A new name and new combinations in Campomanesia and Pimenta (Myrtaceae)

One new name is proposed and eleven new combinations are made inCampomanesia andPimenta. Lectotypes are selected forC. eugenioides var.desertorum, C. phaea, andP. racemosa var.hispaniolensis, var.ouza, and var.terebinthina.     

New genera and species of ericaceae (Vaccinieae) from Costa Rica and Panama

Two new monotypic genera,Didonica andUtleya, are described, withD. pendula from Panama andU. costaricensis from Costa Rica.Disterigma trimera (Panama),D. utleyorum (Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador),Lateropora santafeensis (Panama),Lysiclesia panamensis (Panama),Macleania talamancensis (Costa Rica),Themistoclesia costaricensis (Costa Rica) andT. horquetensis (Panama),Vaccinium costaricense andV. orosiense (both from Costa Rica) and V.jefense (Panama) are all described as new. New combinations are provided for the PanamanianVaccinium floccosum (=Symphysia floccosa) and the West IndianVaccinium racemosum (=Symphysia racemosa). Keys are provided for the Central American species ofDisterigma andThemistoclesia, the species ofLateropora andLysiclesia, and the Costa Rican and Panamanian species ofVaccinium. Six new species are illustrated.     

New varietal combinations in Agave vivipara (Agavaceae)

New varietal combinations are made inAgave vivipara forA. deweyana, A. letonae, A. nivea, A. rubescens andA. angustifolia var.sargentii. A. angustifolia var.marginata andA. angustifolia var.variegata are transferred toA. vivipara as cultivars.     

New taxa in Pectis (Compositae: Pectidinae) from Mexico and the southwestern United States

Pectis minutiflora,P. papposa var.grandis, andP. purpurea var.sonorae are described as new. A new combination,P. purpurea var.lancifolia also is included. Chromosome counts (n = 12) are reported forP. papposa var.grandis andP. purpurea var.sonorae.     

A taximetric study of infraspecific variation in autogamous Limnanthes floccosa (Limnanthaceae)

Limnanthes floccosa Howell is a variable autogamous species of recent origin. The phenetic relationships of a large number of populations ofL. floccosa were studied using taximetric techniques. Five subspecies are recognized inL. floccosa on the basis of the taximetric results.Limnanthes floccosa ssp.californica andL. floccosa ssp.grandiflora are described as new, andL. floccosa ssp.pumila andL. floccosa ssp.bellingeriana are proposed as new combinations. Aspects of autogamy responsible for the highly discrete pattern of variation inL. floccosa are discussed.     

The genera Amblostoma,Lanium, and Stenoglossum (Orchidaceae)

The generaAmblostoma, Lanium, andStenoglossum are discussed, and it is concluded that all three should be included inEpidendrum.Lanium is treated as a section, and new names are proposed for two species whose epithets are preoccupied inEpidendrum: E. macrum (forAmblostoma gracile) andE. stiliferum (forLanium subulatum).     

New species of grasses in Arberella,Cryptochloa, and Raddia (Poaceae: Bambusoideae: Olyreae)

Two new species are described inArberella, one from Panama (Arberella lancifolia) and one from Bahia, Brazil (a. bahiensis), the latter representing a considerable extension of the known range of the genus.Cryptochloa decumbens, described from Panama, brings to ten the species recognized in this genus andRaddia angustifolia, from Bahia, increases to five the number of species in that genus. Each new species is fully illustrated and keyed.     

New taxa and nomenclatural changes in arceuthobium (viscaceae)

New species of Pectis (Asteraceae) from the West Indies,Mexico, and South America

Four new species ofPectis are described:P. ericifolia from Barbuda,P. luckoviae from west-central Mexico,P. arida from Ecuador and Peru, andP. cajamarcana from Peru. Chromosome counts forP. ericifolia (n=48) andP. luckoviae (n=12) are presented. Relationships of the newly described taxa are discussed.     

New Rubiaceae from the Brazilian Planalto

Three new species from Brazil,Hindsia irwinii, Manettia irwinii, andMitracarpus pusillus, are described. A new section,Brevicalyx, is erected for Hindsia irwinii, and another new section,Irwinianthus, forManettia irwinii.     

New species and combinations in Odontonema (Acanthaceae)

Six new species ofOdontonema are described:Odontonema album, O. amicorum, O. breedlovei, O. laxum, O. mortonii andO. speciosum. In addition two new combinations are proposed forOdontonema,O. glaberrimum andO. nitidum var.album, and nine species are transferred fromOdontonema to other acanthaceous genera, namelyAnisacanthus ramosissimus, Buceragenia foliaceo-bracteata, Pseuderanthemum cuspidatum, P. hookerianum, P. interruptum, P. paniculatum, P. stenostachyum, Stenostephanus longistaminus andStreblacanthus dubiosus.     

A new subspecies and new combinations in Comarostaphylis (Ericaceae)

Comarostaphylis spinulosa subsp.glandulifera is described from the mountains of Oaxaca and Puebla, Mexico. Four new combinations inComarostaphylis are also made:C. arbutoides subsp.costaricensis, C. discolor subsp.rupestris, C. polifolia subsp.minor, andC. spinulosa.Arctostaphylos glabrata, A. rupestris, andA. spinulosa are lectotypified and the status ofC. polifolia is discussed.     

Three new Brazilian species of chamaecrista moench (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae)

Chamaecrista (sect.Apoucouita) aspidiifolia Irwin & Barneby from Bahia,Ch. (sect.Absus) glischrodes Irwin & Barneby from Minas Gerais andCh. (sect.Absus)didyma Irwin & Barneby from Brazilian Amazonia are described, figured, and discussed in terms of affinity. Several incidental new combinations inChamaecrista are proposed.     

Collected notes on Coccoloba L. (Polygonaceae)

New species ofCoccoloba are described from Mexico (Coccoloba ortizii), Honduras (Coccoloba cholutecensis), Panama (Coccoloba gentryi andC. johnstonii), Venezuela (Coccoloba yaracuyensis), and Brazil (Coccoloba bullata). Recent collections have permitted the re-examination of species from Central and South America.Coccoloba escuintlensis Lundell,C. floribunda (Bentham) Lindau, andC. williamsii Standley, which had been placed in synonymy, are now re-established. The following species have been placed in synonymy after the examination of additional collections:Coccoloba itzana Lundell,C. matudai Lundell,C. oligocarpa Lundell,C. petensis Lundell,C. tenuis Lundell,C. verapazensis Lundell,C. viridis Lundell,C. ecuadorensis Brandbyge,C. trollii Brandbyge andC. inaequilatera Rizzini.     

Two new species of Hechtia (Bromeliaceae,Pitcairnioideae) from western Mexico

Hechtia glauca andHechtia iltisii are described as new and illustrated. Among the Bromeliaceae H. glauca is unusual in its glabrous, glaucous leaf surfaces. Inflorescence and floral dimorphisms are discussed forH. glauca andH. iltisii. A key to species ofHechtia from Novo-Galiciana and adjacent parts of Michoacan is included.     

Arceuthobium (Viscaceae) in Mexico and Guatemala: Additions and range extensions

Three new dwarf mistletoes are described:Arceuthobium globosum subsp.grandicaule (Mexico and Guatemala),A. aureum subsp.aureum (Guatemala) andA. aureum subsp.petersonii (Chiapas, Mexico).Arceuthobium guatemalense is recorded for the first time in Mexico. Significant range extensions are recorded forA. abietisreligiosae, A. divaricatum,A. gillii subsp.nigrum, andA. rubrum. New hosts are reported for several taxa. Nineteen members of the genus are presently known from Mexico, and three (possibly four) from Guatemala. Chromosome counts are reported for the first time for 3 taxa.     

Stuessya (Asteraceae: Heliantheae), a new genus from southcentral Mexico

Stuessya, a new genus from the Pacific slopes of southcentral Mexico is described. It is comprised of three species:S. apiculata, previously assigned to the genusViguiera;S. perennans, the generotype; andS. michoacana. The latter two taxa are previously undescribed. The genus is characterized by its urceolate, sclerified (at maturity) involucre. Chromosome counts of2n = 34 are reported forS. perennans. Relationships are problematical, but are reckoned to be somewhere betweenAldama andViguiera.     

Four new species of Smilax (Smilacaceae) from southeastern Asia

Described as new areSmilax biumbellata of the affinity ofS. nervomarginata,S. siamensis of the affinity of 5.perfoliata, and two others inSmilax sect.Macranthae:S. inversa andS. pachysandroides.Smilax inversa (characterized by strongly deflexed leaves and inflorescences on zigzag stems) andS. pachysandroides (with subsessile leaves on low simple stems) show no close resemblance to any previously known species of the section.     

Two novel hydroperoxylated products of 20(S)-protopanaxadiol produced by Mucor racemosus and their cytotoxic activities against human prostate cancer cells

Microbial transformation of 20(S)-protopanaxadiol (1) by Mucor racemosus AS 3.205 yielded two novel hydroperoxylated metabolites and three known hydroxylated metabolites. The structures of the metabolites were identified as 26-hydroxyl-20(S)-protopanaxadiol (2), 23,24-en-25-hydroxyl-20(S)-protopanaxadiol (3), 25,26-en-24(R)-hydroperoxyl-20(S)-protopanaxadiol (4), 23,24-en-25-hydroperoxyl-20(S)-protopanaxadiol (5), and 25-hydroxyl-20(S)-protopanaxadiol (6). 4 and 5 are new compounds. Metabolites 2, 4, and 5 showed the more potent inhibitory effects against DU-145 and PC-3 cell lines than the substrate.     

A new series and three new species of Passiflora subgenus Astrophea from the Guianas

A new series,Passiflora ser.Carneae, and three new species are described inPassiflora subg.Astrophea:P. ascidia from Guyana and Venezuelan Guayana;P. balbis from Guyana, Venzuelan Guayana, and Amazonian Brazil; andP. saulensis from central French Guiana. A key to the 19 Guiana species ofPassiflora subg.Astrophea is provided.
