The catch of seven species of fish at the Tjeukemeer fishery between 1964 and 1969 is given. This period includes an important change in the fishing method. The catches are dominated by three species, the pike-perch, bream and the eel. The yield of the pike-perch is large and probably a reflection of the high production of the lake. The seasonal pattern of the catches is discussed with particular reference to fishing mortality. A general decline in the yield of bream is noted. However the yield of eels has been consistently high throughout the period. These data provide a valuable insight into the composition of the fish community within the lake.  相似文献

A new method of determining fish numbers in a large river, which involved electrofishing from boats downstream to an AC electrical barrier, produced capture efficiencies for different species ranging from 28 to 82% when successive pairs of catches were combined. Estimates of population density, biomass and production for the 18 species in a 2.538 ha segment of the Pilica River, Poland revealed a decline in total numbers of the fish in species diversity between 1963 and 1980. This is attributed to increased fishing pressure, and to a loss in habitat diversity following the loss of many water mills and associated dams. The total production estimate of 0.85 g m−2 year−1 is low compared with the few published estimates for other large rivers. Roach, dace, chub, gudgeon and bream were the most numerous fish and they constituted 75% of the total population estimate, and 68% of the standing crop and annual production.  相似文献

Relative abundance and within-lake distributions of three fishes, northern redbelly dace (Phoxinus eos), finescale dace (Phoxinus neogaeus), and central mudminnow (Umbra limi), were examined using minnow traps in Tuesday Lake, a small bog lake in the Upper Peninsula, Michigan. For these species, catches in minnow traps placed at the perimeter of the lake were 21 to 52 times higher than catches in midlake traps. Variance: mean ratios of perimeter trap catches indicated that both dace species were highly aggregated while the distribution of mudminnows was less aggregated or random. Over an 11 day period during which all fish caught were removed from the lake, catch per unit effort (CPUE) of both dace species declined in response to fish removal. In contrast, CPUE for mudminnows was low initially, increased to an asymptote and then declined only in the last 5 days of the fish removal. The patterns of CPUE for mudminnows indicated that mudminnow trapability and/or activity was reduced in the presence of high densities of dace. The low abundance of dace in traps with many mudminnows suggested mudminnows avoided traps already containing dace. Throughout the removal period, CPUE provided an accurate index of dace abundance, whereas this was true for mudmnnows only after dace populations had been reduced drastically. Therefore, in any use of minnow traps to estimate populations, both spatial distributions and relative species abundance of small fishes must be taken into account.  相似文献

The European Standard EN 14757 recommends gillnet mesh sizes that range from 5 to 55mm (knot-to-knot) for the standard monitoring of fish assemblages and suggests adding gillnets with larger mesh sizes if necessary. Our research showed that the recommended range of mesh sizes did not provide a representative picture of fish sizes for larger species that commonly occur in continental Europe. We developed a novel, large mesh gillnet which consists of mesh sizes 70, 90, 110 and 135mm (knot to knot, 10m panels) and assessed its added value for monitoring purposes. From selectivity curves obtained by sampling with single mesh size gillnets (11 mesh sizes 6 – 55mm) and large mesh gillnets, we identified the threshold length of bream (Abramis brama) above which this widespread large species was underestimated by European standard gillnet catches. We tested the European Standard gillnet by comparing its size composition with that obtained during concurrent pelagic trawling and purse seining in a cyprinid-dominated reservoir and found that the European Standard underestimated fish larger than 292mm by 26 times. The inclusion of large mesh gillnets in the sampling design removed this underestimation. We analysed the length-age relationship of bream in the Římov Reservoir, and concluded that catches of bream larger than 292mm and older than five years were seriously underrepresented in European Standard gillnet catches. The Římov Reservoir is a typical cyprinid-dominated water body where the biomass of bream > 292mm formed 70% of the pelagic trawl and purse seine catch. The species-specific relationships between the large mesh gillnet catch and European Standard catch suggested that the presence of carp (Cyprinus carpio), European catfish (Silurus glanis), tench (Tinca tinca) or bream warrants the use of both gillnet types. We suggest extending the gillnet series in the European Standard to avoid misinterpretation of fish community biomass estimates.  相似文献

  1. The littoral zone of lakes is used as spawning, shelter, or feeding habitat for many fish species and hence is of key importance for overall lake functioning. Despite this, hardly any studies exist examining the long-term dynamics and response of the littoral fish community, composed mostly of juvenile fish, to environmental change. Here, we study the response of total catch per unit effort (CPUE) and individual species CPUE of such a community to 17 years of oligotrophication and examine whether the species responses can be characterised as synchronous or asynchronous.
  2. We analyse a data set of beach seine catches carried out during morning and twilight, late spring and late summer at three sites in large and deep Lake Constance from 1997 to 2014. Generalised additive mixed models were used to explore changes in CPUE of the overall community and of the most frequently occurring species, and Kendall's W test was applied to examine whether the dynamics of fish species were synchronous or asynchronous.
  3. Species-specific and total CPUE strongly differed between morning and twilight and between spring and summer indicating an important role of behavioural and life cycle adaptations of species for CPUE. In addition, also the CPUE of some species seeking shelter behind larger stones was lower at sites without these.
  4. Total CPUE did not decline suggesting the overall abundance of littoral fish was resilient to declining nutrients. In contrast, fish community composition changed strongly during the study period due to increases in some species (dace, loach, perch) and decreases in others (bream, burbot, chub, ruffe), indicating response diversity of fish to oligotrophication. The type of community dynamics was scale-dependent, whereby significantly synchronous dynamics according to Kendall's W were observed when taking seasonal variability into account. In contrast, significantly asynchronous species dynamics were observed when only the low-frequency variability of species dynamics was considered separately for spring and summer time series.
  5. Resilience of littoral fish total CPUE to oligotrophication might have important consequences for ecosystem dynamics and ecosystem services beyond the littoral zone. As small fish often impose strong predation pressure on zooplankton, their resilience might sustain a high top-down control on zooplankton resulting in a further reduction of zooplankton biomass. This could contribute to delayed food web responses and reduced growth of fish with oligotrophication.

The diets of the fish community of Trucka Brook, a small stream located in the central Adirondack Mountains in northern New York, were examined in relation to the bottom fauna and invertebrate drift. Measures of overlap were calculated between the diets of each fish species examined, brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), blacknose dace (Rhinichthys atratulus), creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus) and pearl dace (Semotilus margarita). Overlap was also examined between the fish diets and bottom and drift samples. Blacknose dace, pearl dace and brook trout had the most similar diets which were closely associated with the benthos. Creek chub had the most distinctive diets which did not compare well with any other fish species during either diurnal or nocturnal periods. The mayfly nymph Litobranchia recurvata was the most abundant bottom invertebrate and was the major prey of benthic feeding fishes. The invertebrate drift did not compare favorably with any of the fishes' diets because of the predominance of large cased limnephilid larvae (primarily Psychoglypha sp.) which were not readily consumed by fish.  相似文献

1. To examine the strength and role of indirect effects through trophic cascades by omnivorous fish on algal biomass in streams, we introduced one of four fish species (ayu Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis, pike gudgeon Pseudogobio esocinus esocinus, Japanese dace Tribolodon hakonensis and pale chub Zacco platypus) in experimental pools. We also investigated the indirect effects of gudgeon, dace and chub on the growth of ayu. 2. We chose the four fish species across a continuum of omnivory. Ayu fed mainly on benthic algae, and gudgeon predominantly on invertebrates. Dace and chub fed on both algae and invertebrates, but dace preyed on invertebrates more than chub. 3. The presence of gudgeon, dace and chub reduced the number of algal-feeding invertebrates and increased the algal biomass through trophic cascades. Consequently, ayu growth rate over the experimental period in pools with one of the three fish species was 25.9-44.1 times greater than the growth rate in pools with only ayu. 4. The positive indirect effect on ayu growth was large for gudgeon and dace and small for chub, whereas the addition of ayu reduced ayu growth considerably due to intraspecific competition. 5. The relative intensity of indirect effects on ayu growth through trophic cascades was predictable from the food overlap between ayu and the other fishes. However, the similar strength of indirect effects by gudgeon and dace that fed differently on algae and invertebrates suggests that feeding behaviour, prey preference and trait-mediated indirect interactions were also important in the prediction.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The River Eden (Kent, England) holds a mixed coarse fish population in which minnows ( Phoxinus phoxinus ), gudgeon ( Gobio gobio ), chub ( Leuciscus cephalus ) and dace ( Leuciscus leuciscus ) are numerically predominant. Chub and dace provide the major interest to anglers and their growth and production were studied. Observed growth rates of both species were marginally below recorded averages from other British habitats. Back-calculations showed that year-class strength and relative growth rates varied between years. Instantaneous mortality rate Z was 0.147 for chub aged 1–10, 0.438 for chub aged 10 and over, and 0.172 for dace. Exclusive of the 0-group, fish numbers, biomass (wet wt) and production were found to be 0.1305 m-2, 19.12 gm-2 and 5.38 gm-2 year-1, respectively, for chub and 0.0968 m-2, 4.33 gm-2 and 1.69 gm-2 year-1 for dace. Smoothing of data produced theoretical production figures of 6.69 gm-2 year-1 for chub and 1.15 gm-2 year-1 for dace.  相似文献

This study compares the effectiveness and representativeness of electrofishing, snorkelling, seining, baited lift netting, multi‐mesh gillnetting, baited fish traps, fyke netting, angling and longline fishing, considering three typical lentic flood‐plain habitats at different times of day. Electrofishing was by far the most effective method yielding highest species richness, species trait representation and catch per unit of effort (CPUE), followed by seining. For single species like dace Leuciscus leuciscus, European ruffe Gymnocephalus cernua, common bream Abramis brama and silver bream Blicca bjoerkna, seining was more effective than electrofishing. With both methods, some species were more consistently caught during night, dusk or dawn than during daylight. All other methods tested cannot be generally recommended for fish community assessments in shallow backwaters due to their low representativeness of species inventory and generally low CPUE. Based on these results, electrofishing of 30 m transect replicates at different times of day for monitoring the fish community in shallow backwaters, can be recommended, enabling the maximum possible comparability to adjacent river habitats. Seining should be considered as an alternative if accessibility of habitats is restricted or electrofishing is prohibited. The 25 species detected in the backwaters also suggest that these habitats contribute a large proportion of fish diversity and should be included in standard assessments of river ecological status.  相似文献

The Kafue Floodplain fishery produces an annual fish yield of about 5000 tonnes. The 1971 closure of the Kafue Gorge Dam downstream from the floodplain modified flooding patterns. Pre-impoundment studies predicted this modification would increase fish stocks. Experimental gillnets set in 1975 and 1976 caught 18 species on a regular basis, nine of which were abundant enough for comparison with catches in similar gillnet samples taken prior to completion of the Kafue Gorge Dam. Of these nine species, experimental gillnet catches of three predator species were smaller in 1975–76 than in 1969–70. Catches of only one species increased significantly. Whether this change is due to the modified flooding pattern is unclear; unusually dry flood conditions in 1973 and increased fishing effort may have contributed.  相似文献

The spawning periodicity of eight fish species was investigated in three English lowland rivers over a 6 year period from patterns in 0+ year fish standard length ( L S) distributions. A single cohort of 0+ year dace Leuciscus leuciscus , roach Rutilus rutilus and perch Perca fluviatilis was observed each year, suggesting that these species spawned only once annually. By contrast, populations of chub Leuciscus cephalus , bleak Alburnus alburnus , bream Abramis brama , gudgeon Gobio gobio and minnow Phoxinus phoxinus were inferred to spawn on more than one occasion each year. Annual and intercatchment variations occurred in the L S distribution patterns of some of the fish species. In chub, for example, although a minimum of two 0+ year cohorts occurred in all years in the River Trent, 'multiple' spawning (either at the individual or population level) was most apparent in 1999, 2003 and 2004. By contrast, 'multiple' spawning events were not evident in all years in the Warwickshire Avon and Yorkshire Ouse, with recruitment presumably based upon a single spawning event in some years. There is effectively a trade-off between early spawning (extended growing season), and the possibility that environmental conditions will impact upon recruitment success, and the potential for reduced overwinter survival of smaller individuals with lower lipid resources from later spawning events. Notwithstanding, fishes as small as 15 mm L S survived the winter in some years, suggesting that progeny from later spawning events may make important contributions to fish recruitment success.  相似文献

The large‐scale spatial distribution of fish was investigated within a morphometrically simple canyon‐shaped reservoir with a single major tributary and a longitudinal trophic gradient (Římov Reservoir, Czech Republic). Samples of fish were taken by Nordic survey gill nets (several mesh sizes from 8 to 70 mm knot to knot) installed as surface nets at several offshore areas located along the longitudinal axis of the reservoir. Surveys were carried out in late summer during 1999–2003. An obvious distribution gradient of fish was revealed along the longitudinal axis of the Římov Reservoir. The total relative fish abundance and biomass (catch per unit effort) decreased considerably from the upstream end of the reservoir toward the dam. Roach (Rutilus rutilus), bleak (Alburnus alburnus) and bream (Abramis brama) comprised the bulk of catches at all areas. Enhanced dominance of bream was observed in the fish assemblage at the uppermost, more eutrophic area of the reservoir. The highest number of fish species and the highest abundance of young‐of‐the‐year fish were also observed in the tributary area. In the downstream part of the reservoir, gill net surveys along the vertical depth profiles indicated that offshore fish occupied mostly the epilimnion. Extreme flood events affected the Římov Reservoir, however, it seemed they had no significant impact on the gradients described. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

In fish of the family Cyprinidae extensive polymorphism and heterogeneity of serum transferrins were found. Ten variants of transferrins were detected in barbel, 9 in dace and bleak, 7 in chub and bream, 6 in rudd, 5 in roach, white bream, silver carp, big head and crucian carp, 3 in tench, and 2 variants in nase, ide and goldfish. All the variants observed bound radioactive iron. The phenotype patterns indicated a simple genetic determination, by a set of codominant alleles at one locus, and this even in tetraploid species. Transferrins of some species were partly isolated. The transferrins of all 22 species analysed were heterogeneous and homozygous pheno-types had 1 to 6 zones of various intensities, binding 59Fe. In barbel both single-zone and two-zone variants were present and transferrins of roach had variable heterogeneity. Sialic acid was found only in transferrins of silver carp, big head and in the two-zone variants of barbel. The occurrence of phenotypes with single and double zones of transferrins in barbel indicates the possibility of genetic determination of the inability of single-zone variants to bind sialic acid.  相似文献

From July 1995 to January 1996, we examined the seasonal variations of the diel dynamics of habitat use by young-of-the-year cyprinid fishes (chub Leuciscus cephalus and dace L. leuciscus) in a lotic stream (River Ourthe, Southern Belgium). Inshore bays and neighbouring habitats (riparian shelters, entrance of the bay and shallow riffles) were sampled every three hours from 6:00 to 22:00 h, using DC electrofishing with prepositioned frames. In early summer, chub larvae moved exclusively in between the middle of the bay and riparian shelters inside the bay. Juvenile dace and, later in the season, juvenile chub showed diel dynamics of which the amplitude was dependent on temperature and illumination: they moved into the bay in the morning, gathered in greater numbers at mid-day (up to 586 chub and 387 dace m-2), then progressively left the bay and entered neighbouring riffles in the late afternoon or evening. Small fish immigrated earlier into the bay and emigrated later than fish of larger size. By late September, most dace had left the bays, but returned there when water temperatures were <7°C. During autumn and winter, juvenile dace and chub of all sizes occupied exclusively inshore shelters with submerged riparian macrophytes or fallen tree leaves (corresponding densities of 0.7, 9.5 and 15.8 dace m-2, and of 6.8, 20.2 and 94.2 chub m-2). These results support the idea that young-of-the-year dace and chub shift from a restricted use of inshore shallow bays to a diel dynamics with alternate inshore-offshore movements at the time when they become juveniles, although the precise timings of these movements are still influenced by fish size and water temperature afterwards. The significance of these dynamics is discussed within a context of trade-off between the use of food resources and avoidance of predators.  相似文献

The fish population of the lower reaches of the Sanyati River was studied using multifilament gillnets and monthly sampling was conducted over 13 consecutive months. A total of 15 fish species belonging to seven families were collected and variations in monthly catches and catch per unit effort and condition were observed. The five most common species exhibited a seasonal breeding pattern, with most breeding occurring in the rainy season. The exotic Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus was found to have established itself in the Sanyati River. The results of this study were compared with those of previous workers on Lake Kariba.  相似文献

Angling competition catch data were gathered by postal questionnaire during 1975–1986 for three sections of the R. Severn. Angling success and species composition were analysed relative to both water temperature and year. The importance of barbel increased rapidly from 5° C to 15° C then levelled. Roach, chub and gudgeon showed peaks in the ranges 7–12, 10–15 and 9–16° C, respectively. Dace, bleak, eel and bream displayed consistent increases in contribution to catch with rising temperature. Year-to-year variations in angling success differed according to river section and for the most part could be explained by changes in the importance of species. The percentage of anglers with catch during the period June-November ranged from 50 to 91% and catch rates from 66 to 121 g man 1 h 1.  相似文献

Response to predators may not be identical between different prey species with different life histories and body sizes, particularly when the threat of predation is not great. To clarify this hypothesis, we introduced two prey species (10 Japanese dace, Tribolodon hakonensis, and 10 pale chub, Zacco platypus) into each experimental pond (in total, 8 ponds×4 trials) in which benthic algae had been allowed to grow. The presence or absence of Far Eastern catfish, Silurus asotus, and a refuge for prey fish was used to produce four treatments. The presence of catfish and/or a refuge did not affect either the feeding behavior or growth rate of Japanese dace. In contrast, when catfish were present and no refuge was available, the incidence of bottom feeding for pale chub greatly decreased. Pale chub growth rate was low when catfish were present and a refuge was available, indicating that pale chub spent more of their time in the refuge and lost opportunities of acquiring food. Japanese dace can reach a threshold size at which the prey are safe from predation, but pale chub cannot, and this may explain the differences in response to predators of the two species.  相似文献

Human activities reduce biodiversity but may also drive diversification by modifying selection. Urbanization alters stream hydrology by increasing peak water velocities, which should in turn alter selection on the body morphology of aquatic species. Here, we show how urbanization can generate evolutionary divergence in the body morphology of two species of stream fish, western blacknose dace (Rhinichthys obtusus) and creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus). We predicted that fish should evolve more streamlined body shapes within urbanized streams. We found that in urban streams, dace consistently exhibited more streamlined bodies while chub consistently showed deeper bodies. Comparing modern creek chub populations with historical museum collections spanning 50 years, we found that creek chub (1) rapidly became deeper bodied in streams that experienced increasing urbanization over time, (2) had already achieved deepened bodies 50 years ago in streams that were then already urban (and showed no additional deepening over time), and (3) remained relatively shallow bodied in streams that stayed rural over time. By raising creek chub from five populations under common conditions in the laboratory, we found that morphological differences largely reflected genetically based differences, not velocity–induced phenotypic plasticity. We suggest that urbanization can drive rapid, adaptive evolutionary responses to disturbance, and that these responses may vary unpredictably in different species.  相似文献

Lake Sainte-Croix is a hydro-electric reservoir on the river Verdon that came into operation about 16 years ago. The area of the lake is about 22 km2 and the volume about 767 Mm3. The water level drops by as much as 16 m in winter. Sainte-Croix is a warm monomictic oligotrophic lake. The indigenous fish fauna of the Verdon originally included 8 species. Successive stocking has raised this number to 17. In catches made in 1976–1977 with 27 mm mesh nets, 80 to 90% of the fish with a body size of between 15 and 25 cm were of the four main species indigenous to the river before the dam was built: Leuciscus cephalus, Barbus fluviatilis, Chondrostoma toxostoma, Salmo trutta. Catches made at same period with 14 mm mesh nets gave only Chondrostoma toxostoma and Leuciscus cephalus.Changes in the fish fauna were apparent from catches made in 1984 and 1987 with nets of the same mesh size. There was a marked demographic increase of roach, and more recently of bleak and gudgeon, all three species introduced after the construction of the dam. At the same time, there was a decrease in catch frequency of Ch. toxostoma, L. cephalus and B. fluviatilis in the downstream area of the lake. Stomach content analysis carried out in different seasons on the six most abundant species of the lake (roach, toxostome, chub, bleak, perch and gudgeon) provided evidence on the trophic organisation of the fish fauna. We have measured niche breadth for each species by the Simpson diversity index and niche overlap by the Pianka index. Bleak is the only species to feed on zooplankton in open water. Roach is a particularly opportunistic feeder, sometimes taking plankton, but at Sainte-Croix it is exclusively herbivorous and benthophagous. Niche overlap between these two species is slight or null, depending on the season. On the other hand, there is a high degree of overlap between roach and chub and between roach and toxostome. The decrease in toxostome and chub frequency in the downstream area of the lake, where roach is most abundant, would appear to be a competitive exclusion phenomenon. There is high niche overlap between bleak and young perch, which partly explains the low abundance of the latter species; other contributory factors are the scarcity of zooplankton inshore, and the scarcity of zoobenthos resulting from the drop in the water level in winter.  相似文献

From the years 1997 to 2000, fish assemblages from 15 groyne fields and training walls (a current guiding dyke, protecting the groyne field) of the Middle Elbe River (Germany) were examined by electrofishing. The aim of the study was to detect abiotic environmental key variables which determine preadult and adult fish assemblage in typical riverbank structures using multivariate ordination techniques (canonical correspondence analysis) and univariate methods (logistic regression analysis). Habitat preferences of preadult and adult stages of selected fish species were also estimated. Fish sampling was carried out at 190 river stretches; a further 1615 samples were taken by the point‐abundance sampling method. In total, 21 732 preadult and adult individuals belonging to 30 fish species were caught; perch, eel, ide, roach, chub, gudgeon, bleak and white bream were the most frequent. Eurytopic species clearly dominated the fish assemblage with 72% total abundance, followed by rheophilic species (26%). Limnophilic fish species (rudd, crucian carp, stickleback and tench) were relatively rare (2% of total abundance), with frequencies of occurrence between 1 and 10%. The highest species diversities were estimated in structurally diverse training walls and groyne fields with defective groynes, whereas low species diversity was found to occur in poorly structured, strongly silted groyne fields with intact groynes. Additionally, typical seasonal and annual changes of the fish assemblage were observed. From the mesoscalic point of view, the structure of the preadult and adult fish assemblage was affected by both spatial (type of groyne field, river stretch) and temporal factors (year, season). Regarding the microhabitat, hydromorphological parameters (slope, current velocity, water level, predominant and secondary substrate) followed by physicochemical water values [dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature and pH‐value] are of significance for the structure of the fish community. Furthermore, hiding places (shelter) are of subordinate but significant importance for the fish assemblage in the poorly structured main channel of the Elbe River. Importance of hydromorphological factors on the microhabitat scale was confirmed by multiple logistic regression in 12 of 14 preference models, conducted for different ontogenetic stages of roach, bream, white bream, bleak, ide, chub, gudgeon, asp, perch and eel. Habitat preferences of adult bleak and preadult roach were first determined by physicochemical water values and seasonal influences. Univariate models were generated to describe specific habitat preferences of different species and age‐stages regarding the most important environmental variables (depth, velocity, predominant substrate, slope and shelter). Intraspecific differences were noticed between preadult and adult chub regarding preferences for water velocity, or between preadult and adult perch concerning slope of shore. Interspecific differences were observed, e.g. between adult roach and white bream, with regard to the use of shelters.  相似文献
