Elevated concentrations of Al have been observed in acidic surface waters. An assessment of the chemistry of aqueous Al is of interest because of its role as a toxicant to aquatic organisms, a pH buffer, and an adsorbent of orthophosphate and organic carbon. In this investigation we evaluated the spatial and temporal fluctuations of Al forms in an acidic drainage lake.High concentrations of NO 3 (51.0 ± 11 mol l–1), H+ (14.9 ± 3.5 mol l–1), and Al (19.6 ± 3.5 mol l–1) were introduced to Dart's Lake through drainage water during the snowmelt period. During low flow periods microbially mediated depletions of nitrate served to neutralize H+ and aluminum base neutralizing capacity. Thus in Dart's Lake, NO 3 transformations were extremely important in regulating short-term changes in pH and subsequent changes in the inorganic forms of Al. During stratification periods Al appeared to be non-conservative within the lake system. Although we know very little about the character and transformations of alumino-organic solutes, these substances were correlated with dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations. Alumino-organic substances appear to be introduced to the lake from both drainage water and sediments.  相似文献

Porewater acid/base chemistry in near-shore regions of an acidic lake   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sediment porewaters in the near-shore region (within 1 m of the shoreline) of an acidic lake (Dart's Lake) were monitored during the summer of 1983 to investigate whether spatial variations in porewater acid/base chemistry were significant in this region of the lake. Previous investigations of Dart's Lake porewaters have indicated that within deeper waters (>2m depth), sediment porewaters are elevated in alkalinity relative to overlying lake water. Within the near-shore region, porewaters both considerably more and less acidic than the lake water were observed. Both reduction of strong acid anions (SO4 2–, NO3 ) and the mobilization of base cations were significant mechanisms of alkalinity production in porewaters exhibiting reducing conditions. In sediments reflecting oxic conditions, porewaters were generally more acidic than the lakewater. Measurement of groundwater seepage into the lake at the near-shore sites indicated that oxic sites exhibited elevated inputs of groundwater when compared to sites where reducing conditions existed. The acidic porewaters associated with high groundwater flows suggests that groundwater inputs to the lake may be a source of acidity (not alkalinity) on a whole-lake basis.  相似文献

The acidic caldera lake Caviahue (Patagonia, Argentina) and its main tributaries were studied on two dates during September 1998. The main results are: The acidity of the Lake Caviahue (pH: 2.56, acidity: >5 mmol H+ l–1) is controlled by the extremely acidic Upper Rio Agrio (pH: 1.78, acidity: >20 mmol H+ l–1). The high sulphate contents of both the river and the lake can be attributed to sulphuric acid generated by the uptake of sulphurous gases in the crater lake of Copahue Volcano at approximately 2800 m a.s.l. The high concentrations of both Fe and trace metals (e.g. Cr, Ni, Zn) in Lake Caviahue originate from sulphur–acid interactions with the predominantly volcanic geology of the catchment area. The P-rich andesitic geology influences both the Upper and Lower Rio Agrio and Lake Caviahue. Both were found to have high phosphorus concentrations (300–500 g P l–1) indicative of a high potential for eutrophication. The plankton community consisted of bacterioplankton, phytoplankton and rotifers. The phytoplankton was dominated by one green alga, Keratococcus raphidioides (>90% of total abundance) followed by a green sphaerical and Chlamydomonas sp. The total phytoplankton density was about 15000 cells ml–1 in the upper 10 m of the water column. Rotifers were represented by one bdelloid species and their abundance was highly variable (360–4040 ind l–1) in the water columm. In the Upper and Lower Rio Agrio, the epilithic community was dominated by one chloroccocal species and two species of Ulothricales. According to trophic categories based on phytoplankton density and TP concentration, Lake Caviahue can be classified as mesotrophic/eutrophic. However, chlorophyll a concentrations observed were not in agreement with this state.  相似文献

We studied the effect of a calcite (CaCO3) treatment on peat and pore water chemistry in poor fen and conifer swamp wetlands next to Woods Lake and its tributaries to evaluate the role of wetlands in an Experimental Watershed Liming Study (EWLS). Peat was characteristically organic rich and nutrient poor, with exchangeable Ca concentrations of < 13 cmolckg–1. We estimated that between 0.4 to 4 Mg (CaCO3) ha–1 fell directly on three study sites; however, one year after the treatment the increase in Ca concentration (0–8 cm depth) was equivalent to a (CaCO3) dosage of 3 Mg ha–1 with an additional 2–4 Mg ha–1 of undissolved (CaCO3) still present, suggesting the peat retained Ca supplied from uplands. Most aspects of peat chemistry including microbial respiration and SO4 reduction did not respond to the treatment.Peat pore water (5 and 20 cm depths) had a mean pH of 4.82 before treatment with high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC mean of 790 mol C/l) and low Ca2+ concentration (mean of 32 mol/l). The (CaCO3) treatment increased concentrations of Ca2+ to a mean of 87 mol/l and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from 205 to a mean of 411 mol/l, whereas it decreased monomeric Al concentration from 19 to 10 mol/l. Otherwise, pore water chemistry showed little response to the treatment, at least within natural spatial and temporal variation of solute concentrations. The results suggest that liming watersheds with the relatively low (CaCO3) dosage applied in this study can benefit acidic waters downstream by exporting more Ca and DIC and less monomeric Al, with otherwise little effect on the peat itself.  相似文献

Field research was conducted on four Atlantic Coastal Plain soils in the United States to evaluate response of corn (Zea mays L.) plants to Mn application. The soils under study were classified as either Aeric or Typic Ochraquults. Manganese application increased corn grain yields by an average of 1195 kg ha–1 on the four soils. The average grain yields on the soils were 7955 kg ha–1 for the control and 9150 kg ha–1 for the +Mn treatment. A Mitscherlich plant growth model was used to establish relationships between percent maximum grain yield and Mn concentration in the ear leaf at early silk (r=0.87, =0.01) and in the mature grain (r=0.58, =0.01). Based on 90% of maximum yield as the definition of the critical deficiency level, the critical Mn deficiency levels calculated with parameters from the Mitscherlich model were 10.6 mg kg–1 in the ear leaf and 4.9 mg kg–1 in the grain.  相似文献

Deep Lake, a hypersaline lake of about ten times seawater concentration, rarely freezes and is characterized by a monomictic thermal cycle, Winter circulation, at c. –17 °C, lasts for two to three months. In summer, epilimnetic temperatures from 7–11 °C result in large vertical thermal gradients (21–26 °C) which combine with the enhanced rate of density change per degree Celsius, accompanying such high salt concentration, to produce a particularly stable density configuration in Deep Lake (Schmidt stability c. 8000 g-cm cm–2; 0.785 J cm–2). The Birgean annual heat budget (c. 24500 cal cm–2; 102.7 103 J cm–2) is comparable to that of a temperate lake with a similar mean depth, despite the comparatively high ratio of Birgean wind work to annual heat budget (0.37 g-cm cal–1). Deep lake retains c. 50% of the incident solar radiation during the short summer heating period; within the range estimated for first class lakes in North America. Extended daylight hours certainly contribute to the high maximum rate of heating in the lake (444 cal cm–2 day–1; 1.86 103 J cm–2 day–1). Deep Lake cools at a rate less than half its average heating rate. Partitioning the total stability into thermal and saline components shows that salinity can contribute up to c. 20% of the maximum summer Schmidt stability. In early summer, the effect of small melt-streams is to increase stability by diluting the epilimnion. In autumn, evaporative water loss can overtake this effect, creating small de-stabilizing salinity gradients. The usually short-term stabilizing influence of snowfall and drift is less predictable, but is probably more common in winter when strong winds are most frequent.Hypersalinity has a profound effect on the physical cycle of Deep Lake, through freezing point depression and the increased rate of density change with temperature. These changes affect the lake's biota, both in relation to osmotic stress, and by effectively exposing them to a more thermally extreme environment. A comparison between Deep Lake and a smaller lake of similar salinity (Lake Hunazoko, Skarvs Nes), demonstrates that it is inappropriate to consider the biological effects of salinity in isolation. The smaller lake offers warmer epilimnetic conditions for at least part of the summer, which may explain the much greater limnetic algal production in Lake Hunazoko.  相似文献

The physical and chemical characteristics of bauxite residue sand (BRS) affect the availability of a number of nutrients to plants, especially manganese (Mn). Lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) has been chosen as a BRS revegetation species because of its deep-rooting habit and tendency to tolerate moderately alkaline and saline soils, even though it is still prone to Mn deficiency stress. Sixteen commercially available lucerne genotypes were grown in BRS after addition of 5, 50 or 500 g Mn g–1 BRS in a glasshouse. Manganese deficiency and toxicity symptoms were observed in 5 and 500 g g–1 treatments, respectively. Symptom expression varied in severity between genotypes. Relative tolerance to Mn deficiency was defined by shoot dry weight at 5 g Mn g–1 as a percentage of shoot dry weight at 50 g Mn g–1. Salado, a genotype tolerant to Mn deficiency, and Sirosal, a genotype intolerant to Mn deficiency, were then grown with 0, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 or 800 g Mn g–1 BRS and found to have critical shoot Mn concentrations of 17.7 (Salado) and 26.6 g g–1 (Sirosal). The use of genotypes with high relative Mn deficiency tolerance is recommended to help improve sustainability of BRS revegetation as well as to improve productivity on Mn-fixing agricultural soils.  相似文献

Summary We assessed the feeding biology of veliger larvae of the introduced zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha Pallas) in laboratory experiments using inert microspheres as food analogues. Mean clearance rate on 2.87-m beads ranged between 247 and 420 L veliger–1 day–1. Clearance rate was unrelated to bead concentration up to 100 beads L–1, but was positively correlated with veliger shell length. Clearance rates of Dreissena veligers are within the range of those reported for marine bivalve veligers of similar size and for herbivorous Great Lakes microzooplankton, but are orders of magnitude lower than those of settled, conspecific adults. The impact of settled zebra mussel grazing activities on phytoplankton stocks may be up to 1162 times greater than that exerted by veliger populations in western Lake Erie. Based on 1990 size-frequency distributions and associated literature-derived clearance rates, reef-associated Dreissena populations in western Lake Erie (mean depth 7 m) possess a tremendous potential to filter the water column (up to 132 m3 m–2 day–1) and redirect energy from pelagic to benthic foodwebs. Preliminary analyses indicate that chlorophyll a concentration is strongly depleted (<1 g L–1) above Dreissena beds in western Lake Erie.  相似文献

Summary The objectives of the 3 year study were to determine the relationship between bacterial numbers and phytoplankton standing crops (chlorophyll a) in sub-antarctic Marion Island lakes (33) and to determine the relative importance of labile dissolved organic carbon and water temperature as regulators of heterotrophic bacterial activity and production. Bacterial activity (the incorporation and respiration rates of 14C-labelled substrates) and production (the rate of [methyl-3H]thymidine incorporation into DNA) were measured in oligotrophic Lava Lake and Gentoo Lake, an elephant seal wallow. Samples were incubated under ambient conditions as well as at increased temperature and with additions of labile dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Bacterial numbers ranged from 2.13 × 105 cell ml–1 to 15.17 × 106 cells ml–1 in the lake survey. The chlorophyll range was 0.18 to >75 g 1–1. Bacterial numbers were not correlated to chlorophyll concentration in waters where the chlorophyll content was 5 g 1–1 but were correlated in waters with larger algal contents. Heterotrophic bacterial activity and production, which were similar to rates recorded for equivalent lower latitude systems, were higher in Gentoo Lake than in Lava Lake. As a result of qualitative and quantitative differences in the DOC pools, DOC was the stronger regulator of bacterial activity and production in Lava Lake, while temperature was the stronger factor in Gentoo Lake.  相似文献

A well-defined nitrogen retention and turnover budget was estimated for a shallow oligohaline lake (Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, USA). In 1997 a month-long diversion of the Mississippi River filled the Lake with highly concentrated river water (80µM nitrate) and lowered the salinity to 0psu within 2 weeks. After the spillway was closed the Lake mixed with estuarine tidal waters and came to equilibrium over 4 months with the riverine, atmospheric and offshore water nitrogen sources. A flushing rate of 1.78% d–1 was estimated by analyzing a plot of ln salinity versus time for the first 120 days after the diversion ceased. This flushing rate was similar to the loss rate for total nitrogen (1.75% d–1), implying no significant net nitrogen losses or gains were occurring inside the Lake. The percent loss of dissolved inorganic nitrogen was higher than that for TN (4.11% d–1), whereas the loss of organic nitrogen was lower (0.94% d–1), which suggests a net transfer from inorganic to organic nitrogen. These changes occurred steadily as chlorophyll a concentration ranged from 5 to 200µg l–1. The results demonstrate the potential significance of the organic nitrogen and interconversion of nitrogen forms when calculating estuarine nitrogen retention budgets and the necessity of measuring all nitrogen forms when performing mass balance estimates. The significance of denitrification in nitrogen removal is minimal at the high loading rates observed during this study. An implication to estuarine water quality management is that the relationships between nitrogen loading and retention are not linear and are controlled by factors other than water residence time.  相似文献

In situ growth of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) in Lake Donghu, a eutrophic shallow lake in mainland China, was studied from January 1999 to March 2000 using a modified Weisse protocol. The study results indicated that the growth rates of HNF showed pronounced seasonal variation (–0.37–1.25 d–1), reaching the maximum during spring to early summer. When the water temperature was higher than 25.5°C, HNF growth was inversely proportional to water temperature. There was an effect by bacterial abundance and autotrophic picoplankton on HNF growth that depended on location. HNF biomass was the highest in late spring, and the HNF production ranged from –2.25 to 35.45 mg l–1 d–1 with mean of 3.17 mg l–1d–1. When considered in the context of biomass and production data for zooplankton in Lake Donghu, it was evident that HNF contributed significantly to the total zooplankton production in Lake Donghu. These in situ studies indicate that temperature and food supply are the major determinants of HNF abundance and productivity.  相似文献

Phosphorus and nitrogen excretion rates by zooplankton communities from two eutrophic and shallow Dutch lakes were measured in laboratory. The variations in excretion rates in the lakes (May–October) were caused mainly by fluctuation in zooplankton biomass. Mean summer excretion rates (June–September) were 2.4 and 0.9 µg PO4P·1–1·d–1 in Lake Loosdercht and Lake Breukeleveen, respectively. This difference between the lakes was caused mainly by the lower zooplankton biomass in Lake Breukeleveen. The excretion of 2.4 µg PO4P·1–1·d compared with the calculated P-demand of phytoplankton of 8.0 µg PO4P·1–1·d–1 is substantial in the summer (June–September) and far more important than the external P-supply of 0.4 µg P·1–1·d–1 and sediment release of 0.5 µg P·1–1·d–1. Both temperature and composition of zooplankton affected the weight specific excretion rates of the zooplankton community. The weight specific community excretion rates of P and N increased with temperature (exponential model); 1–8 g PO4P·mg–1 zooplankton-C·d–1 and 5–42 µg NH3N·mg–1 zooplankton-C·d–1 (10°C–20°C).  相似文献

Surface water acidification is potentially a problem in regions with low ionic strength drainage waters. Atmospheric deposition of sulfuric acid has generally been implicated as the causative agent of this problem, although other sources of acidity may contribute. The Adirondack region of New York State is an area with acid-sensitive surface waters and an abundance of acidic lakes. The intent of this study was to evaluate the processes regulating the acid/base chemistry of a series of lakes draining a large heterogeneous watershed in the Adirondack region of New York. The study site, the North Branch of the Moose River, is heterogeneous in its soil and geological characteristics. This variability was reflected through differences in water chemistry that occurred within the basin. The northern headwaters generally drain subcatchments with shallow, acidic soils. The resulting water chemistry was acidic (equivalence of acidic anions exceeded equivalence of basic cations) with high concentrations of Al and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). As this water migrated through a large lake (Big Moose Lake) with a moderate hydrologic retention time (0.5 yr), considerable loss of DOC was evident. As acidic water was transported through the drainage area, it mixed with waters that were enriched in concentrations of basic cations from the eastern subbasins. As a result, there was a successive increase in the acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) and a decrease in Al concentrations as water migrated from the northern reaches to the outlet of the watershed. In addition to these general trends, short-term changes in water chemistry were evident. During low flow summer periods concentrations of basic cations were elevated, while concentrations of SO 4 2– and NO 3 were relatively low. These conditions resulted in less acidic waters (higher ANC) with relatively low concentrations of Al. During high flow winter/spring conditions, elevated concentrations of SO 4 2– and NO 3 were evident, while concentrations of basic cations were reduced resulting in low pH (low ANC) waters with high concentrations of Al.Variability in the processes regulating the pH buffering of waters was apparent through these short-term changes in water chemistry. In the northern subbasin short-term fluctuations in ANC were minimal because of the buffering of Al under low pH conditions. Seasonal changes in the ANC were more pronounced in the eastern subbasin because of the predominance of inorganic carbon buffering in the circumneutral pH waters.Lakes in the west-central Adirondacks have characteristically short hydraulic residence times and elevated nitric acid inputs. As a result these waters may be more susceptible to surface water acidification than other acid-sensitive lake districts in eastern North America. Given the apparent interregional differences, extrapolation of chemical trends in the Adirondacks to other areas may be tenuous.  相似文献

Two samples of red soil, one from Gushikawa Recreation Center (GRC) and one from Okinawa Royal Golf Club (ORGC), were examined for particle size distribution, textures, minerals, and chemical compositions. The effects of particle size and grinding of clay minerals on pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and dissolved chemical species were studied in deionized water and river water. The results of red soil solutions were compared with those of acidic waters found in red soil dominated areas. The minimum pH values of soil solutions extracted by deionized water were 4.38–5.36 and 5.16–5.89 and the maximum values of EC were 4.91–16.98mSm–1 and 3.54–11.23mSm–1 for GRC and ORGC, respectively. In the river water samples equilibrated with red soils, the minimum pH values were 4.48–5.10 and 4.77–5.91 and the maximum EC values were 19.6–34.2mSm–1 and 17.5–25.0mSm–1 for GRC and ORGC, respectively. The values of pH and EC varied with the soil–solution ratio and the particle size. The chemical composition of river water without mixing with red soil shows Na+K+ and Ca2+Mg2+. After mixing with red soil, the trend of the concentrations changed to Na+K+ and Mg2+Ca2+, which is the same as that of soil solutions in deionized water as well as that of acidic waters found in the red soil area. The pH of the acidic waters was 4.95–5.81 and EC was 7.76–30.0mSm–1. Laboratory experimental results agreed well with those found in the field in terms of trend of concentrations of the chemical species and pH. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that the low pH and trend of the concentrations of chemical species of the acidic waters found in the red soil dominated areas were the result of the interaction of natural water and red soil.  相似文献

Chemical models describing the precipitation of calcium carbonate, coprecipitation of inorganic phosphate, carbon dioxide and oxygen transfer through the air-water interface have been applied to results from a recirculating experimental stream. The transfer velocities for carbon dioxide and oxygen transfer for the experimental stream were determined as 1.00 × 10–4 m s–1 and 0.0058 m min–1 (at 20°C) respectively. During a 24-hour long experiment the stream, containing a varied biota dominated by the macro-algae Zygnema, was monitored to evaluate changes in the water chemistry. The calcite precipitation rate varied during the experiment reflecting changes in temperature, supersaturation of the water and local variation in the solution chemistry at the growth sites. The rate constant was evaluated from a chemical mechanistic model as 516.7 ± 27.2 mol h–1 at 10 °C. The coprecipitation of inorganic phosphate, which accompanied calcite growth, accounted for < 6% of the total phosphorus loss. The constant uptake of phosphorus by plants and algae was estimated as 0.22 mol h–1 g–1 dry weight). The rates of production of oxygen and consumption of inorganic carbon in the experimental stream, after taking account of gas transfer and calcite precipitation, were also computed and found to be in good agreement during the experiment. The maximum rate of production of oxygen was 3.5 × 10–4 mol h–1 g–1 (dry weight).  相似文献

Concentration of dissolved free amino acids (DFAA) and assimilation of the 5 most abundant DFAA (glutamic acid, serine, glycine, alanine and ornithine) were measured at 3-h intervals over 27 h in two Danish, eutrophic lakes. The carbon flux of the amino acid assimilation was compared with the major routes of carbon flux, including primary production, bacterial production and zooplankton grazing. In Frederiksborg Slotssø, the mean DFAA concentration was 275 nM with distinct peaks (up to 783 nM) 3 h after sunrise. Assimilation rates of the 5 amino acids amounted on the average to 2.03 µg Cl–1 h–1, but high values up to 7.41 µg Cl–1 h–1 occurred 3 h after sunrise and at midnight. The mean turnover time of the amino acid pools was 3.2 h. In Lake Mossø, the mean DFAA concentration was 592 nM with peak of 1 161 nM at dusk. The assimilation rate averaged 0.44 µg Cl–1 h–1, and the mean turnover time of the amino acid pools was 39 h. In Lake Mossø, similar turnover times of glutamic acid and serine were determined from the 14C-amino acid tracer technique and Michaelis-Menten uptake kinetics, indicating that the tracer technique gave reliable values of the actual assimilation. The average respiration percentages of the assimilated amino acids were 45% in Frederiksborg Slotssø and 51% in Lake Mossø. Extracellular organic carbon (EOC) released from the phytoplankton contributed DFAA to the water. In Lake Mossø, 81% of the ambient EOC pool was <700 daltons and 9.3% of the EOC was DFAA. This corresponded to about 2.4% of the DFAA pool. Bacterial productivity, determined by means of frequency of dividing cells and 35S-SO4 dark uptake techniques gave similar results and constituted 4.5 and 3.7 µg Cl–1 h–1 in Frederiksborg Slotssø and Lake Mossø, respectively. The bacterial productivity suggested that DFAA were essential substrates to the bacteria, especially in Frederiksborg Slotssø. The zooplankton biomass in Frederiksborg Slotssø was six times larger than that in Lake Mossø, but cladocerans were dominant in both lakes. The zooplankton grazing probably was an important regulatory factor for the bacterial productivity.  相似文献

Seasonal cycle of the microbial plankton in Crooked Lake,Antarctica   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Summary Changes in the abundance of the components of the microbial plankton between July 1990 and March 1991 in Crooked Lake, one of the largest and deepest freshwater lakes in Antarctica, are described. Chlorophyll a concentration is low (0.2–0.4g·1–1) and there is no discernable spring increase. The phytoplankton is largely dominated by flagellates. Bacterioplankton exhibits a seasonal pattern of abundance ranging from 1.0 × 108·1–1 in July to 3.25 × 108·1–1 in September. Changes in bacterial abundance probably relate to temperature and grazing by heterotrophic and mixotrophic flagellates. Total flagellated protozoan concentrations ranged between 25–136 × 102·l–1. Autotrophic and heterotrophic flagellate abundances were coupled and peaks in their abundance oscillated with peaks in bacterioplankton concentration. Four species of ciliated protozoa, dominated by oligotrichs, particularly the plastidic Strombidium, inhabit the lake. The plankton is characterised by the presence of floes which act as loci for bacteria, flagellates and amoebae and feeding sites for the ciliates and the two sparce metazoan components of the plankton. Crooked Lake is extremely oligotrophic but nonetheless supports a plankton community with a low species diversity and simple trophodynamics.  相似文献

Monthly averages of standing stock wet biomass of zooplankton in Lake Kinneret (Israel) varied between 11 and 76 g m–2 during 1969–1981, with the exception of two months. Averaged contributions of different groups were: Cladocera 58%, Copepoda 35% and Rotifera 7%. Total standing crop wet biomass is highest during January–June, averages varied between 35 and 50 g m–2, and decreases during summer–fall (23–36 g m–2). The winter biomass of Cladocera fluctuated between 22 and 35 g m–2 and dropped to a range of 9–23 g m–2 in summer, whereas copepod biomass varied very little around an average of 18 g (ww) m–2 with the exception of low values from April to June. The stock biomass of Rotifera is relatively high during winter floods season (December-March) whilst in summer it is very low.Young stages of fish in Lake Kinneret feed mostly on zooplankton and zoobenthic forms. The most abundant fish in the Kinneret ecosystem, Mirogrex terraesanctae terraesanctae, also feed on zooplankton at the adult stage throughout the year, and herbivorous fish consume zooplankton during the summer when lake plankton resources are limited. The summer ecosystem of Lake Kinneret is characterised as a steady state type, in which the impact of the zooplankton-chain is of great importance. Increase of predation pressure on zooplankton by fish can disequilibrate the balanced trophic relations existing between nannoplankton production and zooplankton grazing capacity. Such a situation can lead to organics accumulation as nannoplankton blooms, resulting in water quality deterioration. Management options aimed at preventing collapse of zooplankton populations are discussed.  相似文献

Seed of narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) produced in Western Australia often has low manganese (Mn) concentration because of low Mn availability in the soil during grain filling. A major problem of lupin production is poor seedling establishment. We tested the hypothesis that low Mn concentration in lupin seeds decreases emergence. The experiment was a factorial design comparing emergence of lupins (cv. Gungurru) grown under glasshouse conditions from seed with 2 different internal Mn concentrations (7 or 35 mg Mn kg–1 DW) and with 2 external Mn fertiliser treatments (0 or 10 mg MnSO4.H2O kg–1 soil). There were no visible differences between the seeds. Emergence was monitored and plants were harvested 17 days after sowing.Emergence was approximately 60% in all pots sown with low Mn compared to 100% in pots sown with high Mn seed. Application of Mn did not increase the final emergence of low Mn seed. Seed viability was assessed by staining with tetrazolium chloride, a common test used in seed testing laboratories. All high Mn seed were viable while 34% of low Mn seed were completely or partly unstained and therefore were non-viable. We have shown that low Mn supply during seed filling may lead to production of non-viable seed that cannot be visually distinguished from viable seed..  相似文献

During the fall of 1989 7.7Mg/ha of calcium carbonate was applied on two tributary catchments (40 ha and 60 ha) to Woods Lake, a small (25 ha) acidic headwater lake in the western Adirondack region of New York. Stream-water chemistry in both catchment tributaries responded immediately. Acid-neutralizing capacity (ANC) increased by more than 200 eq/L in one of the streams and more than 1000 eq/L in the other, from pre-liming values which ranged from –25 to +40 eq/L. The increase in ANC was primarily due to increases in dissolved Ca2+ concentrations. Most of the initial response of the streams was due to the dissolution of calcite that fell directly into the stream channels and adjacent wetlands. A small beaver impoundment and associated wetlands were probably responsible for the greater response observed in one of the streams. After the liming of subcatchmentIV (60 ha), Ca2+ concentrations increased with increasing stream discharge in the stream during fall rain events, suggesting a contribution from calcite dissolved within the soil and transported to the stream by surface runoff or shallow interflow. Concentrations of other ions not associated with the calcite (e.g. Na+) decreased during fall rain events, presumably due to mixing of solute-rich base flow with more dilute shallow interflow. The strong relation between changes in Ca2+ and changes in NO 3 concentrations during spring snowmelt, (r2 = 0.93, slope = 0.96, on an equivalent basis) suggests that both solutes had a common source in the organic horizon of the soil. Increases in NO 3 concentrations during snowmelt were balanced by increases in Ca2+ that was released either directly from the calcite or from exchange sites, mitigating episodic acidification of the stream. However, high ambient NO 3 concentrations and relatively low ambient Ca2+ concentrations in the stream during the spring caused the stream to become acidic despite the CaCO3 treatment. In stream WO2 (40ha), Ca2+ concentrations were much higher than in stream WO4 because of the dissolution of calcite which fell directly into the upstream beaver pond and its associated wetlands. Calcium concentrations decreased as both NO 3 concentrations and stream discharge increased, due to the dilution of Ca-enriched beaver pond water by shallow interflow. Despite this dilution, Ca2+ concentrations were high enough to more than balance strong acid anion (SO 4 , NO 3 , Cl) concentrations, resulting in a positive ANC in this stream throughout the year. These data indicate that liming of wetlands and beaver ponds is more effective than whole catchment liming in neutralizing acidic surface waters.  相似文献
