The species Daday (1898) describes as Alona globulosa has been critically studied, based on many populations from tropical and subtropical regions of the world, over its whole geographical range. A new species and a new subspecies are described. Based on the morphological characters of this species group, which are markedly different from those of the genera previously used for this species, namely Alona, Alonella, and Indialona, a new genus Notoalona is established. N. globulosa (Daday, 1898) is designated as the type species. Morphological differences of Notoalona, Alona, Alonella, and Indialona are discussed. The diagnostic characters of the genus Notoalona include 1) two bean-like thickenings as headpores on the headshield, 2) a row of submarginal setae along the posterior half of the ventral margin of carapace, 3) first trunk limb ODL with one seta and IDL with 3 setae and a small seta-like notch, 4) small branched seta dorsal to posterior lobe of trunk limb-I, 5) entire carapace of the ephippial female modified as an ephippium with a foamy mass surrounding the egg. N. globulosa has a wide distribution in Asia, Africa, and Australia. The Australian material has been designated as the subspecies australiensis. N. freyi sp. nov. is known only from Florida, USA. More detailed studies are necessary to evaluate the taxonomic status of other populations from America including material described as Alonella sculpta, which certainly belongs to the genus Notoalona.  相似文献

In our study, we focused on littoral Cladocera living and feeding in shallow shore parts of 46 mountain lakes in the Tatra Mountains (Slovakia and Poland). The studied lakes underwent a major acidification event in the 1980s and are now in the process of recovery. Lakes were divided into three categories based on their sensitivity to acidification: 5 extremely sensitive (ES), 11 acid sensitive (AS), and 30 non-sensitive (NS) lakes. In our study, we included historical data from the literature, and data from sediment core and littoral samples, which together represent the evolution of the littoral communities from a pre-industrial period up to the present. In total, 11 littoral species were found belonging to three cladoceran families. Most of the species were members of the family Chydoridae: Alona affinis, A. quadrangularis, A. rectangula, A. guttata, Acroperus harpae, Alonella excisa, A. nana, Chydorus sphaericus, and Eurycercus lamellatus. One species belonged to each family Daphniidae (Ceriodaphnia quadrangula) and Polyphemidae (Polyphemus pediculus). The most numerous littoral taxa were Alona affinis, Acroperus harpae, and Chydorus sphaericus. All species reacted to decreased pH levels during peak acidification in the 1980s by disappearing from most of the lakes of all categories; the only persisting species was Chydorus sphaericus. Most species returned to the lakes when pH started to increase in the 1990s, although their return was noticeably slower in AS lakes. Alona quadrangularis decreased its distribution range over the studied period; Polyphemus pediculus was mostly detected in the 1910s only. The number of species was highest in all lake categories when dwarf pine was present in the lake catchment. On the whole, the littoral community was richest in NS lakes.  相似文献

Morphological study of Alona protzi Hartwig, 1900, Alona phreatica Dumont, 1983 and Alona smirnovi Petkovski &; Flößner, 1972 reveals close affinities with Alona labrosa Vasiljeva &; Smirnov, 1969. We separate these four species from the polyphyletic Alona Baird, 1843 (Anomopoda: Chydoridae). United under Phreatalona gen. nov., these taxa share primitive features on the limbs, together with specializations to a rheic life mode. Phreatalona contains some of the only true hyporheic taxa within the Cladocera. Endemism in two ancient lakes (P. smirnovi and P. labrosa) and a preference for river sediments in Europe (P. phreatica and P. protzi) suggest a long isolation from typical littoral/benthic biotopes. We discuss close links with southern vicariant Nicsmirnovius, the position of these (hypo)rheic chydorids within the subfamily and their affinities with Acroperus. We remark an independent evolution of external (habitus, postabdomen) vs. internal (limb) morphology in the protzi-complex. Phreatalona is likely tertiary in origin, evolving from a littoral alonine adapting to rheic and finally hyporheic environments. Baikal endemic P. labrosa is likely the most primitive species of the genus. We discuss adaptations and evolution in the hyporheic and the effect on dispersal and biogeography of Phreatalona.  相似文献

Investigation of Sars' type material reveals that South American Alona iheringi Sars, 1901 (Chydoridae, Anomopoda, Branchiopoda) is a good species, not a synonym of A. rustica Scott, 1895 as was presumed before. A. iheringi is redescribed from the type material. It shows characteristic features of the costata-group, such as transverse lateral head pores and a peculiar shape of the male postabdomen. It is closely related to A. rustica, but differs from it by the morphology of the main head pores, of the III–V trunk limbs, and of the valves.  相似文献

Benthic Cladocera were monitored at five sites in Lake Myvatn, Iceland, over a decade (1990–1999), as part of a programme documenting the population fluctuations of animals at different trophic levels in the lake. The species composition remained relatively stable over the first seven years, but in 1997 the population of Eurycercus lamellatus was greatly reduced at all sites. The following year saw a mass occurrence of Alona rectangula and Alonella nana that were previously abundant only locally and rare at most sites. Alona affinis, A. quadrangularis, Acroperus harpae and Chydorus sphaericus were not affected. In 1999 the Cladocera assemblages returned to the pre-1997 situation. The shift was from large-bodied epibenthic and planktonic species (Eurycercus, Daphnia) to small infaunal (Alona rectangula) and ubiquitous (Alonella nana) species. Medium sized (Alona, Acroperus) and some small cladocerans (Chydorus) were not affected. The course of events was reminiscent of a trophic cascade caused by a change in size-selective predation pressure. If so, the impact of a predatory fish population (three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus) depended on whether cyclic chironomid populations were in a high or a low phase. The change in the Cladocera coincided with profound changes in the sediment characteristics associated with low chironomid abundance. We suggest that the relative competitive ability of the Cladocera species is reversed when the sediment has become homogeneous and nutrient-poor after overexploitation by the dominant, tube building and detritivorous chironomid Tanytarsus gracilentus.  相似文献

This study identified two scales of pattern in the assemblages of Chydoridae (Crustacea, Branchiopoda, Anomopoda) in the shallow (<2 m) littoral zone of Plastic Lake, Ontario, Canada in the autumn of 1987. Twenty chydorid species were collected in 15 over-night sets of funnel traps in each of four habitat types. Analysis of variance multivariate analysis of variance, and discriminant function analysis revealed that assemblages differed among the habitats. Alona intermedia, Alona quadrangularis and Chydorus bicornutus were particularly abundant in the most structurally diverse habitat type – muddy, rock-strewn areas with approximately 40% bottom cover by the pipewort, Eriocaulon septangulare. In contrast, Anchistropus cf. minor was caught most often on bare shelves of rock. A second set of analyses demonstrated that chydorid assemblages also differed at a smaller scale, i.e. with local patchiness in bottom cover by the dominant macrophyte (E. septangulare). The abundance of Alona affinis was positively correlated with cover by E. septangulare, whereas Anchistropus cf. minor was caught mainly in microhabitats without vegetation. Alona intermedia and A. quadrangularis were most abundant in microhabitats with intermediate amounts of vegetation, suggesting their abundance is influenced by habitat factors other than vegetation.  相似文献

The species group of Alona karua is raised to generic rank and named Karualona. The genus is defined on the basis of a number of characters of the body and its appendages. Tentative new microcharacters are introduced, related to the type and length of selected setae of P1, P2, P3 and P4. Two new species are described, one from the island of Socotra and one from Mexico. A key to the five currently recognized species is given.  相似文献

The groundwater along the Couze (= river) Pavin in Auvergne, France, yielded four chydorid Cladocera, among which two are known but rare species, while two are new species. One of the new species, Alona phreatica, has reduced eye and ocellus-sizes, but no other adaptations to a groundwater-mode of life are apparent. The likelihood that more phreatic species exist in other parts of Europe and elsewhere is discussed.  相似文献

The freshwater invertebrate fauna (excluding the Protozoa) of Macquarie Island is collated. This includes two Platyhelminthes, two Gastrotricha, three Tardigrada, 41 rotifera, at least eight Nematoda, nine Annelida, and 21 Arthropoda. The latter comprises six species of Anomopoda, two Copepoda, two Ostracoda, an Isopoda, five Acarina, and at least five species of Insecta with aquatic or semi-aquatic larvae. The freshwater Anomopoda (Cladocera) of Macquarie Island are re-evaluated, six species are now recognized and the largest, identified as Daphnia gelida (Brady), is redescribed. The records of both Alona weinecki Studer and Pleuroxus macquariensis Frey are confirmed, while that of Macrothrix hirsuticornis Norman and Brady is accepted with some reservations. Alona quadrangularis (O.F. Müller) is re-instated and records of Chydorus sphaericus O.F. Müller ascribed to C. patagonicus Ekman.  相似文献

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), a subgroup of the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β family, transduce their signal through multiple components downstream of their receptors. Even though the components involved in the BMP signaling pathway have been intensely studied, many molecules mediating BMP signaling remain to be addressed. To identify novel components that participate in BMP signaling, RNA interference (RNAi)-based screening was established by detecting phosphorylated Mad (pMad) in Drosophila S2 cells. Ter94, a member of the family of AAA ATPases, was identified as a novel mediator of BMP signaling, which is required for the phosphorylation of Mad in Drosophila S2 cells. Moreover, the mammalian orthlog of Ter94 valosin-containing protein (VCP) plays a critical role in the BMP-Smad1/5/8 signaling pathway in mammalian cells. Genetic evidence suggests that Ter94 is involved in the dorsal-ventral patterning of the Drosophila early embryo through regulating decapentaplegic (Dpp)/BMP signals. Taken together, our data suggest that Ter94/VCP appears to be an evolutionarily conserved component that regulates BMP-Smad1/5/8 signaling.  相似文献

The replication terminus region (Ter) of the unique chromosome of most bacteria locates at mid-cell at the time of cell division. In several species, this localization participates in the necessary coordination between chromosome segregation and cell division, notably for the selection of the division site, the licensing of the division machinery assembly and the correct alignment of chromosome dimer resolution sites. The genome of Vibrio cholerae, the agent of the deadly human disease cholera, is divided into two chromosomes, chrI and chrII. Previous fluorescent microscopy observations suggested that although the Ter regions of chrI and chrII replicate at the same time, chrII sister termini separated before cell division whereas chrI sister termini were maintained together at mid-cell, which raised questions on the management of the two chromosomes during cell division. Here, we simultaneously visualized the location of the dimer resolution locus of each of the two chromosomes. Our results confirm the late and early separation of chrI and chrII Ter sisters, respectively. They further suggest that the MatP/matS macrodomain organization system specifically delays chrI Ter sister separation. However, TerI loci remain in the vicinity of the cell centre in the absence of MatP and a genetic assay specifically designed to monitor the relative frequency of sister chromatid contacts during constriction suggest that they keep colliding together until the very end of cell division. In contrast, we found that even though it is not able to impede the separation of chrII Ter sisters before septation, the MatP/matS macrodomain organization system restricts their movement within the cell and permits their frequent interaction during septum constriction.  相似文献

The timely characterization of high-altitude freshwater habitats allows an assessment of the diversity of its biota and provides the basis for monitoring community change. In this study, we investigate the Cladocera fauna of 29 water bodies (pools, freshwater lakes, and surrounding swamps sampled at various occasions between 2005 and 2009) in the Rwenzori Mountains (Uganda, D. R. Congo), which are part of the East African Sky Island Complex. All sites except one are located above 3700 m altitude. We include notes on the morphology, taxonomy, distribution, and ecology of each recorded taxon and describe a new species of the Alona rustica-group (Alona sphagnophila n.sp.; Chydoridae). We found 11 species of which seven are restricted to Lake Mahoma, the lowest lake in our study area (2990 m) (Alona affinis barbata, A. intermedia, Alonella exisa, Alonella nana, Daphnia cf. obtusa, Pleuroxus aduncus) and/or Lake Bujuku (Daphnia cf. curvirostris, P. aduncus) (3900 m). Two taxa (Ilyocryptus cf. gouldeni, A. sphagnophila n.sp.) are restricted to Carex/Sphagnum bogs surrounding lakes in the afroalpine zone. Pigmented populations of Chydorus cf. sphaericus occur in all the sites. It is the only cladoceran species surviving the extreme alpine and nival conditions in the Rwenzori. The species is joined by A. guttata at locations at lower altitudes (ca. 3000–4000 m), present in about half of the sites. The Rwenzori Cladocera fauna is characterized by a strong extratropical temperate component and a low level of speciation/endemism. Harboring an impoverished boreal cladoceran community, Lake Mahoma is given closer attention. At 2990 m, the lake is a cold-temperate aquatic island in the tropics and may function as a stepping stone for Palaearctic taxa. We introduce a new term for high-altitude, cold-water habitats in the tropics, which act as climatic islands for extratropical freshwater faunas, Löffler Islands, in honor of Dr Heinz Löffler. In comparison to surveys in 1961, we list five new records in Lake Mahoma, which could indicate cladoceran community changes over the past few decades at ca. 3000 m in the Rwenzori. Since the species distributions correlate to temperature and catchment properties of the lakes, the Rwenzori cladoceran fauna can be expected as sensitive indicators for local changes.  相似文献

We analyzed a lacustrine sediment core covering the Holocene from Lake Einstaken, Nordaustlandet, for its fossil Cladocera (Crustacea) with an aim to reconstruct past aquatic communities in this environmentally extreme and unexplored region. In the analysis, we encountered remains (carapaces, ephippia, headshields, and postabdomens) of an unknown chydorid (Chydoridae, Aloninae) species during two separate periods in the early Holocene. The remains had some comparable morphological characters with the European Alona guttata s.str. Sars, 1862 and with the glacial relict Alona werestschagini Sinev, 1999, but they differed clearly from the previous species; the headshield had broadly rounded rostrum and narrow fornices, the ephippium was heavily pigmented and reticulated, and the postabdomen had convex dorsal and ventral margins. The postabdomen had evidently similar morphology with Alona bergi R?en, 1992, which has been described, although inadequately, from arctic Canada and northern Greenland. We conclude, based on the morphology of the postabdomen, that the unknown remains belong to species closely resembling A. bergi, named here Alona cf. bergi, and assume that the species, whether the true A. bergi or some other cryptic species of the A. guttata group, is a postglacial relict of the high arctic adapted to cold climate. Herewith, we emphasize the need for extensive biogeographical investigations into both fossil and intact specimens of chydorids in the arctic.  相似文献

Cladoceran assemblages were studied in littoral samples from 44 water bodies in Central Spain, showing great differences in salinity and permanence of water. Principal component analyses (PCA) were performed with data on cladoceran relative abundances to identify the main groups of species. Five main groups of species were found, defining the following types of environments: (I) Small but deep hard water lakes (II) permanent but shallow hard water lakes fed by surface springs, rich in macrophytes (III) ephemeral and shallow soft waters lakes (IV) subsaline and hyposaline lakes in their lower range, specially the permanent ones and (V) saline lakes (salinities>6 mg l–1) subject to short or long periods of dryness. The main species constituting these groups were: Group (I): Acroperus neglectus, Alona guttata, Pleuroxus truncatus, Daphnia longispina; group II: Phrixura leei, Latonura rectirostris, Eurycercus lamellatus; Alonella excisa, Daphnia pulicaria; group III: Ephemeroporus phintonicus, Macrothrix rosea, Moina micrura; group IV: Alona rectangula, Ceriodaphnia reticulata, Tetrocephala ambigua, Diaphanosoma mongolianum; group V: Alona salina, Pleuroxus letourneuxi, Dunhevedia crassa, Moina brachiata, Daphnia magna and Daphnia mediterranea. Sample scores from PCA extracted from the correlation matrix of cladoceran proportions were correlated with limnological measurements. Significant correlations with salinity, alkalinity anions and cations indicate that salinity is an important factor in the distribution of the species. However, species assemblages also reflect other factors, such as temporality and littoral development.  相似文献

Samples collected in Central Amazonia contained 16 species of Chydoridae, 4 species of Macrothricidae and 1 species of Ilyocryptidae. A new chydorid,Celsinotum laticaudatum sp. nov. is described, clearly differing from Australian species of this genus. Variation ofAlona dentifera (Sars, 1901) is commented upon, as well as a peculiar specimen ofAlona.  相似文献

The small (116 amino acids) inner membrane protein MerT encoded by the transposon Tn501 has been overexpressed under the control of the bacteriophage T7 expression system. Random mutants of MerT were made and screened for loss of mercuric ion hypersensitivity. Several mutantmerT genes were selected and sequenced: Cys24Arg and Cys25Tyr mutations abolish mercury resistance, as do charge-substitution mutations in the first predicted transmembrane helix (Glyl4Arg, Glyl5Arg, Gly27Arg, Ala18Asp), and the termination mutations Trp66Ter and Cys82Ter.  相似文献

A homozygous nonsense mutation (Ter) in murine Dnd1 (Dnd1Ter/Ter) results in a significant early loss of primordial germ cells (PGCs) prior to colonization of the gonad in both sexes and all genetic backgrounds tested. The same mutation also leads to testicular teratomas only on the 129Sv/J background. Male mutants on other genetic backgrounds ultimately lose all PGCs with no incidence of teratoma formation. It is not clear how these PGCs are lost or what factors directly control the strain-specific phenotype variation. To determine the mechanism underlying early PGC loss we crossed Dnd1Ter/Ter embryos to a Bax-null background and found that germ cells were partially rescued. Surprisingly, on a mixed genetic background, rescued male germ cells also generated fully developed teratomas at a high rate. Double-mutant females on a mixed background did not develop teratomas, but were fertile and produced viable off-spring. However, when Dnd1Ter/Ter XX germ cells developed in a testicular environment they gave rise to the same neoplastic clusters as mutant XY germ cells in a testis. We conclude that BAX-mediated apoptosis plays a role in early germ cell loss and protects from testicular teratoma formation on a mixed genetic background.  相似文献

Relatively little is known about the interaction of eukaryotic replication terminator proteins with the cognate termini and the replication termination mechanism. Here, we report a biochemical analysis of the interaction of the Reb1 terminator protein of Schizosaccharomyces pombe, which binds to the Ter3 site present in the nontranscribed spacers of ribosomal DNA, located in chromosome III. We show that Reb1 is a dimeric protein and that the N-terminal dimerization domain of the protein is dispensable for replication termination. Unlike its mammalian counterpart Ttf1, Reb1 did not need an accessory protein to bind to Ter3. The two myb/SANT domains and an adjacent, N-terminal 154-amino-acid-long segment (called the myb-associated domain) were both necessary and sufficient for optimal DNA binding in vitro and fork arrest in vivo. The protein and its binding site Ter3 were unable to arrest forks initiated in vivo from ars of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in the cell milieu of the latter despite the facts that the protein retained the proper affinity of binding, was located in vivo at the Ter site, and apparently was not displaced by the “sweepase” Rrm3. These observations suggest that replication fork arrest is not an intrinsic property of the Reb1-Ter3 complex.  相似文献

This study explores changes in cladoceran composition in a high mountain lake of the Retezat (Lake Brazi), the South Carpathian Mountains of Romania, during the Late Glacial–Early Holocene (14,500–11,600 cal. yr. bp) transition using a paleolimnological approach. The lake had a species poor cladoceran community throughout this period. Daphnia longispina, Chydorus sphaericus and Alona affinis were the most common, showing marked fluctuations in their relative abundances through time. Distinct faunal response to warming at the Younger Dryas (YD)/Preboreal transition was recorded by increasing fossil densities and distinct community composition change: Alona affinis became dominant while numbers of Chydorus sphaericus dramatically decreased. In the Early Holocene, the productivity of Lake Brazi seem to have increased as reflected by higher numbers of Cladocera due to appearance of new species (Alona rectangula, A. quadrangularis and A. guttata) which are common in productive waters. Significant negative correlation was found between average dorsal length of daphnid ephippia and the NGRIP δ18O isotope values. Given the absence of fish predation, changes in Daphnia ephippia size were taken to indicate climatic change: larger ephippium size inferred cold conditions during the Late Glacial, while smaller size reflected climate warming during the Early Holocene. We conclude that Cladocera fossils are good indicators of climatic change that happened during the transition from the Late Glacial to the Holocene. We found that climatic conditions can be tracked either by size distribution of Daphnia ephippia (larger ephippium size under colder climate) and/or by community change of cladocerans.  相似文献
