure, those of M. charcoti being simpler. In M. narchii there is a large elasticity of the tissue of the marginal food grooves of ctenidia, and cilia are much more abundant on the ctenidial abfrontal surface and on the visceral mass epithelium than in M. charcoti. Anatomical characters of M. charcoti can be considered derived when compared to those of M. narchii. In conclusion, detailed anatomical characters related to brooding may be useful in future systematic studies of Antarctic Bivalvia.  相似文献

The Aspergillus giganteus antifungal protein (AFP), encoded by the afp gene, has been reported to possess in vitro antifungal activity against various economically important fungal pathogens, including the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea. In this study, transgenic rice ( Oryza sativa ) constitutively expressing the afp gene was generated by Agrobacterium -mediated transformation. Two different DNA constructs containing either the afp cDNA sequence from Aspergillus or a chemically synthesized codon-optimized afp gene were introduced into rice plants. In both cases, the DNA region encoding the signal sequence from the tobacco AP24 gene was N-terminally fused to the coding sequence of the mature AFP protein. Transgenic rice plants showed stable integration and inheritance of the transgene. No effect on plant morphology was observed in the afp -expressing rice lines. The inhibitory activity of protein extracts prepared from leaves of afp plants on the in vitro growth of M. grisea indicated that the AFP protein produced by the trangenic rice plants was biologically active. Several of the T(2) homozygous afp lines were challenged with M. grisea in a detached leaf infection assay. Transformants exhibited resistance to rice blast at various levels. Altogether, the results presented here indicate that AFP can be functionally expressed in rice plants for protection against the rice blast fungus M. grisea.  相似文献

Summary The hyphal tip ultrastructure ofAspergillus nidulans andAspergillus giganteus indicates that their apical organization is very similar to that found in other filamentous fungi. Both species have an area immediately behind the hyphal apex free of all large organelles and containing a high concentration of vesicles. InA. giganteus only one size class of vesicle is clearly evident, with a mean diameter of 72 nm. InA. nidulans two size classes of vesicle were found, with mean diameters of 75 nm and 31 nm. A Spitzenkörper is evident inA. nidulans as an area very close to the tip containing only the smaller vesicles. InA. giganteus one or more apparently mature Woronin bodies were found within the first 1 m of some hyphal apices. The possible significance of their presence is discussed.  相似文献

Trichodesmium is a filamentous, colonial nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria, ubiquitous in tropical and subtropical regions of the world's oceans. Trichodesmium fixes atmospheric nitrogen and can comprise a significant fraction of total primary production in oceanic surface waters. Therefore, the consumption and fate of Trichodesmium has important consequences for understanding carbon and nitrogen cycling in the open ocean. The pelagic harpacticoid copepod Macrosetella gracilis uses Trichodesmium not only as a physical substrate for juvenile development, but also as a food source. Several different types of pelagic copepods (including several species of calanoids, harpacticoids and a poecilostomatoid species) were tested for ingestion of Trichodesmium by labelling the cyanobacteria with 14C. Only the pelagic harpacticoids ingested Trichodesmium. Here we report the first grazing rates based on 14C-uptake measurements for Macrosetella gracilis (0.173 µg C copepod–1 h–1), and the first quantitative measurements of both Miracia efferata (0.402 µg C copepod–1 h–1) and Oculosetella gracilis (0.126 µg C copepod–1 h–1) ingesting this cyanobacteria. Ingestion rates of M. gracilis and M. efferata on the two different species of Trichodesmium, T. thiebautii and T. erythraeum, as well as the two different colonial morphologies of T. thiebautii, spherical-shaped (puffs) and fusiform (tufts), were also compared. Both Miracia and Macrosetella had higher ingestion rates on the puff colonies than the tuft colonies of T. thiebautii.. Both also had higher ingestion rates of T. erythraeum than T. thiebautii. Trichodesmium thiebautii contains a previously reported neurotoxin which may be an important factor in determining trophodynamic interactions. Our results suggest that pelagic harpacticoid copepods can be quantitatively important in determining the fate of Trichodesmium carbon and nitrogen.  相似文献

Summary The threat caused by intracellular pathogens increases as conventional drag treatments are less and less effective against a wide range of microorganisms. Understanding the molecular mechanisms used by intracellular pathogens to avoid killing and degradation in their host cells is likely to point at new ways to threat infectious diseases. We discuss some of the strategies used by various microorganisms to avoid killing and degradation in phagolysosomes. Interestingly, it appears that microbes have a lot to teach us about the cell biology and molecular mechanisms of organelle sorting in macrophages.  相似文献

New observations on leaves of herbaceous lycopsid specimens previously attributed to Drepanophycus schopfii Mildenhall from Marie Byrd Land, West Antarctica, indicate that they belong to Haskinsia colophylla Grierson et Banks. Biomass changes across an annual cycle were followed at two sampling sites in the floodplain marsh of the Lower Paraná River: close to the river-shore and 800 m inside the floodplain marsh, both dominated by Scirpus californicus and Cyperus giganteus. Tidal influence determines a daily exchange of water between the river and the floodplain marsh.Estimated net primary production was higher in the river (2820 against 1770 g m–2). Contents of nitrogen and phosphorus in plant tissue decreased from the river to the floodplain (0.62 to 0.45% N and 0.18 to 0.14% P). In spite of the important water exchange between the river and the floodplain, a decrease in nitrate, oxygen and suspended matter, and an increase in soluble reactive phosphorus in the water were observed from the river towards the floodplain marsh.A primary production gradient exists from the river to the inner floodplain marsh, where production is nitrogen-limited, sustained mainly on nutrients supplied by the river. Floodplain marshes are nitrate sinks, probably through denitrification losses and macrophyte uptake.  相似文献

Pseudomonas sp. 14-3 is an Antarctic bacterium that shows high stress resistance in association with high polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production. In this paper genes involved in PHB biosynthesis (phaRBAC) were found within a genomic island named pha-GI. Numerous mobile elements or proteins associated with them, such as an integrase, insertion sequences, a bacterial group II intron, a complete Type I protein secretion system and IncP plasmid-related proteins were detected among the 28 ORFs identified in this large genetic element (32.3kb). The G+C distribution was not homogeneous, likely reflecting a mosaic structure that contains regions from diverse origins. pha-GI has strong similarities with genomic islands found in diverse Proteobacteria, including Burkholderiales species and Azotobacter vinelandii. The G+C content, phylogeny inference and codon usage analysis showed that the phaBAC cluster itself has a complex mosaic structure and indicated that the phaB and phaC genes were acquired by horizontal transfer, probably derived from Burkholderiales. These results describe for the first time a pha cluster located within a genomic island, and suggest that horizontal transfer of pha genes is a mechanism of adaptability to stress conditions such as those found in the extreme Antarctic environment.  相似文献

Synopsis Predation on eggs of the angelfish, Centropyge ferrugatus, was observed in the coral reefs of Sesoko Island, Okinawa, Japan. This angelfish released pelagic eggs in pairs at sunset after slow ascents. Of 99 matings of this angelfish, an omnivorous damselfish Amblyglyphidodon curacao approached in 25, and fed on the released eggs in eight cases. The spawning angelfish never attacked the egg-predators. Pairs of this angelfish avoided the egg-predators by delaying mating for several minutes during courtships, and by frequent changes of spawning sites. Of the 25 matings targeted by the egg-predators, the angelfish successfully avoided predation in 17 cases. Eight matings were failures mainly due to lack of any attempt to elude the predator, suggesting that the delayed matings on multiple spawning sites are effective anti-egg predator behaviors.  相似文献

The goal of the present study was to establish the condition to obtain preparative amounts of the recombinant cytotoxin α-sarcin to be used for immunoconjugate production. α-Sarcin cDNA was isolated fromAspergillus giganteus strain MDH 18894 and its expression inEscherichia coli was attempted by the use of both two-cistron and fusion protein-expression systems. Whereas the former resulted in low intracellular expression level of recombinant α-sarcin (r-Sar), the latter allowed high-level expression of the fusion protein in the culture supernant. A variant form of α-sarcin with an additional threonine residue in position 1 (Thr-Sar) was obtained by proteolytic processing of the fusion protein with a final yield after purification of 40 mg/L of culture. Both recombinant proteins r-Sar and Thr-Sar were identical to native a-sarcin with respect to the biochemical properties and to the in vitro biological activity.  相似文献

Summary Photosynthesis and respiration of crustose lichens in their natural situation were measured by means of a Walz porometer with a modified cuvette and a plexiglass ring. Habitat influence and the specific performance of three maritime Antarctic species were demonstrated by diurnal courses of microclimate and CO2 exchange during rainy days. In further field experiments the photosynthetic response to soaking with water was tested. Haematomma erythromma is rain-exposed at its natural habitat on coastal rocks but tends to dry out quickly. The photosynthetic efficiency of the chlorophyll of this photophilous species was high. Lecidea sciatrapha appears to be chionophilous and had a low light compensation point of its net photosynthesis. The photosynthetic rates per surface area of these two species were low compared with those of Caloplaca sublobulata. According to its habitat selection C. sublobulata is typified as an ombrophobous lichen. This characterization was confirmed experimentally by our gas exchange measurements.  相似文献
